Should we go back into lockdown at this point?

Is it time for a second national lockdown?

In addition, what happened to the thought that the rule of 6 needed two weeks to see if it worked? They gave it 3 days. Why are the government behaving like impatient 5 year olds?
Because something must be done. This is something, so they must do it.

If we have an outbreak in my local pub, they will be looking for all of those, along with Lord Lucan, Micky Mouse and Elvis Presley, according to the names in the book!
The trouble is, it's now an offence to give false details as well.

Easiest thing is, don't go to pubs at all. They'll go bust. Not my problem.

Pretty grim news from The Mirror this morning. Reports Boris Johnson will address the nation to reveal plans of a WINTER lockdown. A senior government source saying "There’s not much on the cards to look forward to. The next six months’ll be pretty s***.”. Oh and Boris is going to be meeting Mr Doom and Gloom's themselves Vallance and Whitty today, which is not good.

I thought the proposed plan was only a TWO WEEK national lockdown, not a lockdown throughout autumn AND winter??!! If we have yet another lockdown that drags on for weeks and months again, this will be extremely damaging even further to the nation's economy and mental health!!! A 2 week national lockdown is more than long enough. We shouldn't be having another lockdown atall.

Boris Johnson to 'make TV address to nation with winter lockdown plans'

The Prime Minister is to reportedly meet medical experts this weekend on how the UK will tackle the second wave of Covid-19, with fresh curbs to be introduced which could see households banned from mixing

Boris Johnson will address the nation on TV this week to reveal plans of a winter lockdown, according to reports.

The Prime Minister could issue tougher lockdown restrictions for Brits for the rest of the year as the number of new coronavirus cases continues to rise.

New rules could see households banned from mixing, cutting opening hours at pubs and issuing tougher penalties for whose who flout them.

A senior government source told The Sun : "There’s not much on the cards to look forward to. The next six months’ll be pretty s***.”

A No10 source described reports about Mr Johnson making a TV address as speculation. The PM has however given TV addresses or press conferences when there are major rule changes in the past.

Medical advisors are said to be briefing Mr Johnson this weekend on what they would like to see happen to tackle the recent surge in cases.

It is claimed he could make his TV address on Tuesday, although this has not been confirmed.

A further 4,422 Covid-19 infections were recorded in the UK on Saturday, the highest daily increase since May 8.

The death count also increased by 27, reaching a tragic total of 41,759.

Chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance are set to meet the PM on Sunday to outline plans for what could happen if no tougher action is taken to control the virus.

It comes as new rules come into force that anyone who tests positive for coronavirus and even suspected carriers who ignore the two-week quarantine rule will be fined £1,000.

And the low-paid will get £500 so they can isolate at home.

That will rise to £10,000 for repeat offenders and cases of blatant non-compliance.

I see it’s to become law that you must self isolate it you have a positive test or get asked to by test and trace in England, with fines starting from £1,000 for breaches.

Yet another step backward towards authoritarianism :(
Sadly, idiots in Bolton or groups of teachers in Bacup have shown the scant regard that some have for rules designed to avoid larger lockdowns.

Yet locking down again seems to be the solution?, isn't this going to prolong what has happened first time round? So what was the point in having things opening back up? They may as well just shut the UK off for the whole year! You can't go doing this again, they must have another solution other than lock down (no expert here either).

Another 6 months hibernating, yes we all have lives to live let people get on with it.

I'm already on a waiting list (not exact mental health) but this is pushing the boat even further back....

Yet what did we do with colds/flus ... we carried on (I get the point that COVID isn't exactly that either but come on politicians get a grip on reality than being soft on one thing and on the other harsh, ie fining people - if its public health emergency then where is the money going for these fines?, more questions need to be asked especially on that part!)

A word of caution.... This is from the Mirror, Boris's most ardent opponent in the press.

I'd take it with a huge amount of caution.

Expect Piers on GMB tomorrow calling for another "lockdown" though.... No wonder people are questioning the media in a different spotlight, you would think its the media creating the narrative of whats happening...

Seriously??

I genuinely can’t believe what I’ve read in that article this morning. There is little to no justification for another lockdown at the moment given the numbers. The problems caused by a full winter lockdown would be shocking and frankly they would tower over the problems allowing Covid to spread, even without mitigation, would cause.

I would not stand for or comply with a full winter lockdown.

I truly don’t understand

Initially it was “we’ll turn the tide within 12 weeks” (in March)

Then it was “significant normality by November” (in July)

And finally now we’re getting some rules even harsher than the initial lockdown (mandatory isolation), a completely endless list of rules and restrictions, and the potential for a full winter lockdown.

If this was to go ahead, my mental health would plummet to such a point that I don’t know what I would do.

We really need the right wing papers to strongly criticise any lockdown proposals - which the telegraph in particular might. Johnson won't want them against him.

