From my experience, and taking a balanced view, it's a mixed picture. I wouldn't say they're crap and there are some extenuating circumstances.

First of all, you have a county council that will argue that they have little money to spend on supporting services. Many supported journeys were axed a few years ago so many routes no longer exist or journeys stop in the early evening. To be fair to BoS, they have tried to keep some going commercially. However, it is difficult operating territory and is sparsely populated in much of the county. The Taunton Park and Ride was under threat but the local district council and BoS came up with a deal to keep it going and they have sought to market it much more effectively. The poor territory and economics are reflected in headways that have also been expanded so services like Taunton to Yeovil or Yeovil to Wells have gone from hourly to every 90 mins. Even some local services that were quite frequent in Bridgwater or Taunton are now much less so. Again, that does reflect the decline in town centres like Yeovil and Bridgwater. Walk on fares tend to be high (impact of ENCTS remuneration?) and even the day ticket is quite heavy though there are better value options for regular travellers.

Publicity is a mixed bag. It was very good a few years ago and the timetable book remains excellent. Promotion on vehicles is generally poor though. The website can often be sporadic in terms of information though their social media is a little better. Roadside publicity can be patchy though. In addition, bus stop flags have been replaced in many areas around Taunton and the main route to Bridgwater but once you leave those areas, they are still faded, grubby First. This is particularly noticeable around Yeovil which was transferred in 2016 where aside from four e200s transferred up from Cornwall where the livery is amended (as both Kernow and BoS now share a green base livery), you would think that it was still a First operation. The signage on the depot and bus station (admittedly, both are likely to be redeveloped but not for a few years) is resolutely First apart from a few bus stop flags in the bus station.

The fleet tends to rely on cascades from other OpCos and again, that does reflect the challenges of the area; I think the last actual new vehicles were in 2008/2009. They do have some newer fleet, having been cascaded in from places like Southampton and Glasgow or being purchased from dealers. However, the average age is still quite high. Some of the fleet has creditably been refurbished such as the 10 year old e300s. However, there are many vehicles running around in First urban livery and have done so despite being transferred in for some time, and it's not as if they are elderly vehicles that are running for a few months before disposal. In Yeovil, one Dart has been running around with Solent fleetnames for 18 months.

I've made some of these points before (and been challenged about them). They're not crap but it's not Cornwall; the territory is tougher, the council less supportive, and the results from First reflect that.

Living in Sussex, my main local operators are Brighton & Hove/Metrobus, but I also use some of the smaller operators quite often, like The Big Lemon and Compass Travel, as well as Stagecoach (infrequently).

B&H are fantastic, vehicles/liveries are spotless externally, sometimes interiors can be a bit untidy, but lack of bins/full buses no doubt contribute to this. Smartphone ticketing or contactless tap on/off, seems rare for anyone to pay by cash now. Brilliant travel shop (1 Stop Travel) where you can sort enquiries, lost property, NatEx tickets, as well as National Rail. Drivers generally friendly bunch, run punctually, connect with trains by diverting to the station in the early hours (for shift workers) to save an uphill walk. Bit pricey for short journeys, but excellent value travelling further afield. Very frequent on main routes (every 3 mins through Kemptown/Hove), all night service on some routes. Bus Times book showing all operators routes and times in the city is a fantastic piece of marketing, reminds me of the Milton Keynes Council timetable book which was also very good.

Metrobus aren't as frequent, decent vehicles, no so good on frequency, but good coverage (some routes 24/7 or 3am-midnight), again same smartphone app or contactless tap on/off, again drivers friendly. Seem even pricier than Brighton & Hove for local trips, again further you travel, better the value. Good attempts at marketing/promoting the bus.

The Big Lemon are fantastic, brilliant drivers, punctual and if you get a decent bus, perfect journey. Shame they don't serve more areas, often quicker than B&H services as less people use them and use quieter roads through Kemp Town. Tickets integrated with Brighton & Hove, Compass, etc.

Compass Travel (or CityBuzz) same as The Big Lemon, spot on service, no complaints whatsoever. Tickets integrated with Brighton & Hove, Big Lemon, etc.

