West Midlands Ranger Where To Go

Having just found out about Ranger tickets I am planning a little tour next weekend to get a few photo's,my initial plan is to start at Stourbridge then do Crewe,Stoke,Lichfield Trent Valley,Birmingham New Street/Moor Street then back to Stourbridge.

Anybody got any better suggestions

start at stourbridge,go to smethick galton bridge,up to crewe,down to stoke,down the trent valley,get off at lichfield,into birmingham new street,down to coventry,through bedworth to nuneaton,back into new street,down to droitwich,then up to stourbridge?

It's a shame there is no HoE day ranger. If you're doing both days then the three day Heart Of England rover is still good value at about £65. The problem with WMDR is the southern lines radiate outwards from Brum but you pretty much have to go back inwards to get to other lines; at least with HoE rover you can connect Oxford with Worcester / Hereford, up the Marches to Crewe, so you can do a circular route if you like. Meh, still plenty of time in the day to do WMDR though.

Depends on what you're planning on seeing, personally I like to do the 'tourist' thing as well as see trains, so I'd probably continue to Stratford then Leamington, have a wander / drink in Brum, possibly take the Cannock Chase line up to Rugeley connect for Crewe. Guess it depends on what traction you want to see also!?

Actually it's still much cheaper to buy two WMDRs if you're not bothered about Oxford. I also quite like Malvern for scenery & Shrewsbury has an 'old railway' feel about it.

I have done this ticket however i stated at cewe. now i suggest you see the tanks at tamworrth HL then hang around at birmingham for the pretendolino times at bottom then go to rgby for 3 different frieghts or go to coventry at about 1/2o'clock because there ar the wrexham & shropshire 67's go either way at about those times also at bescot another wrexham and shropshire goes past later on but also for the yard there can be anything in there but also if you also have the time i suggest a run up to stafford for about 5 o'clock (only midweek when this happens) because for an hour or two when there is a rush of freight and a run up to crewe give you basford hall and crewe carridge but also if you can get to birmingham for the following times mon-thur 14:50,18:50 to london and 08:50, 12:30 to london, and for the 1P05 18:46 to preston (due to arrive at crewe at 21:01 but is 5 minutes early normaly) as these services will be the pretendolino and back down to wherever you want after that.

You can buy them on the day, not sure if you can get them in advance though.

Buy on the day, M-F you cant buy before 0845
I quite often do these and my usual move consists of doing wrexham skips

No, nor does it apply on Sundays or Bank Holidays.

Maybe it's the staff making you wait? I've always managed to get rovers before 9, weekdays

Edit: I know, it's because I paid at 08:45.

I bought a different day ranger today at 8:43. So it obviously is possible, maybe it is the staff making you wait? :/

I've read Yorkie's comments in this months Railtalk Magazine and he says that even if the ticket is valid after 0845 (for example), you can still be sold it earlier otherwise you may miss your 0846 train