So many places shouldn't have been opened up, in such a short period of time. But people were demanding it, the government has no backbone, so they rushed everything open again without proper time to assess the impacts at each step. 'Everyone' galloped off on their 'must have' holidays, and trips to the pub, and to dine out on the cheap. Some people simply have no common sense, or self-control, or regard for themselves / other people. Now it looks like everyone, including those who folllowed the advice and managed some self-discipline will have to suffer, again. Everyone, think about your behaviour since 1 July, was each activity that you undertook really so absolutely, critically essential?

Not isolating if you test positive is a pretty despicable act. Though I believe you should receive 100% of salary if you can't work.
If ever government wanted to discourage people from going for a test, introduction of fines for not isolating would do it.
If government want to ensure compliance, they should, as you say, cover a person’s wages.
The consequences of fines will almost certainly lead to those with only mild symptoms not bothering with a test. No test = no legal requirement to isolate

Well, I've managed to go out and enjoy life whilst being responsible and socially distanced.

No, each activity I undertook wasn't "critically essential" . However it was essential to have a functioning economy. I have stuck within the guidelines and supported businesses that I value. I feel no shame in that.

Up in Scotland it wasn't exactly opening up at same time as down south we had an additional delays but saying that its not made much of a difference here either.

I do you use common sense on all my approaches but I guess its better just to stay indoors all year if that was the solution? Just go to the shops end of? I have just managed to get out of town for a few days than looking at the same place for past 6 months, and I haven't been to the gym yet but i'll guess may as well just scrap the rest of the year just for lockdown... lets just roll into 2021 now.

I am far from selfish (if anyone thinks that), I just want to get at least a bit of normality in my life do what I enjoy and enjoy it, I rarely go out let alone to the pubs, I enjoy travelling within the UK (but haven't been able to do that properly since March) and same with the gym but with winter rolling in, I guess with the gym (closed in theory) and no travelling outwith then thats my year buggered.

EDIT: just to add Scotland is still in phase 3, we ain't even got to phase 4 (compared to down south), in Scotland we got the added bolt ons... just for the sake of not sticking to the UK Government (I am far from impressed now by both Boris and Nicola either... its becoming a joke)

The problem is that the papers are including closing pubs down at 10pm (already happening in places) or a 2 week "circuit break" in the definition of a lock down.
What the government appears to be hinting at doesn't look like March lockdown repaeted.

Yes, people were demanding to get back to work to actually starting earning money to pay the bills instead of relying on handouts which they would have had to pay for eventually.

And as regards the hospitality industry, it will result in both a lot more false details (the police realistically won't have the time to follow these up, even if it is theoretically an offence), and a lot of people just avoiding going to such places. So what exactly was the point in spaffing a billion quid to allegedly support this industry, only to then shaft it again less than a month later?

It does seem that many don't understand this virus has to circulate through the population, keeping restrictions and locking down just prolongs it. It really isn't rocket science.

Excellent, if only enough people had done so. But no, twit from Bolton just had to go out on the lash, with all his mates, despite having just come back from holiday probably doing much the same whilst away. Or the Welsh nuggets, just why did they feel it so essential to jump on a coach and travel such a distance, without even going to the races when they got there? Are there no pubs in South Wales? Those celebrity cases are juts the tip of the iceberg. Get real folks, stay away from strangers. "Stranger Danger"(c) .

I don't mind if it was like that to an extent but I could see it up in Scotland with additional barriers, yet it seems the way the media are trying to push it is they rather have a March lockdown again..

None.

It was a gesture, it looks like it has back-fired spectacularly. Remember the name of the man that thought it up, for future reference.

Speed of circulation, and impact of that rapid uncontrolled circulation?

Is there a problem with the NHS being overwhelmed? Let the media print photos similar to those from Italy at the height of the outbreak? Then again I don't work in the NHS nor am I a politician relying on votes.

Firstly, let's account for tabloid fact distortion. Nobody has suggested a lockdown for the whole winter. In fact nobody has suggested a lockdown at all, even on the scale of March which wasn't actually a lockdown. The media are the ones making the hoo ha. What is that "senior government source" actually referring to? It's unlikely to be what'll be happening for the public, but more likely to be the atmosphere round Whitehall, what with this and Brexit. For those in government the next six months will be s**t. Boris is likely to come on the TV and issue a load of threats. "If you don't follow the rule of 6, we could take the action I'm about to outline". The whole thing has been mismanaged, but this is something he should have done ages ago, not relied on some hapless cabinet minister doing the rounds of the Sunday interviews.

Boris had initially floated a "Tier 2" lockdown for 2 weeks in England to coincide with the October half term.

This latest announcement (if true) is literally, the announcement of the grim reaper for the economy, leisure, hospitality and education sectors. And most of the non-emergency NHS sector will shut down to free up space for the "second wave of coronavirus patients" (given that hospitals were empty for the first wave). That will mean more essential surgery and treatments cancelled and more people dying of non covid-related conditions. The samaritans will be overwhelmed and problably, many will not even call them and just take matters into their own hands instead

I only hope this is the media-fuelled fear propaganda machine on overdrive and none of this ever happens.

I believe there was another protest at Trafalgar Square recently (yesterday?) and another one planned next weekend. I expect other protests too. However, few of these are actively being reported by the media - I wonder why... <D<D
