Dawlish to Exmouth

Does anybody know whether the train from Dawlish to Exmouth is direct - or is it necessary to change at Exeter? .Can’t seem to work it out from the timetable!

I just looked on The Trainline for Saturday and it shows 'No Changes' for journeys from Dawlish to Exmouth, so you should be OK.

Almost all are direct now & the frequency has been doubled to half hourly Monday-Saturday. Several are now non-stop Dawlish to St.Davids but then have a bit of a layover before climbing up to Central & beyond.

Most trains are also now formed of 4 cars (usually a class 150+143 or 2x150 combination) which is a big improvement in capacity. By the way, piccadilly, the train will reverse direction at Exeter St. David's; don't be worried if you appear to be heading back out the way you've come in!

Yes there is always a disability friendly unit in the formation. So many staycations that many of the trains I used over the week I was that way last month struggled to offer any sort of social distancing.

Depending on your view of steep hills you might consider going as far as Dawlish Warren rather than Dawlish proper.

We cycled from Exmouth to Dawlish Warren and initially decided to catch the train back to Exmouth.

In the end we cycled back to Starcross and boarded the ferry to Exmouth.

It was a fantastic day - now I know the train goes to Paignton - we plan to travel from Exmouth to Paignton and then cycle to Starcross and again back on the ferry.

Thank you for the advice re the train reversing at St David’s - saves us panicking!

One thing I should mention is that we couldn’t find a place to buy a train ticket at Dawlish Warren - a lady on the platform informed us that we could buy the ticket on the train - is this usual? - or could we be fined for travelling without a ticket? Could not find a ticket machine at Dawlish Warren.

If there are no facilities to purchase a ticket at your origin station, you should purchase one at your first opportunity to do so i.e on a train or at your destination

I can't say I've seen an automatic ticket machine at the Warren. Unfortunately conductors aren't passing through trains at the moment on most train companies either.

If a conductor does walk through the train, and I haven't got a ticket, but of course, offer to buy one,or arrive at my destination station and try to buy a ticket is this acceptable? - or am I deemed to be travelling without a ticket?

My plan was to try and speak to the guard when the train arrived at Dawlish Warren.

I travelled on the Exmouth to Paignton 4 times last weekend, 4 different conductors and had my tickets checked each time.
This was the first time I have seen a ticket check since the pandemic started.

Not normally (if you are open and honest) - you are trying to pay at the earliest opportunity.

On one occasion, some months ago, I asked the guard at Newton Abbot whether I could board the train at Newton Abbot without a ticket and pay him on the train.

He said that he "didn't have a ticket machine" - but it was OK to pay at Exeter St Davids my destination station.

On arriving at Exeter - I went straight to the ticket office to pay - they let me do it eventually but after a lot of questions.

Often cycling, I have a list of the various stations along the way just in case I struggle and don't make my destination! - the stations are often unmanned - and without a ticket machine - so I am just trying to confirm the process.

There's no TVM at Dawlish Warren but theres usually a seasonal member of staff (cover permitting) based in a hut on the down platform for part of the day
