It'll certainly be interesting to see if all this causes a 143 extension again
Yes, I did hear a while ago that they would have enough units by December to all two 3 car 165s to move West to be used on EXM <> PGN but now it seems that may not be the case. I have heard some rumours of the 143s being be extended for an additional 3 months into 2021 but there is nothing official on the Government's website as of yet.

The 143’s are not getting extended. If the extra HST units or the Turbos freed by the 769’s don’t appear in time, that’s tough. GWR need two more HST sets or 2 x 3 car Turbos in diagram to cover off the 143 sets retained because the 150/0 were sent away. The DfT are adamant about this.

The extent of longer term use of Turbos in the Exeter area depends on how many extra trains in the West area get introduced in 2021. The more extra Turbos absorbed in workings around Bristol, the less for Exeter.

Thank you very much, this tidies this all up for me now as it makes much more sense :)

But also can I also ask, I did hear that there is now one class 166 booked diagram on BNP <> SJP at weekends, is this true?

Thanks.

166211 is working Barnstaple - St James Park diagram today.

166215 is working Exeter - Bristol.

Can I ask how long they have been doing services out of Exeter for?

This Barnstaple is a new one and have been working Exeter to Bristol on Sunday mornings since December. There was one worked from Bristol and stayed overnight then worked back during High Summer 2018

Yes, like PHILIPE says the Barnstaple one is a new diagram booked for a class 166, was due to start last weekend but has happened this weekend instead and the Exeter to Bristol one has been happening for a while now but over the summer it seemed as if a Castle Set was running it for a little while.

No matter what people might think of the Turbos, this is a positive move for passengers regularly using the Barnstaple services - it's worth remembering that a 3-car 166 has around 55 more seats than a 3-car 158. Also, better door layout which is handy at peak times!

Not really, turbos are much better suited to Bristol Commuter services.

Barnstaple isn't that far

With the exception of Severn Beach and Weston/Filton, the other services they are used on in the Bristol area are comparable in length and mileage to the Barnstaple line.

Just out of curiosity, are all the GWR services to and from Barnstaple due to be diagrammed for Turbos or is it just a few? Either way, that's 2 or 3 extra 158's freed up :)!

Freed up for what? Barnstaple line was something they were “freed up” for in the first place! There are no more booked 150s to Penzance to replace.

Just one on a Saturday and Sunday as shown in Post #705. I'm not sure if there are any long term plans or not.

Granted this may have changed in the last 6 months that I haven't been using the local services as much, but certainly when I did used to trravel regularly between Bristol, Keynsham and Bath (on weekdays and weekdays), short formations of Turbo services was a regular issue. Has this been solved yet? If not I am a little hesitant to be happy about units being used elsewhere too!

However, my concerns about local Bristol services aside, what a change the Tarka line has had recently. Back when I used to regularly travel on it, a 2 car pacer was your usual and you'd be lucky if you got a 150! Now regular 158's and some Turbo services.

I would have thought that the Turbos would have been better on Paignton-Exmouth rather than Barnstaple. The door configuration seems wasted on a route where basically everyone gets on and off at the first and last stop, ideal 158 territory - the Paignton stopper with frequent stops at fairly large stations sounds ideal for it, and could allow a direct replacement of a pacer or two.

There will be some on the Paignton to Exmouths when the 769s are in service at Reading thus releasing them from there. They are only working on the Barnstaples over the weekend and is possibly not a long term move.

So do we know if it will be all turbos on Exmouth-Paigntons or some 158s as well?

No, the 143 units are going, whether any 769's enter service or not. The extra GTi sets will help fill the gap with one due before Xmas.

Should be 5 double 150 diagrams and two 16x diagrams eventually but like Clarence Yard says, the 143s are going at the end of the year so if there isn't sufficient stock at that point then there will be short forms until other stock becomes available

Yes and recently there seems to have been more than 4 out per day but this is probably better to be talked about in this thread:

Saw a turbo at Abbotswood Junction heading south from Worcester about 1305 yesterday. Have these replaced 158s on Malvern to Weymouth via Gloucester services?

Exactly. The vast majority of passengers travel the full length of the route from Barnstaple - Exeter. There are very few passengers getting on and off at intermediate stations most of the time so unlikely to be many dwell issues for 158s.

Paignton - Exmouth sees much higher turnover at numerous stations on both sides of the Exe Estuary, not just Exeter, so Turbos would be far better suited on this line.
