Was there yesterday, that’s correct you still need a valid ticket I’m afraid (although there are some cheap tickets, and nobody actually checks if you use it or not)

Thanks for the advice, I may just give it a try tomorrow. Would you say there is any time limit on how long they would allow you to stay at a platform end?
I don’t imagine so, as you could have an advance for a much later train, I was there for about 2.5 hours between my trains yesterday. I shall keep an eye out when I pass through it again tonight though.

If you (can) buy a platform ticket then presumably you purchased the right to be there.

I would of thought that if you have a valid ticket it is no one else's business when you use it or if you chose not to use it.
Couldnt they just ask if they are trainspotting?

Staff member on the entrance checking tickets, you MUST have a valid ticket to enter the station, however as I said just purchase a cheap one (Gretna/Lockerbie/penrith/Wetherall/dalston/armathwaite) and choose whether you want to use it or not (why not spot in 2 locations for variety?)
Other than that, no staff question why you’re there (in my experience/observations). I would recommend for spotting the wee area down between Platforms 3/1 and just behind platform 2 (there’s plenty of space). You will need to stay masked as there are BTP on the station as well as staff.

Well I went yesterday (25th). I know you know this but for the benefit of others, the station has a one way system. You enter past the ticket offices and temporary metal barriers guide you onto the main platform (4) where a member of staff checks you have a valid ticket. Once through there are several one way areas depending on where you want to go. Although I didn’t go during ‘rush hour’ the station is still has a lot less passengers so social distancing was not an issue. I stayed for 2 hours and staff seemed more than happy me being there, and there were at least 4 other enthusiasts at various points. The toilets were open, and all concessions where closed expect the mobile coffee van who was also selling biscuits, otherwise you would need to bring your own food and drink in.
