Bus company had to spend time and effort pursuing the appeal though.

BBC News article

BBC Article - ticket for parked bus withdrawn

Market Harborough parking ticket for bus in bus stop withdrawn
A parking ticket that was put on a bus during a layover at a stop has been withdrawn.

The driver of the 44 service was issued the ticket in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, on 6 July.

Centrebus had said it was "a slap in the face" for drivers who continued to work during lockdown.

Leicestershire County Council said it had now considered the firm's "representations" and would not be "pursuing the case".

Centrebus has been operating the 44 route from Foxton to Fleckney on behalf of the county council for several years, said operations manager Mick Rossiter.

As part of the council timetable, the service requires a 20-minute layover in Market Harborough before resuming the service.

Mr Rossiter said the driver took a break and fetched a sandwich - minutes later he received a ticket.

'Appeared unattended

The £70 penalty charge notice was issued for stopping on a restricted bus stop or stand.

The authority said the notice "was issued as the bus appeared to be parked up and unattended".

However, a spokesperson has since said: "We advised Centrebus of the appeal process.

"We've carefully considered their representations and, on this occasion, we won't be pursuing the case."

There's a mention on the wmbusphotos forum, that Arriva's Cannock depot has now been sold to Centrebus. It was rumoured for a while, and there's no actual announcement yet, but it's interesting if true. Apparently NX will take over the Walsall - Cannock services from Arriva.

Do you have a source for this? It wouldn't surprise me if true, as Cannock under Arriva has always has a rather neglected feel to it.

That the operations there are at a low ebb is not in question, and the more modern fleet (Streetlites, Pulsars) have been moved to other depots. That has generated a lot of chatter on the WM Bus Forum about a disposal for some weeks. AFAIK, nothing has been confirmed about a sale or to whom, but it wouldn't be a huge shock IF it were to be sold that a Peddle or a Dunn would add it to their neighbouring empires.

Stevenage Depot is due to close from the end of service on Saturday 10th April. Some routes will transfer to Luton, with others going to other operators. On paper Chiltern Automotive, currently primarily a vehicle repair/restoration firm based just north of High Wycombe, have the gained the most routes, but these are all operable by a single vehicle on different days of the week and sandwiched between a school run on route 215.

Due to difficult trading conditions and the future uncertainty cast by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, we have taken the difficult decision to cease operations from our Stevenage depot and have entered into formal consultation with our employees.

A substantial number of routes operated from Stevenage will be transferred to our depot in Luton which is located approximately 16 miles away. Employees have been offered continued employment at our Luton operating centre.

Our Managing Director Matt Evans says “our Stevenage operation has struggled over recent years, which coupled with the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has cast uncertainty over the future viability of operations from our base in Stevenage. I’d like to stress that the decision to close the depot in no way reflects the hard work, commitment, and dedication of our Stevenage employees. The team in Stevenage, many of them long serving members of staff, have done an excellent job over the years and we hope to maintain employment for as many of them as possible offering employment at our Luton depot.”

We have operated from our Whitworth Road base in Stevenage since 2007, providing a mixture of commercial, subsidised and school services throughout this time and employing around 50 employees at the site. The last day of operation from the site is expected to be on Saturday 10th April 2021.

The following services will continue to be operated by Centrebus from our Luton depot:
  • 44/45 Luton to Stevenage
  • 80 Stevenage to Hitchin
  • 81/81A Westmill to Hitchin
  • 89 Hitchin to Henlow Camp
  • 304 Hitchin to St Albans
  • 314 Hitchin to Welwyn Garden City
  • 315 Hitchin to Kimpton
  • 85/85A Biggleswade Town Service
  • 96/96A Stotfold to Letchworth
  • 188/190 Biggleswade to Potton/Sandy
From the 11th April 2021, the following services which are funded by Hertfordshire County Council will no longer be operated by Centrebus:
  • 18 Royston to Buntingford will be operated by Richmonds Coaches
  • 308/380 Hertford to Cuffley will be operated by Central Connect
  • 378/379 Hertford to Stevenage will be operated by Central Connect
  • 333 Pinehurst to Bengeo will be operated by Central Connect
  • M1/M2/M3/M4/M5 Ware Town services will be operated by Central Connect
  • 10 Stevenage to Bedwell will be operated by A2B Travel Group
  • 200 Essendine Mills to Colney Fields will be operated by Chiltern Automotive
  • 201 Welwyn Garden City to Welham Greens will be operated by Chiltern Automotive
  • 203 Welwyn Garden City to Watton at Stone will be operated by Chiltern Automotive
  • 204/206 Welwyn Garden City to Panshanger will be operated by Chiltern Automotive
  • 215 Welwyn Garden City to Codicote will be operated by Chiltern Automotive
  • 230 Welwyn Garden City to St Albans will be operated by Chiltern Automotive
  • 312 Bell Bar to Hatfield will be operated by Chiltern Automotive

