Yes it will be shorter trains but I find certainly in first class that the Nottingham HST's are mostly empty when I have used them.

Highly optimistic that 3 180's will be out but I'm sure EMR need to use them quite a bit once the HST's are gone and the Corby 360's are in service.

When they arrived the weren't in the best of states but they seem to be reliable now. It is still only 1 2+6 out at the moment but 2 Angel power cars are around a NL 2+8 set. There are still 1 power car and some coaches up at Barrow Hill but I think this is because there is not a lot of room at Etches Park atm with 4 180's and a 170 being stabled and being used on training.

But would that solve the issue though? Is just swapping the blue to red HST's just for PIS and a different disabled toilet or are there more items like handrails and the seats.

From my experience, first class carries fresh air whilst standard is 75-80% full.
I'm not convinced a single 180 has enough capacity to replace a full HST.
Maybe a 6 car HST though.

Re 1st class - more people on it than I expected when I used it last weekend (20 people but then that was reasonable as a proportion of a lightly loaded train overall, no doubt for covid reasons). Revenue protection was done too.

Weekdays it's low but poor availability of 1st Advance tickets seems to me to be the cause. last time I travelled I would have paid a bit more for 1st but that was not on offer (they wanted a lot more), so I was in standard and the money I would have spent stayed in my bank account, not EMRs!

In my experience 1st class carried more people during the latter years of the Stagecoach era than Abellio did up until March. Much of that I believe to be down to pricing structures, as it has been significantly more costly under Abellio. Hard to judge where we stand right now though.

It would have solved it a whole lot better (i.e. across all 9 sets) than bringing in only 4 sets that were months late because they were in such a shocking condition. Moot point, though, as the opportunity has long since gone.

Exactly my experience too.

It was still very pricey under Stagecoach, I don't think EMR have changed very much with the pricing.

Maybe they are releasing lower quotas. I would almost always pay for 1st Advance, now I find that I am put off by cost asked.

I wouldn't have said it was particularly pricey. Of the 9 single St Pancras-Nottingham (& v.v) trips I took in 2018, 4 of them were in first class and 3 of those first class fares were actually the cheapest of them all (at £13.55 and 2x £15.85 - all with railcard). The most expensive ticket was £23.10, only £2 more than the (half fare) of an off peak return

I'm still struggling to understand why, when it was the lack of compliancy with the coaches, we now see many Stagecoach liveried sets still in play, but only a few red sets. At the same time the blue power cars have all but been replaced with exLNER ones. Are the MTU so much better?

I think it is the carriages (red ones) are so much worse...

No the LNER carriages are in a poor state and require a lot of work.
The VP185s can't work with the red sets because of the different wiring, otherwise they would be kept as they are actually better than MTUs

The fact that other operators are taking the blue power cars in preference to the many MTUs available at Ely and Long Marston tells the story that the VP185 is better.

But the red power cars can work with the ‘white’ sets? Or, as I saw last week, one red power car and one white power car on a white set?

How does the wiring work for that?

The wiring can be changed between the sets, yes. Not a tricky job either.

VP185 definitely work with red sets. They just need a different connecting cable.

The sockets on the ends of some of the white sets (i.e. outer ends of the TGS and TF) have been changed to the LNER type. There are also a small number of converter cables that have one of each type of plug at each end.

In one case, Neville Hill were quite cunning to allow a red power car one end and a blue power car at the other end - they substituted the end TF (with the LNER socket at one end) with a spare white TF (with the standard socket type).

43274 is now in use with EMR in (almost) full red livery. Slightly disappointed it didn’t appear as 43074

It had the entire livery removed from the bodyside, as it was previously carrying the 'Spirit of Sunderland' livery. I think it still has the VTEC livery on the cab however

Apologies, I should have been more clear with where the red was.
Since the Neville Hill sticker machine is already hot, hows about we name that one ‘BBC East Midlands Today’.. seems appropriate.

Is it actually a straight through cable or are some conversion electronics involved? I believe the LNER ones have 27 wires - are the additional nine not needed?
