How could the proposed Hoo/Sharnal Street station be served?

I advocate good travel for all, and that means balancing everyone off against each other for a greater good. Does a bit of shopping at Belvedere or new homes at Erith decide where the Sharnal Street train should go? They're not going shopping in Belvedere. They've got Bluewater and Medway on their doorstep!:lol:

But, most importantly, I have no doubt you'd love direct trains from Woolwich to everywhere but it's not viable.

Woolwich already has trains practically most parts of London....with CrossRail coming soon it’ll be even open up more parts, this isn’t about Woolwich this is about Hoo/Sharnal Street Station which will open in the mid 2020s hopefully.

And when talking of Sharnal Street, it's not necessarily the best thing to just run some sort of knackered Networker to Abbey Wood and Woolwich because of a bit of shopping in Belvedere of all places...

There’s an interesting YouTube video regarding the old branch line to Grain, with old footage from the 1950s, very interesting what Southern Region tried to do with Allhallows on Sea, they wanted to make a new Southend for Kent, but it never really took off, could SR’s dreams be finally realised?

I’ll search for the video and share it on here if I can it’s very interesting learning about the history of former line, it was pretty much a shuttle from Gravesend to Allhallows

Well it would have been closer than Margate, Ramsgate and Whitstable, I am wondering with all the scope for development and the new Pleasure park planned for Swanscombe, whether there will be other opportunities for the Isle of Grain, wasn't it where Boris wanted to put his Airport?

NB: It could be worse than a "Knackered Networker" is could be one of the 508's that the used to use on the Medway Valley or the Sittingbourne-Sheerness routes, can't imagine sitting on one of them again.

Yes I believe it was around the Grain area that Boris wanted his Airport, thank god that never went through!

I believe there will be more opportunities for growth around that area, it’s close by a lot of Kentish hubs and Grain itself is very vast and spacious area.

I wonder will the name Sharnal Street be kept?

People going to British beaches.

I think that's a failure waiting to happen...

Will probably be renamed, to something gateway probably. I remember thinking how quickly some of these planes at the Boris Airport would have to climb to stop any issues with the Montgomery that is still off Sheerness, I don't think that will ever get lifted and be safe

If you believe it isn't safe of course...

A lot of new stations that serve developments are called Parkway as well, Hoo Parkway has a good ring to it

Well thankfully like a lot of his ideas they get binned quickly :)

Last I heard, there was still a sizeable chunk of ordinance that could still go bang if disturbed, don't know if it is true but there used to be tales of random flashes where some of the old phosphorus used to make it's way to the surface, we went round the wreck (On a port vessel and at safe distance) years ago and couldn't believe what was still listed as on board.

There were plans for an airport at "Cliffe" (in reality more to the west and covering Allhallows and parts of High Halstow) in 2002 (a big part of my political education as it happens - I lived nearby.) Thank goodness we had a good campaing and it never happened

The airport runways wouldn't have encroached on the railway line - Sharnal Street would be just to the south of where the blue line goes south - but the line would have been upgraded for airport services with a new branch. However the feasability study ( https://web.archive.org/web/2009080...ers/air/docs/lopmentofairportcapacity5669.pdf ) opined that " At best, CTRL is likely to be able to accommodate 4 airport trains per hour, which would need to be supplemented by other high quality rail services between London and a new airport."

A little history on the Hundred of Hoo branch line :)
What a superb bit of film - 3 different classes of loco, 4(?) different push-pull sets, a semi-fast train, and right at the beginning 2 sets sandwiching a loco. Shame it closed when I was 8... :(

No worries, It’s rather fascinating, I’m so grateful to these local historians preserving our heritage, even better now that the line will once again be in passenger use for future generations and also the generation that lost the line in the first place