I went on a trip on Tuesday which included four Centrebus journeys.

I started in Rothwell, Northamptonshire, and took Stagecoach MAN 22833 on the 19 to Corby. This was a terrible bus, it seemed underpowered - sounded just like a Dart not a MAN, has it been re-engined with a smaller engine? - and the noise from the gearbox / diff / drive shaft / axle at speed and and under load was deafening.

Then I moved to Centrebus. The first bus on the RF1 to Uppingham, an E200, was late - it appeared to have left Melton Mowbray nearly an hour late on the previous journey but made up a lot and was only about 15 minutes late leaving Corby and arriving at Uppingham. Then I got a Solo on the 12 to Stamford and an E200 on the 9 to Oakham, the latter with a new driver being supervised. Finally the original E200 on the RF1, by now on time, from Oakham to Melton Mowbray.

Uppingham, Stamford and Oakham are all lovely places and I had about an hour in each. Very middle class and well kept, Stamford especially has a great deal to see. A pleasant green near the castle in Oakham was a good place to enjoy some lunch. And the rides were through surprisingly lush and rolling countryside (except north of Oakham), with extremely pretty villages (but not Edith Weston!) and the odd glimpse of Rutland Water. I had not been to this area for many years.

Now I bought a Centrebus Network day ticket for £8 which I thought was quite reasonable for four journeys. However at Uppingham I noticed a poster saying that for this week only all journeys starting or finishing at Oakham or Uppingham would be free, courtesy of Rutland Council. All my four journeys met this criteria - indeed one of each permutation. And at Uppingham when I got on the 12 there was a man from the council, complete with clipboard (but no peaked cap), interrogating passengers and drivers about whether they were doing this properly and whether it would encourage them to travel by bus. The only other passenger boarding the 12 at Uppingham had just paid and the driver was told to reimburse him - there seemed to be some confusion although Centrebus clearly had been told about it. My first driver on the RF1 had mentioned nothing. The same man with (presumably) the same clipboard was later at Oakham where he met my arriving 9 and departing 12 with the same agenda. Had I been given my four free trips, as I should have been, then I guess the council would have reimbursed Centrebus rather more than £8 - and the council would have considered the venture more successful by 4 trips - a win-win-win!

The RF1 is normally hourly with a three hour round trip time and three buses out. At present, for about 3 months, a bridge on the road between Oakham and Uppingham is closed so they are running via a diversion making a three hour round trip impossible, so during the peaks they do the closest they can and during the day it is every 90 minutes, sticking to the three buses but with longer breaks at Melton. First you would have thought that someone - the council or Network Rail - should be funding an extra vehicle to maintain the frequency. Then, on the day, one bus was missing, in that it would appear that the 11.24 from Corby had terminated at Uppingham at about 12.30. The same bus (if BusTimes is correct, which it may be because my first bus claimed to be 555 but was actually something else) then resumed from Melton Mowbray about 15 minutes late around 14.20. The gap in service had been spotted by the man with the clipboard at Oakham and left a 3 hour gap in what should be an hourly service. Not the way to attract customers! Nothing on the Centrebus website / twitter about the missing bus - or, come to that, the free travel - in fact nothing this week at all. Not really good enough - I got the impression of an operator just about keeping its head above water.

