Well, chaps, its been a great 4 years. A refreshing four years from a bloke who cannot be purchased by the establishment.
It does appear now, however, that the establishment has won once again. The Banks. Tech. The Corporate Media. They win again.
Biden won because he's not Trump and not Bernie sanders. Bernie Sanders didn't win because he's not Jo Biden, and not part of the establishment.
Harris is VP solely because she's a woman and not white.
Identity politics lives on.

oh dear. In the kingdom of the blind the one eyed man is king

The margin wasn't big for a country with America's population. The Democrats should be concerned about the prospect of better Republican candidate standing against them in 2024. Marco Rubio would be very dangerous for instance. The right candidate could purge the Republican party of the most toxic elements of Trumps agenda but keep the nationalist element. The Democrats have won the opportunity of four years to sort themselves and workout how to broaden their support. Biden is a transitional figure who realistically isn't going to run in 2024. They need to work out what they transiting to. Hopefully Biden can work with Harris to have a clear platform for her to win nomination and then the presidency.

Seven million is what we're looking at, that's around 5%. A fair amount if you're being modest.

Here's the issue. As Romney has just said, conservatives in America aren't behind Medicare for all, Green New Deal etc. So why pander to that politics? Responsible Republicans as they like to call themselves are not much different from Trump bar the way that they go about their politics. So the Democrats need to play on this, they're focusing on the future of the American economy. That's how they win again.

Whatever my personal views, the election of an Irish-American POTUS is not good news for the UK. This is of particular consequence post Brexit in view of the EU's attitude to perfidious Albion, however pleasing it is to be able to send a P45 to the obnoxious P45.

I have read that some members of Biden's team really hate Boris Johnson, mostly because of what he said about Obama in the past and also his Trump support. Should make 2021 interesting.

Given lockdown, I suspect that Biden will be around a lot longer on the political stage than Boris anyway.

As far as I'm concerned anything that checks the more Trump-like behaviours of Bozo has got to be good for Britain.

Biden's top priority is to get measures in place to tackle the virus, which could include lockdown when necessary. Trump either ignored the issue or encouraged behavior that would spread it.

I found an interesting video which suggests most Americans are fed up of the destructive nature of lockdowns and this would have translated into more votes for Trump.

I will see if I can dig out the link and post it here shortly.

I personally would have done anything to vote Trump out however I would have found it extremely off-putting to vote for anyone who supports lockdowns. So I can absolutely see how the pandemic resulted in more votes for Trump.

Conversely I think the opposite would have been the case of the election was held (say) four months ago.

Our Prime Minister has spent half a century saying things about anybody and anything for the amusement of others and to increase his popularity, whether they be true or not, offensive or not. He is now finding that some of these are coming back to haunt him. It was only to be expected. He will try to laugh it off, he is already trying to cosy up to Biden's team (didn't Dominic Raab send high-ups to see the Biden team once it looked like Biden's lead was holding up, Trump must have loved that). Fortunately, Biden has spent a long time in politics and knows that sort of thing happens. However, he also will know the best way of extracting the best advantage out of a situation, he will have seen it all before.

Go back 4 months and it's still unclear who might have won this election. As it stands, there was no blue wave, Dem lost seats in the house, are trying extremely hard to win senate seats ( no republican has ever lost runoff in Georgia - as its stand 48 to Dem and 50 to Rep ) Republicans picks up state legislatures seats, and have tightened their grip on many other places around the USA, No one expected that.

Even in swing states Joe has only won those by 50'000 to 75'000 votes combined, ( he did what trump did last time and go to place that have never voted for the other side in 30 years)

Ohio went for trump and its the first time since 1960 that Ohio has not voted for the person that wins the presidency ( in 1960 that was also when the US got its 1st catholic president) florida hasn't done this since 1992, and trump won majority there as well.

It's a Very strange election, once people start looking at all the states, It's clear people liked Trump/Republicans policies, but just hate that man, while at the same time there's just no enthusiasm for Joe. Is it possible if Trump had toned it down a little he would have been back in for 4 more years?

Rubio isn't good enough for 2024 and nor is half the old guard, They are hated from the view point of the new supporters. They need someone who isn't linked to the old guard, that's the tricky part, you need someone that can keep the current support while only picking up another 100'000 votes in the swing states. There is a few Trump-esk people around who can keep their mouths shut. With the Democrats will ... joe and harris have bigger problems because the people on the left will be pushing big time for certain policies.

I dont believe any president is able to put in a national lockdown as that would override the states,

It would seem no one can agree if joe said he would do it, so it possible people voting because of a lockdown could will be minimal.

Mind you Neither side are following the rules with all these mass public gatherings etc Trump people at his rallies, the democrats out in the streets dancing and popping champagne.

Giuliani is a staunch Republican conservative
Hence the question: how can a true conservative align themselves with Donald Trump? He's running a huge deficit (which balloons the national debt), he's minimising the USA's influence on the global stage (e.g. pulling out of the Paris Agreement, ceding influence in the Pacific region to China, lukewarm affirmation of Article 5 of the NATO treaty, etc.), has used the presidency to personally enrich himself, and any number of other things that should be an anathema to any genuine conservative.

Only one of those is actually organised by a campaign/party though.

If it forces this government into a deal with our nearest allies rather than pandering to the US, while protecting the Good Friday Agreement, then it's only a good thing for me. Let's see if that oven ready deal, was oven ready.

Perhaps it turns out the oven was broken?