Stagecoach, always immaculate, generally friendly drivers, but show them anything other than their own tickets and it becomes an interrogation(!). Sometimes timekeeping issues, but they can't help the Coast Road/London Road traffic problems.

I’ve got 3 operators on my doorstep but one of those could be reviewed in two parts.

McGill’s is the dominant operator with the 901/906 operated from Greenock depot on a combined 15 minutes, with 4 year old Citaros that are very well turned out and clean. Drivers are decent (they have branded face masks now) and although the length of the route and traffic disruption can affect reliability, generally they are fine. Evening services drop off a cliff however, with Stratas taking over and one of the closest towns, Gourock (with ferry links) no longer served in the evening, and they are expensive.

The other McGills route is an hourly operation from Johnstone depot and it’s operated by 13 year old Citaros and Eclipse B7RLEs. Not as clean, pretty scruffy on the outside, I’ve seen a fair few busted buses waiting to be rescued and one blazing Citaro on that route. Also the one time that I’ve absolutely had to rely on it, it didn’t turn up and McGills ignored my tweet.

McGills overall 6/10.

The other major operator is Stagecoach West Scotland, who operate every 30 minutes with Scania E300s. They recently curtailed their 585 Ayr to Greenock to terminate in Largs, so lopping off about a third of the route. McGills took the bulk of the passengers between Largs and Greenock anyway but no through service from further south has been a contentious move. They’re generally very reliable, very well turned out, decent value and their drivers are pretty chipper. It continues on into the very late evening on a subsidy, which also takes over most of the local route operated by Shuttle Buses during the day.

Stagecoach West Scotland 8/10.

And finally there’s Shuttle Buses who operate the local town service every 30 minutes like clockwork with a new Strata or occasionally subbed by an 12 year old but spotless Solo SE. Gillian, the regular driver, is a popular figure round town and “the wee bus” penetrates deep into the tight streets and is great value for money if you buy a day ticket.

Shuttle Buses 10/10.

I've not been on GNE during the Gilbert era so would be interested to see.

Just feels more consistent to me - new liveries they’re rolling out are a class above, as is the implementation (inside and out - cove panels all treated etc). Feels much more like the level of attention to detail in the Huntley era. Elements like rebranding Venture alongside all the new deckers at Consett make a lot of sense and increase the impact of the investment they’re making up there (and in an area where the new Tory MP wants a rail link...)

There have been some media-savvy stunts - using the Routemaster as a dupe on the 21 was very smart and showed how they were pulling out all the stops.

Only note of caution I’d say is the impact of Covid. This seems to be increasing the drive towards inter working etc that has resulted in some routes being de-branded, and frequencies reduced on some of the non-hero/Newcastle routes. As per Stagecoach, their Sunderland network (such as it is) suffers from a weak city centre core and much of the employment (Nissan, Doxford Park) being peripheral.

All this is pre-February, when I moved here, and God knows what Covid has done.

I've not been on GNE during the Gilbert era so would be interested to see.

It's improved. Carr's era was perfectly adequate, but it's getting back to how it was under Huntley. Smart presentation and smart promotion. Heaven knows it gets paid for though, GNE fares are eye-wateringly expensive compared to Arriva and Stagecoach.

Northumberland (NMS) is still better than most of the NE firm but I've not been up for a while. In Durham (United), the operations are sort of ok in Durham depot but Darlington is a bit flaky. Stockton and Redcar (Tees) is far rougher!! Overall, it's very average and getting worse.

Northumberland is hit and miss. The flagship routes are decent enough, although the ALX400s on the Morpeth MAX routes are really showing their age and some of the allocations out of Blyth are interesting. But away from the MAX and Sapphire routes it's a mixed bag, even the likes of the 43/44/45 with the ex-X21 Sapphire E400s feel down at heel.

Durham is very middling, I'd say no better than Darlington. The ex-London E200s on the Durham city routes are grim.

The whole lot needs some investment, clearly the 05 and 06 Geminis and ALX400s were refreshed (certainly not refurbished!) to MAX as a stopgap that, five years on, really feels tired.

