So let's not send the schools in England back until January and keep them open for the children of key workers only as per the Spring.

No.

Kids have already had far too much disruption to their education.

No.

I am currently in first year at University. My course is being delivered fully online and it is now the end of week 4. I am disengaged, unmotivated and directionless, and this is with (thankfully) having quite a lot of background knowledge in the subject. I'd hate to think what online school would be like.

Bloody hope this doesn't turn out to be true. A full 4 week national lockdown will finish off many businesses in the hospitality and leisure industry. And more depressingly, I think the number of suicides will go through the roof. Many people in particular vulnerable people living on their own just won't be able to take going through all this yet again. Please god NO to this predicted full national 4 week lockdown.

I'd really love to sue the government for the mental health damages they've caused by this.

I'd be interested in seeing how Wales locking down has impacted on them compared to England. Obviously it's too early to know the fuller picture.
Who cares how it's doing now, it's how we do at the end of it that's the important thing.

The Mail is reporting it too with the headline “PM to bow to scientists grim warning.”

Absolutely mad. What was that old quote about insanity being trying the same thing over and over again expecting a different result?

Time to protest this one, we can't do this.

It will be mass non-compliance, followed by civil disobedience if there’s any attempt to do serious enforcement.

Also fast-track to civil disobedience if de-Piffle does anything stupid like masks outside.

Likewise if people’s work is closed and they don’t get paid enough to get by. 80% in return for a couple of months jollity during a fine spring is one thing, 60% entombed at home during mid autumn is quite another prospect.

I don’t know, there’s enough people who whilst not anti-mask find them uncomfortable enough that they don’t like wearing them any more than bare minimum.
Thing is, outside your home would then become "the bare minimum".

Same when they were first introduced on public transport in June - that would have been the bare minimum. Then shops, then other public indoor places, then staff canteens, etc. You get the picture.

Great, now there will probably be panic buying in the supermarkets this weekend again, whether this turns out to happen or not.

What will be the reason/lie given for the 'lockdown' this time? We should totally refuse any suggestion that this is to avoid the NHS not coping, as that's just a failure of government who have had months to prepare. They had some excuse in March but absolutely none now.

Not disagreeing, however for me personally public transport I can avoid or failing that not complying isn’t a major issue. Shops I can minimise or switch to Amazon (both of which I’ve done). However going out isn’t something I’m prepared to work around, it will be happening whether Hancock likes it or not.

I suspect enough people will feel the same, which gives a critical mass. Certainly judging by conversations with friends and work colleagues I am by no means the only one thinking like this.

Saturday probably isn’t going to be a good time to be doing the weekly shop now...

God knows, some lies. I don’t think they’ll say the only remaining truth which at this point is basically temporarily delaying the deaths of people aged >90 or with dementia (either group makes up fully one quarter of all deaths). Sorry to be crass but that isn’t worth it for me given the extreme harm it will cause to everyone else in society, not even close.

It is a real punch in the gut to see this isn’t it. I don’t even think this will satisfy the locktivists. I can see them saying that because it didn’t happen a few weeks back that they’ll either want it to be longer or for there to be another one after a Christmas break.

The fact this revelation about a National Lockdown has come out in 2 newspapers rather than a press briefing or statement to Parliament, with days of speculation to follow, continues the cowardice behaviour of the Government resorting to deliberate leaks to gauge public mood before a decision, something they've done with practically every other major decision throughout most of this.

Yep it follows the trend perfectly. Leak comes late on the Friday right at the end of the working week. Rumours abound over the weekend, announcement on the Monday evening, then comes in soon after. In this case giving a day to prepare.

Unless there’s a conspicuous backlash from one direction or other, perhaps the most obvious being from Conservative MPs, I’d say the above is now highly likely.

It’s interesting that one newspaper intimates that the lockdown is to protect the NHS, whilst the other intimates its “the only way to save Christmas”. Yes really, save Christmas. Have we completely lost our marbles now?

Yes I don't see the backlash from party MPs and right-wing media stopping the decision, particularly as there isn't much they can do about it over a weekend, but they'll certainly make their grievances known do everything possible to undermine the core Government throughout such a lockdown.

With regard to what this lockdown plans to include, if schools and universities remain open, there's not a huge point in actually doing it as these institutions are likely to keep spreading the virus anyway.

Well if this does happen. Boris has repeatedly said that we just can't have a 2 or 3 week "circuit breaker"(whatever that means!) lockdown, because of the effect it will have on the economy and people's livelihoods. And now he goes and authorises a 4 week full national lockdown! Absolute hypocrite!

They could always keep universities technically open but with students locked in their rooms for the four weeks. Not a million miles different to what’s been going on already! Granted this strategy probably wouldn’t work in schools.

It’s also going to be au-revoir to many thousands of good businesses, that’s pretty much guaranteed.

What a state of affairs that we’re actually having this conversation.

I was wondering about that earlier, whether there might be a case for some kind of legal action. Especially for things like untreated cancers.

I don't think that would get very far, unfortunately. That's taking into consideration the fact I lost my auntie a couple of months ago due to a lung and brain tumour, diagnosed a couple of weeks before everyone started panicking about the scaryvirus.

The best way would be to vote them out.

Also has Boris and other members of the cabinet not taken into account we may have reached the peak in cases? Cases hit 26,888 NINE days ago, and cases have not risen to or above that amount since! We may have reached the peak. Why go into a catastrophic 4 week national lockdown??!!

Really can't stand much more of this. It's been 7 months of all this now, and things are just getting worst and worst. Not sure how I'm going to react if indeed there is an "address to the nation" on Monday that we're going into this 4 week lockdown. My mental health and anger will hit boiling point I think.

There is a feeling of deja vu now of next Monday night being similar to that same Monday night we had in March with Boris addressing the country.

The biggest difference now is that we have an economy on its a**e and sadly we don't have the small comfort of warm weather, light evenings and endless hours to sit in our parks and gardens.

This second lockdown is going to be a catastrophic to say the least. BJ probably knows that once he has publically made the decision - some issues will be literally past the point of no return.

The trouble at the moment as voting out would simply hand the baton to Starmer and possibly give some greater influence to Sturgeon. Apart from some sharper comms I’m not convinced that’s going to help that much.

A change of Conservative leadership possibly would help, but who?

Having said that, I will absolutely not vote Conservative next time round if BJ is still leader, but I don’t think that’s likely anyway!

There is one small irony - for my locality at least the current forecast is for fine weather from Wednesday onwards!

That won’t cut it though, as short days and muddy footpaths will mean it won’t be as much of an outdoors bonanza as before.

Something else to consider is that a lot of people have got unhealthier over this year. I saw a work colleague this week who had been shielding, and he has put on a massive amount of weight. So not got Covid, but now probably morbidly obese instead. Not good.

That is a good point, I'm struggling to think of any candidate from any party who would be worthy.

More over, I'll be interested to see how this is lockdown - if it does turn out to happen - is implemented. I'm wondering if this will be the ever so illusive 4th tier, and all local authorities in England will be unceremoniously upgraded free of charge to this plan?

Are people still playing that card

Labour would have locked us down stricter and for longer, the only difference is that they would have funded furlough etc better to enable it
