Would you like to see the line through Woodhead Tunnel reopened to reinstate the second and faster direct route between Manchester and Sheffield?

Why was the line closed in the first place and why isn't it being considered for reopening instead of the Hope Valley upgrade? The line and its structures are still very much intact and the last few miles between Stocksbridge and Sheffield still a live railway.

Last time I checked, it had had 400kv high power electricity cabling installed through the 1950s "new" Woodhead tunnel.

Here we go again! Several reasons:

- It has the least amount of people living nearby
- It couldn’t link with Midland
- Victoria is a dreadful location for a station
- The Tunnel is in use by the National Grid so you’d have to build a new tunnel

I thought the electricity cables go through the smaller bore? I've walked right up to the main portal at the Crowden end and there were no cables from what I could see.

Why is Sheffield Victoria a dreadful location for a station?

Ironically isn't there a light railway for servicing purposes, in the bigger bore?

Because it has no real scope for interchange with any other heavy rail routes, trams or most bus services. It also isn't well situated in relation to most retail, business, cultural, education, tourist, etc. premises in the City Centre.

Can I ask if you have ever walked there?

"Faster" direct route?

It takes the Glossop service half an hour to cover the dozen miles for Dinting to Piccadilly - you're going to struggle to run anything "fast" down there (plus there are other stoppers west of Guide Bridge)

Plus, the line through Dinting might be operated by trams before any Woodhead line gets as far as a feasibility study.

Why is Sheffield Victoria a dreadful location for a station?

It is a dreadful location for a station.

You're up on a viaduct, on the "wrong" side of the Ring Road, some distance from the centre of Sheffield, nowhere near any other train station, nowhere near a tram stop, parking would be pretty limited, there's not much nearby (Wicker is handy for some fried chicken at three in the morning but it's not like Sheffield Victoria is near any A-list locations in the way that Manchester Victoria was at least next to the Arena in the days before other developments started filling the gaps between Arndale and Victoria).

This isn't just an anti-Woodhead thing - it'd have been a dreadful location for an HS2 station as was proposed a few years ago.

No, but I know it connects directly to the line through Woodhouse and Shireoaks, so direct links between Manchester and south east Sheffield towards Retford would then be possible.

I hope you don't mind if I re-phrase this to:

'Would you like to see a faster direct route between Manchester and Sheffield ?'

My answer: yes, absolutely!

The photographer's caption explains the cable placed in the 1950s in the old original tunnels was reaching the end of its life which is why they put the replacement cables into the 1950s tunnel.

Only at the expense of diverting those trains away from the far more useful 'Midland' site as well (to which they have become well-accustomed for around 50 years).

Yes. Gareth Dennis even has a YouTube on why not and he is very pro rail.

It is worth pointing out the Beeching report proposed keeping Woodhead and Matlock - Chinley and closing Hope Valley. BR did the opposite.

BR would still have been shifting veritable trainloads of coal via the Woodhead Tunnel at the time that "The Reshaping of British Railways" came out in 1963. This freight traffic had dramatically reduced less than 15 years later when closure of the line was being considered. And passenger workings had also all gone by then, hadn't they?

Variations on a Mottram in Longdendale bypass, Manchester- >Sheffield motorway link, and/or Trans Pennine tunnel, etc., etc. seem to appear every 15 years or so. Reckon it's some work creation scheme for planners and consultants.

Sheffield Victoria is perfectly aligned for a new faster line from Sheffield to Manchester though, which is what presumably all these folk who call for Woodhead to be reopened want!

Located on a viaduct is neither here no they're as either on the outward or return you would still have to navigate between the platforms, on a viaduct makes access from beneath ideal instead of a footbridge. The ring road is a shame however, if this station or rather what is left was brought back into use then I would try to route it around upon the other side.

You could connect it to Midland by tram, it would be kinda of like Birmingham Interchange on HS2 although not connected by some silly people mover thing with insufficient capacity. Alternative or in addition you could construct a heavy rail interchange by the tram depot at Nunnery Square.

Interestingly it is about the same distance away from the University of Sheffield in comparison to Midland.

Passenger services ceased in 1970 IIRC, after the Beeching proposals had been implemented.

Hope Valley should have closed as both Sheffield & Derby would have had better services from Manchester if that had happened.

The Beeching proposals were to close the Hope Valley line and retain the other 2 Trans-Pennine routes. The main factor in getting rid of Woodhead as a passenger route appears to have been the difficulty in diverting trains into Sheffield Midland station, as BR where possible wished to close separate "duplicate" stations to save money, not just in Sheffield.

The tunnel is not, of course, built to current standards. It would not comply with the TSI's for Tunnels and PRM.

I doubt you would be able to convince the DfT that there was a safe way to evacuate a passenger train in an emergency, the TSI's call for a walkway beside the train suitable for a wheelchair. I don't know the details of the tunnels construction and things like internal escape routes or provision for smoke extraction within the tunnel or, indeed, how long it is. All of these things would need to be addressed, risk analysis undertaken, mitigation measures identified and the DfT convinced it was safe to run a passenger service before you could proceed.

I’ll put it this way:

Reopening the Bakewell line would be more likely than Woodhead.

One question never answered in the "Bring back Woodhead" threads is... would this be as well as the existing Hope Valley services from Sheffield to Manchester? Or instead of (thus freeing up some capacity on the line through Heeley)? Would Manchester passengers have to decide between two Sheffield stations when looking for their train home (stations twenty minutes walk apart, so quite frustrating if you miss your train and then have to schlep over the unattractive walkways over Park Square roundabout to get to the other station?

If the plan is to replace at least some of the Hope Valley services then does this mean removing the through trains from places like Doncaster to Manchester?

Sheffield Victoria is perfectly aligned for a new faster line from Sheffield to Manchester though, which is what presumably all these folk who call for Woodhead to be reopened want!

As I said above, it takes the Glossop trains half an hour to cover the dozen miles from Dinting to Piccadilly, so you're not going to be able to path anything particularly fast down there (with the threat of Metrolink making the local services even more frequent).

Located on a viaduct is neither here no they're as either on the outward or return you would still have to navigate between the platforms, on a viaduct makes access from beneath ideal instead of a footbridge

It is a big issue if you are wanting to find space for a modern accessible route down to Wicker below for passengers - can't just try on people using the steep steps that were acceptable fifty years ago when the passenger services finished.

You could force everyone to use the long ramp down to Furnival Road, but that's a fair walk to the nearest bus stop etc.

The area of the city centre closest to Furnival Road has been decimated since Castle Markets closed down, so you're a long way from the main shopping area - it's really not an attractive proposal, especially not in the dark!

I’ll put it this way:

Reopening the Bakewell line would be more likely than Woodhead.

I agree.

And I'll state that, whilst re-opening the Bakewell line would be A Bad Thing (waste of money, doesn't serve anywhere large, wouldn't be any faster for East Midlands - Greater Manchester journeys than the chord at Dore, complete fantasy to try to squeeze long distance high speed services plus lots of slow quarry trains and local passenger services together even without the suggestion of having single track sections to accommodate the Monsal Trail)...

...I'd still rather that we re-opened the Bakewell line than re-opened Woodhead (despite me living in Sheffield) - at least the Bakewell line could use existing stations at each end of the route, unlike the rather problematic situation at Sheffield Victoria)

Speaking of Dore Curve, in the reality once the Hope Valley improvements are complete, is it expected that the East Midlands service will miss out Sheffield and use Dore Curve? Would be a huge improvement for East Midlands-North West passengers.