So, for my local bus companies:

9/10 for Metrobus (Crawley)
8/10 for Sussex Coaches
7/10 for Compass Bus, Arriva Guildford & West Surrey and Stagecoach in the South Downs

So, for my local bus companies:

9/10 for Metrobus (Crawley)
8/10 for Sussex Coaches
7/10 for Compass Bus, Arriva Guildford & West Surrey and Stagecoach in the South Downs

Reasons for that are as follows:

Metrobus 9/10: Fantastic buses with great livery, generally friendly drivers and great frequency. I love the fact that some routes run 24/7 too! And tickets can integrate with Brighton & Hove and other bus companies around my area! Very well maintained and clean buses too!

Sussex Coaches 8/10. Like with Metrobus, livery is great and drivers generally are friendly too. Also I love the fact they run Citaros (which are fantastic to travel on) and not bog standard Enviro200s or Streetlites (ok they're both acceptable and quite nice but nothing can beat a Citaro). Being a small company, I think they have great potential to take over many rural routes around Sussex! Only issue is that they don't take contactless payments.

Arriva Guildford & West Surrey 7/10: Nice livery with friendly drivers and comfortable seats, but some of their older buses can be very slow and knackered (especially their ex London 07 reg Enviro200s that run on the 63 Horsham to Guildford)

Stagecoach in the South Downs 7/10: Stagecoach do have friendly drivers, clean buses and good maintenance, but their old livery doesn't appeal to me much. And it gets boring only seeing Enviro300s on my local route, the 17 from Horsham to Brighton.

Compass Bus 7/10. My least favourite of my locals. Whilst they do have friendly drivers, and their maintenance is alright, they have a very boring and basic livery, with bog standard, rattly Enviro200s (whilst I don't mind E200s in general the ones at Compass Bus are actually quite bad and extremely rattly). Maybe just the fact they're destroying all the variety of local bus companies that used to run many routes that Compass now operate - such as 125 that used to be Seaford & District which had a great livery. But of course there's nothing we can do about it when bus companies go bankrupt or the bus companies themselves simply don't want to run it anymore or lose the contract etc. and we should just move on. Still, it's getting very boring to see many of the rural Sussex routes now run by an operator that has a very boring and basic livery.

Transdev - 8/10. Clean buses, often refurbished to a very high standard. Very responsive and listen to customers. Twitter accounts are generally active from the first bus leaving the depot, to the last bus returning.

First Leeds - 3/10. A lot of potential, commonly ruined by dirty buses that haven't seen a refurb in 10/15 years, new buses but the quality is very poor; unbearable next stop announcements, boring interiors etc... Moronic route planning and timetabling from local experience, timing services to run 5 minutes after their main competitor for example. Buses commonly not showing up and the twitter account not giving any service updates. If you are travelling outside of the relatively short twitter hours; you stand no chance of finding out.

First Huddersfax/ Bradford. - 7/10 Good operation, typically running to time, clean buses and generally nicer drivers.

Lol, any bus route using Lewes or London roads will get very late, especially in the evenings. Traffic, you know.

I would agree with you that Brighton & Hove are also a fantastic bus company, but the reason why I didn't state it in my post is because B&H don't run any routes that go to Horsham (where I live).

Big Lemon does have good routes, but I'm sorry, the maintenance is of the worst in Sussex in my opinion. Their ex Abellio London Enviro200s can't even climb a hill and are just so knackered to go on. Thankfully The Big Lemon have now withdrawn these.

P.S. Another bus company I forgot to add is Southern Transit, since they run route 3 to the town where I live. I would give them 8/10. Whilst their livery is alright, they have friendly drivers and maintenance is also good! I just wish the 3 ran on Mondays to Fridays and not just Thursdays.

Vehicles: somewhat hampered by 30 of the newest buses being away on loan, but generally clean and presentable with low accident damage. Repaints take place at a snails pace.

With a fleet of 230 ish that’s the equivalent of a repaint every three and a half years!

The only thing that let them down for me was their handling of the timetable reintroduction during the summer. Bringing back the tour buses and more frequent Airport buses before earlier morning buses meaning instead of getting the bus I had to get a taxi to work as the first bus couldn't get me to town in time.

Nothing to shout about. It's really not that great for an operator that decides to have so many different brands. I love the brands, but they're sometimes not backed up with the physical image.

