One of those random thoughts.

What was the last thing built under British Rail? or at least ordered by them.

Loco, Carriages or multiple units etc.

365541 must have been one of the final trains in which BR had a hand, though from memory I think it entered service under Prism’s tenure of the WAGN franchise.

Built by BREL before BREL was privatised. Classes 319 and 442.

Ordered I think Class 365

I would of thought the Networkers as sectorisation were still under BR. Alongside the class 159. 1992-95

BREL was privatised in 1989 based on what I've found - does anyone know the exact date? Class 90s would have been the final BR-built locomotives.

Thanks!

So, it looks like 91010 was the last loco built by BR, albeit as sub-contractor for GEC, who had a contract from BR for them(!), as it was outshopped from Crewe 8 April 1989. 90029 was released from works two days before.

And then all hell kicked off. GEC were trying to buy BREL which is really why they were sub-contracted, but it went to a consortium of Trafalgar House, ABB and management (40/40/20). GEC Transportation merged with Alsthom and bought out Metro-Cammell pretty much immediately thereafter.

I think before they adopted their current identity, the name "GEC-Alsthom" was used for a while? I can't help feeling I've seen some stock branded like that, though I can't think what.

The GEC and Alsthom tie-up was a 50:50 joint venture for many years and didn't become fully French owned until it floated on the Paris stock market in 1998 (and was renamed Alstom), at which point GEC sold its stake.

96 tube stock or E* 373 stock
Some of the underframe equipment cases for the Onix traction system on the Juniper stock (early part of the 458 build for sure) still carry GEC-Alsthom branding.

There are French TGVs running around with GEC Alsthom branding from the 1989-1998 JV period.
There will be several power stations around the world with GEC Alsthom power equipment, including some nuclear stations.
The power generation side of the business was sold by Alstom to US GE in 2015.

Forgive me, but where are you seeing that? It doesn't tally with my memory of the time, as I recall that the first ten were built as a batch and used for testing, training and mileage accumulation, and then there was a pause due to the lack of Mk4 stock with the remaining 21 coming a little later.

I think the point 43096 is making is that the second batch were built after BREL was privatised and therefore not 'built by BR'. That said, as BREL was a separate legal entity from 1969, one could claim that the first lot weren't built by BR either!