From Melton Mowbray it was Arriva to Leicester on a DAF/Wright decker, walk to the station, and a train (222) to Kettering. I had 12 minutes to walk (uphill!) to Horse Market for the 18/19 to Rothwell which I just managed only to find no bus. The scheduled vehicle - the very same noisy MAN - was running about 25 minutes late on its previous journey due to road works in Rothwell. So we left 25 minutes late, only 5 minutes ahead of the next bus which for some reason had not been similarly delayed. These road works were horrendous and completely absurd, with three way traffic lights delaying three roads for some scaffolding in one of them and the traffic light timing making no allowance for most of the evening peak traffic being in one direction. It took our bus nearly 30 minutes from joining the queue on the A14 exit slip to getting through the village. I got off at the first stop, walked up the hill and explored the village centre (quite pleasant) and got back to my car just as the bus finally headed off towards Corby about 45 minutes late.

Not wishing to drag this thread off topic, but I totally agree with the above. Those MANs are terrible vehicles and are also unreliable - Stagecoach all over the country are scrapping them even at 11-12 years old.

Thanks for the travelogue. Aside from a return trip to Melton from Nottingham about 20 years ago that I neglected to record, the whole Belvoir/Rutland area is a place I've not explored by bus (though I have cycled it). I must have a little look there as the scenery is quite lovely, as you say.

In respect of your sickly MAN, it's one of those troublesome ones that Stagecoach purchased. @Jordan Adam knows a bit about them and what remedial work may have been done. However, I think a few have already met their maker.

According to my fleetlist, at least 30 have been scrapped - mostly from West Scotland, Highlands and West.

Can't speak for that particular one, but I know Stagecoach has repowered a lot of MAN vehicles with Cummins units. This Facebook post from 2019 by Alexander Dennis, who was undertaking the work, suggests at least 70 vehicles.

Alexander Dennis Limited

14 May 2019 ·

The highly-trained team in our workshops at Anston and Harlow carries out work ranging from the most minor repairs to extensive rebuilds or refurbishments.
At the moment we are in the middle of delivering on a contract with Stagecoach to repower 70 Enviro300 vehicles with new Cummins Euro 6 engines. This will improve reliability and will significantly bring down carbon and local emissions, providing a boost for air quality and the environment. Offered as a complete package, our work includes full sign-off from engine manufacturer Cummins to ensure the vehicles will be fully supported.
Over half of the buses in the contract have now been completed and delivered back to the customer, where they are now in full operation and performing to expectations!

Just to clarify on this, it seems these are for High Peak for the 199. Can anyone confirm this?

Centrebus have filed (eventually) their accounts for the year to April 2025. Overall they're very healthy financially with a 13% increase in sales to £48m and a big jump in operating profit from £4.7m to £6m. Splitting the results between the different businesses (from their respective statutory accounts) shows D&G contributing more than half the profit.

"Other" includes Centrebus South and possibly some HQ costs - there is no profit and loss disclosed for Centrebus Ltd (the operating company for Centrebus South) so I am assuming these are the balancing numbers in the group accounts.

Considering that much of D&G and Chaserider business has come from moving into areas that Arriva (Wardle, Winsford, Macclesfield, Cannock) and First (Crewe) discarded as unprofitable these are remarkable results - with a level of profitability (in D&G) that the big groups don't achieve. It's good to see that newer vehicles have been introduced over the last couple of years and I wonder if they do benefit from the lack of competition in areas like Cheshire with council tenders.

I don't know much about the other Centrebus operations so can't comment on them but note the big improvement in profitability in Centrebus North.

These results do not include High Peak which is 50% owned by Julian Peddle (and Wellglade owning the other 50%).

Over the last 12-18 months Centrebus North (Leicester and Grantham ops) have gained lots of new contracts around Leicestershire including most of the FoxConnect DRT network and several LCC routes.

Centrebus are definitely benefiting from all this BSIP funding that was awarded.

Additions at Leicester depot are plain white E200mmcs
1001 - YX21 RYF
1002 - YX23 ORG

unsure if these two are loans but as they are in the 1xxx fleet numbers I'd guess they are.

Chaserider have Littles E200 B28 LTL on loan as 1000 as cover for 505 following it's fire last week.

Centrebus Leicester's Hospital Hopper service is celebrating 20 years of operation.

Although first Leicester did operate it between 2006 and July 2009 then Centrebus took it over using three centros and two omnilinks, it's recently been extended to the Ashton Green housing development north of Beaumont Leys.

From the video - expected passenger usage was 5,000 a week but is now around 12,000 a week.
