Can't say that I am too fussed with 232s. MLWs, 071s. 664s - all good but the loudest diesels in Europe has to be the CP classes 1901 and 1931, the only thing that I have ever had to close the window on when travelling behind (going up Rodao bank)

To the doubting Thomas' on this thread, you really need to see any of these locos in the flesh, a recording never really does any of them justice.

The loudest loco I've personally heard is 37906, through Foley Park tunnel on the SVR. With the brakes slightly applied and both back cab doors open, I got the best deafening experience of my life. It will stay with me alongside standing at Blackwell aged 4 to hear me only mainline Deltic blast the Lickey on a fairwell tour. Magic moments!

They are very loud indeed - the only trouble with those is that they used to run on aircon expresses, so you couldnt really get to hear the thrash, unless you were fortunate to pick one up on a commuter out of Barreiro. I don't know if any still exist do they? I havn't been to Portugal since about 1996.

The loudest loco I've ever been behind was A-468 in Greece back in 1997 ... the noise that thing made leaving Athens on the overnight to Thessaloniki on load sixteen was just unbeleivable. I think that's the only time a loco has actually made me shivver from goosebumps :D

The Czech class 751 was also a favourite of mine.

The 1931s also used to work the Barreiro to Faro and the Lisbon to Covilhã IRs from Entroncamento or Abrantes, always fresh air stock :D
They are still around, though the only passenger work they have now is a couple of ICs between Castelo Branco and Covilhã and the "Lusitania" sleeper between Entroncamento and Marvaõ. The freight sector still use 1901s, though quite a few of both types are stored and some 1931s have gone to Argentina .

The Irish Rail/Northern Ireland Railways 201 class GMs produce an enormous amount of unpleasant sounding racket when standing still in stations while working the Belfast > Dublin service. It's certainly louder as anything I've heard, even a pair of 37s under load. They don't do this when on the Cork line, so I assume it's something to do with having to provide ETH (or 'head end power' as they call it). The Cork line sets have a genny van.

Quite right, the best turns for the 1901s are the Neves Corvo pyrites turns, especially the climb out of the mine terminal itself and either side of Canal Caveira.

As for the comment about Rodão bank, that would be 1935 on the PTG tour a couple of years ago - thrash away from Mosteiro over the viaducts, 500m from the tunnel power off, brake a little, then blast on the horn and full wide open through the tunnel - entered at 30kmh exited at 80kmh... How do I know?! Same story with 1913 on last year's PTG tour returning from the Algarve - slow for Pragal station on a yellow, which then turns to green, but no problem, let it roll slowly up to the signal on the curve before the tunnel so speed down to around 20kmh, then full wide through the tunnel with a pure wall of sound before bursting out on to Ponte 25 de Abril doing 85kmh with the Convel singing away as over the limit... Text received from back in the train said 'Not bad...' Never seen a clipt of that section, but I doubt if any microphones would have coped.
