Starting Dec 2010. Apparently a XC SLC2 commitment, although this was also
mentioned in the GWML RUS earlier this year:

Six extra services to Southampton

06:33 BHM - RDG is extended to SOU, arriving 09:17
06:15 LDS - RDG is extended to SOU, arriving 11.17
07.23 NCL - RDG is extended to SOU, arriving 13.17
09.35 NCL - RDG is extended to SOU, arriving 15.17
11.27 NCL - RDG is extended to SOU, arriving 17.17
13.34 NCL - RDG is extended to SOU, arriving 19.53

Six extra up services, one of which starts Winchester, presumably as
an ECS move to Southampton Central cannot be pathed?

08.41 RDG - NCL starts back from WIN at 08.01
10.41 RDG - NCL starts back from SOU at 09.46
12.41 RDG - NCL starts back from SOU at 11.46
14.41 RDG - EDB starts back from SOU at 13.46
16.41 RDG - NCL starts back from SOU at 15.47
18.41 RDG - YRK starts back from SOU at 17.46

Just a rumour, but apparently, XC want all Reading trains to be extended to bournemouth, and all Leicester trains to be extended to SSD APT where possible :D

At the Leicester XC staff forum a while back the MD, Andy Cooper was asked about the extension of the Leicester trains and his reply was "...It appears to be a casualty of government budget cuts..."

Can't see it happening any time soon.

The GWML RUS explains that a 2 hourly pattern is all that's possible because of existing freight paths...

A notional timetable was used for an hourly
and two-hourly extension from Reading
to Southampton, assuming that the paths
north of Reading were fixed. Both options
were assessed against the December 2009
timetable to identify any conflicts with the
existing passenger and freight services. The
hourly option produced a large number of
conflicts with existing freight services and
empty coaching stock and in order to enable
all services to operate as now, a significant
amount of infrastructure would be required.
This option was therefore discounted due to
the business case being unable to support the
level of capital expenditure required.
The two-hourly option, providing an additional
six trains per day in each direction between
Reading and Southampton proved to be
operationally feasible on current infrastructure

Will this not need extra stock?

Services extended to Southampton, with a 30 minute turnaround time, adds 2.5 hours to each diagram.

My reaction too!

Good news, of course - it gives the south coast a link to civilisation (or "Yorkshire" as we like to call it)

WIth this and the plan to divert half the Donny services via Leeds instead, I'm wondering whether XC will need to use all HSTs each day (and no more double Voyagers)?

Only appears to need one extra unit to me which will no doubt be 'found' by squeezing the existing fleet harder.

I suppose since the current Newcastle services arrive in Reading at xx.08 and don't leave until xx.41 one additional unit would suffice (one hour down and one hour up, every two hours) - half hour wait at Reading becomes half hour wait at Southampton, if there's a spare platform for that length of wait

I gather December sees us back up to 4 HSTs in service each day.

Only if they have to, knowing XC they'll try and wait as long as they can before paying for bogie checks

I imagine that is why XC have recently recruited more train managers, first class hosts and train drivers for Bournemouth and Reading depots...

Do ECS runs still go to Poole on Sundays from Bournenmouth? It seems to have been forgotten generally that trains ran to Poole in service.

I lament the switching in the past and the loss of the service from Southampton to Carlisle and beyond...it was handy to get to Penrith North Lakes.

Yep was waiting for this to be announced, should provide some much need additional capacity.

If they send a HST or 2 down here with the extra capacity I might consider traveling with XC again instead of normally going via London apart from localish journeys BMH - OXF.

Shame there isn’t the paths for an hourly additional service, but this will still bring back direct journeys to places like NCL and SHF and be a big improvement.

Will plt 5 at SOU be brought back into use somehow to provide space for these XC moves?

It must have been when it was in regular use, wouldn't it?

I couldn't tell you if it still is or not, if only you asked me that 3 hours ago and I could of had a look.

No way will they use HSTs on those journeys, they will porbably be used on the Scotland - SW cascading voyagers :)

The other thing is I'm really can't see where there would be capacity here at WIN to turn around a unit, when we only have 2 platforms and 5 passenger + freight services an hour during the day/ evening, not that I know much about pathing and timetables. Any ideas?

Edit: more traversing LU on long distance journeys and loosing myself in a pub on the way home then. :(

It will arrive ECS, so say it left at 0700, it would probably arrive at 0654 or something, just time for the driver to walk down the train, set up the cab etc and then go (with passengers). If it arrived in service it would take longer :)

What I would realy like is an early train say 05:30 - 06:00 then I might be able to get the earlier ferry from HHD. :)

So I assume the lines through here are bi-directional then?

Micheldever-Shawford is bi-di, Shawford-eastleigh, the downs are bi-di, the ups are up only. There are XOvers at Winchester basingstoke end at the Baltoc Siding.

I don't think they would have to be bi-directional to allow that move, but yes I'm pretty sure they are :)

So how much infrastructure would be needed to extend the service to BMH or the full 2tph?

It would probably just be stock that is stopping them, but I don't know for sure

Edit: I justed looked at the TT and I it would catch up with the stopping service before Bournemouth I think
I was at Bournemouth on Tuesday, and I was suprised how busy the 1745 to Manchester was
