Following on from my prev thread. Discovering 25.006 had a cab from a later 25 fitted got me wondering what other locos had different cabs at either end?
to start there was a 44 which had a headcode fitted cab at one end, also I believe there was at least 1 31 with skinhead 1 end and head code boxes other end.

In terms of multiple units the class 126 would apply: normal cab (1st generation dmu style) at one end and a flat end with corridor connection at the other end. They were designed to run in pairs.

I would have to check my notes from various works visits in the 1970s. Seen this definitely and may even have photographs.

They were DMU’s and not locos. I was thinking of Locos which had a cab change during their lives.
Several class 47’s had headcode pans one end and sealed lights at the other

In that case we can add Class 91 locos and Class 153 DMUs

There was a 56 which had one of each cab style. Think there may have also been a 45 with split boxes at one end only.

There was also a class 37 which had a centre headcode box at one end and split headcode boxes at the other. I saw a picture of it a few years ago taken at an angle from which you could actually see the difference between the ends but can't remember on which site.

EDIT: found the picture, it's 37 072:

How far back do you consider the end of the cab? If you include driver access doors, then are class 66 cabs different at either end in that the doors are different distances from the front?

Was there also a class 40 possibly a ScR allocated one with central headcode box at one end only can you recall, or is my memory failing me?

I know 40.060 to 40.065were built with discs then later modified with 4 character central panels, these were easy identified by the square edges to the headcode boxes and a drop in the bottom of the cab nose where the gangway uses to be.

I never understood why they received the 4 character boxes as SCR rarely used them.

45149 has different headcode panels either end. Was rebuilt after an accident in 1967, guessing wasn't a whole new cab. Quite a bit must have been changed as has two air pipes in cab one end but only single pipe loco reading only main reservoir air pressure so would imagine at least driver's desk forward was rebuilt?

Class 41 HST prototype power cars, unlike the production ones the 41s had a small shunting cab at the blunt end. Would this count?

A couple of unique class 40s

40127 was a split box locomotive but had doors from a disc headcode 40 at one end

40131 was the same but with the discs removed, leaving it looking odd

And interestingly the position of the white dots on the split boxes is different between the 2 locos, didn't realise there was variation with the class in that regard.

56049 was constructed with the earlier style aluminium cabs with the more rounded ends (and small horn grille) as per the rest of the class 56 fleet up to 56055. Following collision damage, one cab was replaced with a more angular later build steel cab (with large horn grille) from similarly damaged 56122.

37072 is now extinct, but I think there is a 37 in preservation with split headcode boxes on one end only.
Yes, 37075 is boxless on one end.

Edit: 37100 used to have the same appearance, but as 97301 it is now devoid of boxes on both ends.

Wasn't 37065 the same?

37116 used to have the old school "skirt" at one end only right into the 1990's and I seem to remember this was due to some kind of cab repair / replacement.

slightly off topic, and definitely in the “things I ought to know” category, but what was the issue with the skirts on the 37s?

Class 121 'bubble car' DMU 55033 was given a replacement cab roof without a headcode box at one end (giving it a similar appearance to a 122) but it retained its original one at the other:

On bubble-cars, the usual set up was exhaust pipes on one end and none on the other, but I read recently that one of the Chiltern ones (that lasted until fairly recently) had had the exhaust pipes moved to be internal, so had no pipes visible on either end.

37 075, in preservation has split boxes at one end and refurbished style marker lights with no headcode boxes at the other end.
It's strange that all of the range 6772 to 6775 are different to their original style.
6773 and 6774 received full rebuilds to centre headcode in the late 60s/ early 70s and 37 072 37 075 both lost there split boxes at one end some time later in their lives

Wasn't there a 31 that had a headcode box one end and discs the other? Can't remember which one.
