They had to let the university students go back as they had already had their £9,000s.

I'm not sure universities get fees until students arrive and enrol. Even then there is a "cooling off" period during which students can change their mind and withdraw at no cost. Accommodation is more complicated as quite often the residences are not owned by the university.

This is an utter disgrace; both what it is, and the way this has been handled today.

I intent to actively flout this to the maximum extent possible.

Bets on how long before civil disobedience happens.

He is utterly useless, and has to go ASAP. Completely not cut out for this.

Luckily the smaller places I went to were fine and nothing like the larger supermarket. But this has been handled atrociously, and its going to be a grim week ahead.

On Wednesday this will be voted on. It will be interesting - but unlikely - that there would be a rebellion from all individuals.

Does anyone find it strange, that as soon as London started getting a rise, he's implemented a full lockdown? Yet he's not bothered implementing the local measures on the south... divide?

I thought the same. It hid some rather critical scaling information on some graphs, so I do wonder if it was intentional or not...
I think that may have been the way the BBC broadcast the screen, along with the BSL interpreter being in the way. The data seemed to be fine on the TV screen in the conference room itself.

Reading between the lines there's a lot he didn't say. I heard nothing about travel restrictions. I heard nothing about tradespeople working in your house.

Same. I want to punch my TV set.

I see we’ve just had the promise “by the spring”.
I think he could have been clearer with the restrictions, something like "I will now read out what you can and can't do" rather than sort of bumble into it.
Luckily the smaller places I went to were fine and nothing like the larger supermarket. But this has been handled atrociously, and its going to be a grim week ahead.
Luckily I have plenty of food in storage, so the only things I will need to go out to buy are fresh (like milk etc). However, we do appear to have basically run out of toilet paper in the (university accommodation) flat...

I wonder what will happen if it is rejected in parliament?

I assume furlough is being extended?
Yes, for another month. Coincidentally the same length as the new lockdown. I wonder who thought of that...? :D
EDIT: also beaten by HLE

Yes, I heard nothing specifically banning non-essential travel*, although obviously that is implied by "you must stay at home".

*Does a trip to the Isle of Wight to go on the class 483s before they are scrapped count as essential? It'll certainly be good for my mental health!

My god, we're going to be as broke as we were in 1945.

Yep. Even without the extension many industries including rail would have required financial support for months and even years to come.

Not going to be pretty paying this lot off.

Funny how a couple of weeks ago they didn't have enough to pay workers in Manchester in Tier 3, now they got enough for furlough for another couple of months.

Don't worry, in the future Britain will be able to pay it all of with all of those high income jobs from a highly educated workforce with all manner of international trading as a leading voice in a global superpower. Oh wait

Sounds like a pretty good excuse if that's your thing, golf will likely be off the cards for November although with the typcial British weather that's normal!

Almost like it was always about the politics for Government and never about the money and support...

It would surely have to be a confidence issue? If it fails to pass then the House surely has no confidence in HM Government.

It will go through, as Labour wanted this all along, and there won't be enough tories rebelling

I'll admit to not being very up-to-speed with stuff like this; what does that actually mean? Does the world end? :D

They have a period of time to prove they do have the confidence of the house, otherwise the opposition attempt to prove they have the confidence, or if that fails - general election

I live in East Cambridgeshire, where the rate currently stands at 39 cases per 100,000. The fact that we're being lumbered with this is just ridiculous, I agree with other posts around the forum that the tier system hasn't been given long enough to prove whether it's effective. Furious is an understatement.

(For the record, I'm in favour of shielding the elderly/vulnerable and letting the virus run its course among everyone else, like many of you on here.)

They don’t have a clue what they’re doing. I bet this afternoon has been extremely fractious behind the scenes, even with this spineless cabinet.

No mention of shielding unless I’ve missed anything?

People will continue to socialise, children will continue to mix in schools. This is going to make little if any difference, apart from cause economic carnage.

Is it me or do all three of them appear extremely flustered?

So much of this is the same as March, isn’t it. Promises of magic tests, vaccines, lockdown to figure things out a bit more in terms of medical treatment, rubbish questions from journalists, deliberate glossing over of any data which shows this is basically irrelevant for anybody of working age with nothing fundamentally wrong with them in terms of underlying health issues...
