What on earth is going on with East Midlands Railway services to Sheffield on 27th December ?

There seem to have been no AP fares released on this route on this date, even though several weeks afterwards have been released. Needless to say, there's nothing on NRE about any engineering works on the route on that date. I have to ask myself, does the railway actually want to recover some passengers after a dire year, because it doesn't seem that way with this sort of nonsense.

I suppose it would mean post Christmas works. It is, of course, only the first Sunday after

Christmas + Planned Engineering Work + Covid

Seems simple to me.

None of this planned engineering work is showing up on NRE.

One would have thought they might have postponed it, given the ECML is closed that day (which is showing up on NRE).

Perhaps. The trains appear to be running at the moment anyway.

I've given up after spending the last few minutes searching Network Rail for planned works, seems they want everyone to use NRE as I just end up going round in circles on NR website trying to find specific details of forthcoming works...

I must admit, I hadn't even considered that.

The amended timetable for that date won't have been confirmed yet, likely not for another week and a half.

Quite the opposite, COVID is likely to have more work chucked in as a result. If NR and operators consider it not to be an issue with the ECML at the same time then it isn't going to get postponed. STP for Xmas should be published this week, but the plan is as stable as Donald Trump currently.

It's dissappointing that we're still at the stage where it's seen as acceptable to contemplate closing two side by side InterCity routes North at the same time, particularly at a time of year when more people will need to travel.

If anything, the release of pressure due to COVID should make it easier for the industry to accommodate passengers on the route that should remain open. Where is this new passenger focused railway that the latest boss of NR promised us ?

The information for that day on NRE reads:
https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/172059.aspx
London St Pancras International - Corby / Derby / Nottingham / Sheffield:

East Midlands Railway will be running an increased timetable to and from London St Pancras International. This is due to the major engineering work taking place on the line into London Kings Cross.
A number of London St Pancras International to Derby trains will be extended through to Sheffield.
Most services between Corby and Kettering have been extended to London St Pancras International. These services will be calling additionally at Wellingborough, Bedford, Luton and Luton Airport Parkway.
This suggests that NR are keeping the MML open and that EMR are operating in a passenger-focused manner, even if the timetable is not yet available.

I'd imagine that they don't want to commit to a particular service level until they know how many staff are available. I can't imagine anyone who isn't contractually obliged to work that day doing so especially considering how bad a year it's been so far and that it will be a rare chance to get a proper Christmas period off work.

You never know, there might be more people available if no one's allowed to visit anyone !

As has been said upthread, Christmas / New Year alterations haven’t been published yet. They should be out in the next week, although there is always the possibility of a big spanner being chucked in between now and then which means it all has to be redone again. (The spanner being increased numbers of staff being off work due to the virus, meaning there aren’t enough to run the service).

It's now two weeks since the last post on this thread, and like Diana Ross "I'm still waiting".

The problem seems common to MML and WCML (not bothered checking ECML due to the engineering works planned).

The EMR amended timetable for the week between Christmas and New Year was published yesterday. I don’t know why the fares haven’t been activated.

Avanti’s changes are not published yet due to their late change to the base service.

Usually takes a couple of days after NR publication before it makes it way downstream to fares data. Try at the back end of this week, however be warned if operators are making late changes due to COVID then publication could be later still.

All services shown on Journey Planner have got a note with a caveat saying they can be subject to alteration and to check nearer the time due to possible COVID alterations.
