I didn't even realize, there are still a few of the Dennis Sabre appliances running around so I thought they were still making them, I assume the bin lorries are made at a different site then
The bin lorries are built by Dennis Eagle which is a completely separate entity now, as far as I'm aware.

First Glasgow, McGill's and Xplore Dundee to get more electric buses:

ADL WELCOMES SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR 35 NEW ELECTRIC BUSES
Published: 25 Sep 2020
Alexander Dennis Limited (“ADL”), a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. (“NFI”), one of the world’s largest independent global bus manufacturers, today welcomed the Scottish Government’s announcement of the award of £7.4 million in funding to bus operators through the first round of the Scottish Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme.

The initiative helps bus companies invest in electric vehicles and associated infrastructure, supporting a green recovery out of the coronavirus pandemic, improving air quality and furthering Scotland’s ambitions for a net-zero economy.
Funding has been awarded following a competitive bidding process. Three of the winning proposals were made with ADL as the intended supplier and the company will now work with successful bidders First Glasgow, Xplore Dundee and McGill’s Buses to finalise contracts for these 35 zero-emission buses.
ADL President & Managing Director, Paul Davies commented: “As Britain’s leading manufacturer of clean buses, we welcome the Scottish Government’s award of funding for ultra-low emission buses, which will contribute to Scotland’s green recovery.
“This is a much appreciated first step in stimulating urgently needed demand for new buses and we look forward to building 35 electric buses here in Scotland. Delivering cleaner air and reducing carbon emissions, they will set a great example for further investment in a better future for all. At ADL, we have the capacity, skilled team and commitment to build the many more low, ultra low and zero emission buses which our nation needs now.”
ADL will manufacture the buses locally in Scotland, supporting skilled jobs and apprenticeships as well as its wider Scottish supply chain which will also benefit from Lothian Buses’ separate confirmation of its intent to continue with an order originally placed in 2019 for the purchase of 98 Euro 6 double deck buses which ADL will build in Falkirk on Volvo chassis.

first glasgow to get more electric buses

Great news for Glasgow! It’ll be interesting to see where FIG places these buses and what routes can accommodate electric buses. The M3 seems ideal but not sure of any other routes which would be suitable for them. Anyone know how well they fair on the M3? Are they decent buses?

There's nothing necessarily in the press release that suggests they will be single- or double-deck. Certainly, I'd perhaps expect BYD/ADL 'deckers for First Glasgow and Xplore Dundee, while McGills will be more likely to take BYD/ADL E200s (didn't they order a one-off Yutong earlier in the year?).

It would be nice to see more of the E400City design around Glasgow for a little variety.

Lothian also re-affirmed the order for 98 new vehicles, a combination of largely B8L Enviro400XLB's and some B5TL's and i believe B5LH's with the conventional Enviro400 bodywork. On top of that there's also the outstanding order for 4 Enviro400 bodied BYD's.

It's almost as if we want it to look like we're burning money...

Or, that Lothian is continuing to invest to keep a modern fleet (they have committed to being all Euro6, have they not?). Ensuring that manufacturers are still there to build buses for them probably also comes into it.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

It is still coming, next year.

Ah, thanks for confirming.

They commited to Euro 5 (E5) or better by end 2020 which was just sensible as the proposed ULEZ in Edinburgh whenever it does materialise proposed requiring heavy diesel (this includes buses) to be at Euro 6 (E6) or better.

So more new E6 to oust the older E5s and funding acquired for E5>E6 upgrades on the newer E5s.

The order is just keeping that all on track, in my opinion, and very sensible too so when ULEZ is announced they aren't in a scramble to get ready.

As posted in the First Aberdeen thread (although most will likely miss it due to the post merge feature...) the first of the new Hydrogen Powered Wright Streetdeck FCEVs for First Aberdeen have now been delivered.

I know it has been mentioned before, but it has been confirmed that Birmingham City Council has ordered 20 hydrogen double deckers from Wrightbus to be introduced by National Express West Midlands from April 2021.

Birmingham City Council has purchased 20 new hydrogen double decker buses as part of their Clean Air Hydrogen Bus Pilot.

The Clean Air Hydrogen Bus Pilot looks to ‘kick-start’ the hydrogen market as a viable zero-emission fuel with the procurement and deployment of 20 hydrogen buses in Birmingham. The buses, which are made by Wrightbus and are the world's first zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell double deckers, will be introduced with National Express West Midlands from April 2021.

It’s intended that pilot will be the catalyst for the next generation of hydrogen buses, hydrogen production and re-fuelling infrastructure development. The council have also collaborated with ITM, who will be producing and dispensing the hydrogen fuel from the new re-fuelling hub at Tyseley Energy Park.

Hydrogen buses consume four times less fuel in comparison to standard diesel buses, covering 300 miles on a single tank and with the ability to refuel within 7-10 minutes. They emit water vapour, meaning no carbon dioxide or other harmful gases are being pumped in to the air.