Oven ready referred (ironically) to the withdrawal agreement. There has been clear lines for the trade deal for several weeks, both sides are just posturing for slightly better terms.

I do think the "Irish" aspect to Biden is getting overhyped by elements in the media who are desperate to see brexit fail badly (despite the cost that would have to their own country). Ireland matters to Biden but he will be massively stretched both in terms of domestic and foreign policy. He will talk big about brexit and remainers already seem to think a big reversal on brexit is now inevitable... However, unless things go really badly wrong in Northern Ireland he isn't going to push to hard. He doesn't have the political capital and he is shrewd enough to know that a chunk of brexiteers would see the end of our security relationship as a price worth paying for sovereignty.

Biden has no formal influence over Brexit and is likely to have far more important things to do than worry about influencing an agreement or otherwise between two bodies he is not part of.

He will pay attention if a country breaches international law, because that calls into question the trustworthiness of that country. That will be particularly so if Ireland is involved, given his ancestry and the Irish sympathy vote in America. So tearing up a negotiated treaty and at the same time risking the Good Friday Agreement is the perfect way for Boris to start off on the wrong foot with Biden.

A US-UK trade agreement makes only a tiny difference to the British economy (and even less to the US) and even if Biden is 100% in favour of one there would be many others opposed and it would be many years away. The same was true under Trump (mistyped "Grump" there...). On the questionable assumption that Boris has any sense, he will tell everyone that Biden's election changes everything, a US deal is now impossible so we need to forget about it and get a deal with the EU.

Assuming this isn't written in a satirical/sarcastic tone... what what what?!

A great 4 years indeed. For emboldening and legitimizing the racists, xenophobes, white nationalists, sexists, homophobes, transphobes, in tandem with the pandering to such dregs at every turn. 4 years of lies, incompetence, idiocy, blatant corruption and cruelty. 4 years of kissing up to the despots of the world while disregarding and openly insulting close allies. 4 years of eroding the democractic norms the US is founded upon. 4 years of the mind-numbing word explosions that are his tweets....

Yeah, it's been a.... refreshing 4 years alright.

How much longer do we need to listen to the drivel coming out of Donald Trump's mouth?

I've heard better behaviour from a toddler

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Well, with all the current uncertainty around, one thing will be sure and that is that this thread will be running for quite some time.

Barring what would effectively be a reverse coup, this matter will be settled on December 14th when the Electoral College meet and submit their votes. Pennsylvania has already indicated that popular vote there will be honored with its 20 votes going to Biden and there's nothing to indicate that any other state will deviate from established practice. There's far more heat than light to the various legal battles being raised by Republicans.

Trump will leave the White House by a side entrance on January 20th and disappear to Florida. I'm 99% certain of it.

For as long as the media keep reporting it and twitter keeps his account unbanned. It'd be a good day if by the morning of the 21st the media have forgotten about him and twitter finally bans his account as he's no important enough for them to turn a blind eye to the blatant breaches of their terms

In most of the Anglosphere, mainstream conservative blocs are, at least on paper, in favour of government-funded healthcare provision, gun controls and combating climate change.

The Republican Party explicitly isn't. They've lost the popular vote for 20 years now as a result, with one exception post 9/11 in 2004. They're sinking slowly into electoral oblivion as a result, because increasingly the public are aware of the consensus around those policies. The challenge of this election is to get the Republicans into place with as more 'normal' right wing party. They are only able to do so well as they do through gerrymandering and voter suppression.

A new generation of younger Republican representatives could improve this.

Or it could be that they don't want us to pay the enormous price Brexit demands according to the evidence? This isn't very mature to constantly complain about people 'talking Britian down' when it's a misrepresentation of the opinions being given.

He is still the President; he can, and will, do outrageous things. There will be more sackings for starters; anyone who isn't right behind the 'election fraud' issue. He will also want to do anything that gets his name in the history books - possibly the middle east, I reckon he'll want another go at the Nobel Peace Prize. And as @najaB says he's got two-and-a-half months. Its going to be a bumpy ride (and there is no way we will be consulted after Johnson switched to Biden.

Its pretty astounding they are trying to reverse the outcome at this stage. Doing a massive u turn on the importance of Anglo-American relations doesn't increase their credibility. The obvious question would be how would they treat a Republican president if Democrats lose in 4 years? The obvious solution is we should get on with sorting out our own problems and forget about a role in the world.

I voted remain and a deal with the EU on the terms on offer to the UK would satisfy most moderate remainers and brexiteers. The extremes on both sides may try to fight the battle through other issues for years to come but hopefully the rest of us can move on. If this situation forces the Tories to realise that the US does not value the UK then that is something that should be welcomed, but it won't make them reconsider their view of the EU.

They're not though are they? This isn't a mainstream view by any means. Look I'm sorry, I know you enjoy your analysis of this point but 'reversing the outcome' isn't seriously on the agenda of any contributor who matters. Even the Liberal Democrats have dropped it!

Fox News, of all people, cut away from White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany's press conference yesterday on the basis that she was making unsubstantiated charges that the Democrats welcome fraud and illegal voting. So hopefully we'll be subjected to less nonsense from Trump and his acolytes than we otherwise would have been - the press has worked out who's won and isn't going to suck up to the loser any more. With reduced media coverage, hopefully the legal processes will work themselves out in relative quiet and we'll get the confirmation from the states on or before December 8th. followed by the actual votes for the new president on December 14th.

Trump's bluster and wind won't have the same effect if it's generally ignored in the interim.
