A career as a signaller

I’ve seen some posts about what to wear at signalling school,

surely,
black jeans (no rips), Plain T-Shirt and black trainers is fine.

no problem going out and buying “smarter” clothing, but if it’s not an issue wearing the above, I won’t as it’s not something I would wear daily anyway. And not particularly something I would find training in comfortable. Cheers

If it helps, I've just had my information pack for signalling school, and it says the dress code is 'smart casual', and goes on to say that this excludes 'shorts, ripped jeans, sports tops, track suits, jogging bottoms and trainers'.

Starting in Derby on Monday. Nervous and excited at the same time - it's been a long time since I was last at school!

It's not fraud at the moment... as clearly no dishonesty on your part. BUT, if you ignore it and continue to accept the money and subsequently it is shown to have been paid in error then you will almost certainly have to pay it back. And if they can prove that you knew you weren't entitled to it and did nothing about it then it COULD be construed as fraud.

A more extreme example might be people you hear about who get a wrongly routed million pounds land in their account and they decide to go out and buy a couple of Ferraris even though they know the money is not theirs...

No one is saying you have done anything wrong, most likely payroll/HR have messed up. Possibly, a policy has changed and the payment is correct? But to cover yourself you should flag it to your LOM and/or payroll preferably by email so that there is an audit trail. If they say it is all correct then enjoy the extra at Christmas!

As I said would, i have already emailed my LOM and it's being dealt with. Just felt a little that some people were trying to suggest I'd been doing something deliberately wrong :(
I'm happy that I saw the post about this, otherwise I'd never have known to flag it or indeed that anything was even wrong!

VASC is two signalling centres in one building, one the “Central Panels” will going to to TBROC the other the “Eastern Panels” is rumoured to be going to Gillingham ROC. All would say is know what half your applying for so you can amend your commute from Clapham Junction (VASC) onto Crawley for TBROC or Clapham Junction (VASC) onto Gillingham for the Signalling Centre there as it’s not a ROC yet.

Worried my comment came across in this way, I’ve gone right back to the question. I can’t see anyone who has either openly accused or even suggested you deliberately claimed FP.

The one comment which says “wrangled” or words to that effect is clearly delivered a a joke, no way is it accusing.

Signalling school starting sooner than I thought, just recieved the call, Monday at Glasgow

Good luck, and enjoy it. We'll be starting at the same time but in different places. Hope the earlier start gives you a chance to get organised for being away.

Interesting...

There's space on the operating floor for a few more workstations, but not too many. Gillingham is a repurposed BR-era building (initially intended as a 1990s IECC) so the operating floor is much smaller than a new-build ROC like TBROC - maybe a quarter of the size. Plus, there are only two floors, and no easy means of expanding.

Only signallers, MOMs and S&T based there currently. My understanding is that at least one other function would need to relocate there for it to qualify as a ROC? There's long been talk of ECROs moving in, but don't think anything is confirmed as yet.

Sorry Amanda, didn’t realise it might offend. Was only using wrangled in a jovial manner and in no way was I accusing. Merely a “you lucky buggar” type comment.

Thanks much appreciated. But do we know roughly when it will be moving?

I’ll prepare to go until I’m told otherwise. Guessing a big issue will be if the hotel is allowed to stay open for guests.

I'm currently at IST and been told course will likely continue as long as hotel remains open. I'm hoping hotels will be allowed to remain open for key workers and that we can be classed as such!

The guidance is if you can work from home, stay at home.

I doubt anything will change with IST and during last lock down there was plenty hotels open for "essential workers".

Don't be disheartened - but definitely not a bad thing to update your CV. I don't know how many rejections I've had so far (maybe I'm that one gentleman that @LOM mentioned a few months back!), but every rejection simply tells me I need to improve what I'm submitting. So far 3 CV revisions, the addition of a cover letter, and countless tweaks to the 70 questions.
Nice to see your perseverance. What did u say in your cover letter, I'm applying for operative roles when they come up in the area. Any pointers or tips would be a massive help

I’m currently at IST and government guidance says hotels can open for work purposes and talking to our trainer many weeks ago if anything like this were to arise me and the guys on the course were pretty much told it would continue so anyone currently on IST or about to start I’d say it will more than likely still continue

I've lost the website link but, if you google 'Network Rail Redeployment services', it should come up with a .pdf file, it has a load of useful info regarding cover letters and cvs.

Yes I've read the updated government guidance online this evening which is applicable from 5th November and it does say hotels can remain open for work purposes so hopefully all should be well and things will continue without disruption.

Hello all,
It could all be a bit early to ask but just wondering if anyone that started IST today were given any instruction or indication as to whether or not training will be delayed due to the lockdown or if it will just be carrying on as normal?
thanks :)

I started today, and the gist of it is that it's all going ahead as planned until such time as we are told something different. Personally I don't think that will change unless the government were to introduce even stricter measures.