First South Yorkshire - 7/10. Buses are a bit tatty, but are usually on time, great staff. Would be 8, but they are putting empty deckers on school routes, and single deckers on service routes that are used by children at the moment. Hope they sort it next week.

Stagecoach East Midlands - 9/10. Clean buses and punctual.

Powells - 7/10. Again, some tatty vehicles and strange vehicle allocations, but very good staff.

To be fair, they have had a load of Geminis arrive to wipe out the majority of the Tridents and with Covid both reducing throughout AND then a much increased PVR because of additional social distancing requirements, then they can be cut a bit of slack.

The External paint shop in Bodmin Has one booth. It takes around 5 days to do one bus. He’s giving staff overtime and going to 7 day operation Working longer hours To meet the 2 buses a week. With the extra pvr requirements (currently higher than pre TFC take over of the tenders) and the decker fleet stretched to the max there is no way to get it done any quicker especially considering the number of extra vehicles bought to Cornwall in last 6 months

I'm talking about "normal" times rather than the difficulties of the current situation. It varies from operator to operator, but some Stagecoach companies manage a complete fleet repaint every five years or so.

Yes, I understand that. It's obviously the capacity of the chosen paintshop which dictates the rate.

Even without Covid, you’d still have the large number of recently arrived Geminis.

What FK were intending to do regarding frequency of repaints, we don’t know but I’d suggest that you’d have a fairly regular cycle of elderly deckers arriving for college and schools from elsewhere within the group with a lifespan of 4-5 years. The more modern fleet will be subject to repaints in line with new fleet intakes (e.g. when the U lines or Tinners are due for replacement).

FK are certainly one of the better First OpCos and are sorting out the presentation issue having cleared most of the tat away (which wasn’t worth painting though obviously more tat has now arrived and, in some Tridents, returned).

The variations in speed of repaints is apparent in First, Stagecoach and Arriva. Stagecoach Midlands and Arriva North East are slow to repaint whilst ironically, Stagecoach NE and Arriva Midlands are some of the quicker firms.

First Glasgow.

Lived on 31 route but First pulled the route, leaves me a good walk up to half an hour to get to a bus stop for the 6 or railway station . Not looking forward to when i use it to work or it rains.

The 31 was quite realiable at every half hour/hourly. The 6 is every 12 mins but there can be large gaps and takes longer.

Buses on 31 were oldest in fleet.
31 was pulled for one good reason it didn't get used belive me as a stay near the route and used to use it

Talking of which First Manchester managed to eliminate barbie livery in about 4-5 years. Not that I'm saying First Manchester is in any way a good operator of course!

I stay on the withdrawn section. Yes it wasnt busy but it was used well at peaks. Getting to Glasgow now involves a lengthy walk to bus or railway station.

As above it will take at the current rate 3 1/2 years to repaint the entire fleet eliminating the old liveries (and giving a fresh coat to everything already done). All of which not in current liveryare vehicles that have arrived in the last few months so hardly the fault of FSW they aren’t in current liveries.
Not forgetting the permanent additions from Ensign are arriving painted as well

Indeed. There is one elderly Solo (53801).

Suggest that it’s future might have been linked to the tenders and resultant fall out. Wouldn’t expect it to last much longer and remember that repainted Solos (53406/53803) were disposed of.
I assume it may have been planned to be the fourth Mousehole-branded bus for the still-born 4bph summer service.

And, if I'm not mistaken (which is highly poss) was on the service in the last few days, or was it a figment of my imagination?

Stagecoach Manchester:

Drivers: variable driving standards, generally quite a friendly bunch.
Vehicles: regularly repainted and retrimmed, let down by poor interior cleanliness.
Service quality: mixed. High frequency routes such as the 192 quite often have large gaps and bunching.
Fares: cheap!
Publicity: bus stop and leaflets are done by TfGM. On-line is via the awful Stagecoach website.

Very possibly and so may have been due for a paint job!

First South West can definitely be excused in many respects for their Kernow paint rate and I think they're a good 8/10. Certainly, better than Somerset but in my post above, there are some extenuating circumstances that can excuse some of the differences.

I'm a very harsh scorer so I think my 7/10 equates to your 8/10. :) I regard First Kernow as a good operator.
