Well, basically, I'm looking at going interrailing on a global pass.

Can I use this pass to get to France where I want to start as the map says it is valid in the UK?

ie on the Eurostar?

It's only valid in the UK if you are not resident in the UK (or something like that!), it's in the 'small print' ;)

No problem. This country is terrible value in that respect. Our ALR is very overpriced compared to other countries.

I believe you can travel to the Czech Republic, do a FC ALR over there for a week, travel back, add your food & accommodation costs and spend less than a standard ALR here on our rubbish traction, and indeed have money to spare, while enjoying locos that sound like 37s on local/regional services!

A UK-issued ("Code 70") InterRail pass CAN be used to obtain discounts on Eurostar and certain ferries to the mainland, and those issued to under 26s can be used to obtain a 50% discount on National Rail services.

Cheers,

Are you sure about that? I thought the 50% discount in the UK had been discontinued - see here.

Regarding Eurostar the pass fares are not great - may well be better to buy a cheap advance ticket. Regarding the ferries - not much joy there either. Mainly 25% discount on ferries to/from Ireland, and 30% discount on Harwich-Hook of Holland. Nothing on cross-channel ferries.

Great :( Looks like the budget will have to either magically expand, or I do a shorter one :(

If you can get a cheap flight on a low-cost airline, it might be better to fly to an airport on the continent with or near a railway station and start your Inter-Rail there.

Well it's still shown in The Manual, and on Ticket Issuing Systems, so...

Just wondered because that website is usually accurate, and it used to be shown there (50% discount for Inter Rail -26).

Might have to, probably a morning flight from EMA -CDG and then head to Gare de Bercy for the sleeper..