Hailed as another solution to tackling the city’s poor air quality and a key step towards achieving the council’s net zero carbon target, each bus is expected to save up to 79.3 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per annum.

Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Waseem Zaffar said: “I’m delighted that we will be introducing hydrogen buses to Birmingham next year. Fuel cell buses offer a practical solution for cities to decarbonise public transport and immediately improve air quality.

“It has taken us two years to get to a point where we can ensure commercial viability for this type of fuel cell technology and is great news for our city and the rest of the region.

“This pilot is a significant step towards our net zero carbon target and will provide Birmingham with a leading role in informing debate on supportive policies for zero emission public transport at a local and national level.”

The buses are being manufactured by Wrightbus, who are also supplying vehicles to Aberdeen and London as a first in the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell double decker buses in the UK and within Europe. The buses will be operated in Birmingham by National Express, with an ambition to run them on the new Sprint route when it opens.

Jo Bamford, Owner and Chairman of Wrightbus said: “We’re incredibly proud that these buses hold the title of being the world's first zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell double deckers, and we’re delighted that Birmingham City Council has recognised the benefits that this technology can bring to the city.

“We have an opportunity with hydrogen-powered transport to make a huge difference to air quality.

“But this fleet of buses represents much more than Birmingham striving to reach a clean air, zero-carbon future. It represents the start of what could be a world-leading UK hydrogen economy which will bring with it multi-million-pound investments and tens of thousands of jobs.”

Tom Stables, National Express UK Managing Director said: “National Express West Midlands announced earlier this year that our entire bus fleet will be zero-emission by 2030 and we are already operating 29 fully electric buses in Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry.

“By operating hydrogen double deckers in service in Birmingham, we will learn which routes lend themselves to hydrogen buses and what the mix of vehicles in our fleet should be going forward.

"These new buses will be fitted out in our top-spec Platinum range, so customers will also benefit from free Wi-Fi, USB chargers and extra legroom. Because there is no engine, they are super-quiet. And of course, all that comes out of the exhaust is water vapour."

The development will see the start of fuel cell technology supply chains within the region and will help to support a brand-new service and maintenance apprenticeship programme.

It has been funded through OLEV (Office for Low Emission Vehicles), GBSLEP (Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership), Birmingham City Council and JIVE project funding from the FCH JU (European Funding from the Fuel Cell Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) under grant agreement No 735582. The FCH JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research.

GBSLEP’s Deputy Chair for Delivery, Chris Loughran said: “The team at Birmingham City Council have demonstrated real determination in reaching this milestone in what has been a difficult climate.

“This will not only make an important contribution to improving air quality for those living and working in the city, but it further augments the region’s growing low carbon and energy technologies sector. The buses will make use of the low emission re-fuelling infrastructure at Tyseley Energy Park, which GBSLEP is also proud to have supported via our Local Growth Fund.

“Our investments reflect our commitment to tackling one of the largest challenges we collectively face and to growing the region’s energy sector, which has enormous potential to generate new jobs and bring investment to the area.”

Once launched, the Clean Air Hydrogen Bus Pilot will be monitored and reviewed to analyse and ensure the ongoing commercial and operational viability of hydrogen buses, to enable a continued roll out of hydrogen fuel cell technology within bus fleets, as part of the city’s commitment to the environment and cleaner air.

It will be a combination of dealer back up, price, full life operating costs. My experience from an HGV side of MAN s is they can be hit and miss with engine quality, some models are good some aren't so presume whatever chassis they sold over here had a poor engine, it is widely quoted that it was Engine problems that caused Stagecoach to look elsewhere.

The other point in our domestic manufacturers favour is the fact that we seem to have some quirky demands, namely double decker, right hand drive etc. To MAN and Mercedes the UK is a rounding error in the potential sales opportunity, add in the complexity of the market and you are never going to push hard.

Personally I think that it is great that the UK still has a domestic bus building industry and until recently all 3 major players were in UK ownership and with some good export orders and should be celebrated rather than knocked.
Couldn't agree more.

Trouble at t'mill for Optare?

So how many buses will Optare sell this year? Mind you, the article did include a picture of a number of Metrocities in build, but did not recognise the livery, but accept it may just be undercoat - any idea what they are, or was it just an archive photo?

Alexander Dennis Limited (“ADL”), a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. (“NFI”), one of the world’s largest independent global bus manufacturers, today announced that the first two Enviro500 buses have been unveiled by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (“BVG”), ahead of a new fleet of double deckers for the transport operator of Berlin, Germany.
Berlin’s new generation of iconic yellow double deck buses is the first to have been designed in Britain by ADL, the world’s leading supplier of double deck buses. Using its global expertise, the manufacturer has tailored the Alexander Dennis Enviro500 to the requirements of bus services in the German capital while maintaining its proven benefits, including a lightweight aluminium body construction that improves fuel economy without compromising on longevity.
