Buxton-Potters Bar ticket - valid via Doncaster?

I have an advanced single PBR-Buxton to go out via Euston & stockport.
Coming back I have one of the Virgin off-peak single (SVH) tickets, so am not restricted to a specific train for the return journey.
(actually starting from Letchworth Garden city but the first bit to PBR is covered by my season ticket)

We are walking on Monday so it may be easier to come back from Chinley station rather than Buxton. Just checking - can anyone confirm that this ticket is OK via Doncaster? (would alight at stevenage for train to LET)
The Eastcoast website offers journey options for a normal off-peak return via Sheffield & Doncaster & also other options by changing at Retford or via St Pancras.
the National rail website gives the same times in the initial search results but if I try to download one of the PDF customised timetables, it says that this is not a valid route!

what does the ticket say? any permitted?and how much did you pay for the ticket if it was an anytime single priced @ 56.50 from buxton to peterborough as im taking that's what you have, southern website gives options, via nottingham & and via doncaster, and down the east coast.!

it is off-peak single Buxton to Potters Bar route +any Permitted.

East coast website is quite happy to give journey options via sheffield then change again at one of the following combinations : doncaster& stevenage /retford &stevenage /st pancras.
Which is the quickest depends on the times as some connections are better than others.

from chinley you have a train every 2 hours toward sheffield.

so for example

1119 Chinley - Sheffield 1203
1211 Sheffield - Doncaster 1240
1255 Doncaster - Stevenage 1417
1439 Stevenage - Potters Bar 1459

on the southern website gives journeys of anywhere between 3hr 20mins to over 4hrs, via doncaster

It is likely to be either the 17:09 EMT or 17:43 TPE service from Chinley (the latter will take me through to doncaster) - out of interest how full will these 2trains be at Chinley considering it is peak hour (& I will be getting on with luggage) ?

i would expect them to be very busy. as they both leave manchester during peak hours, maybe if you can try and get a seat reservation?? for the 1743?

They're both booked as 2 carriage trains. The services booked for 4 car (between Liverpool and Nottingham) are:
0747 Liverpool to Norwich
0952 Liverpool to Norwich
1752 Liverpool to Norwich
1852 Liverpool to Nottingham
0634 Nottingham to Liverpool
1157 Norwich to Liverpool
1257 Norwich to Liverpool

Seat reservations are available.

Some late running services get turned around very quickly at Liverpool so I imagine when they happens they don't make the passengers wait until the seat reservation tickets have been put out.

Well I tried to reserve a seat at my FCC station tonight for the 17:09 Chinley to Sheffield next week. They couldn't do it as the system said that this train is fully booked!!! they offered the 17:43 TPE service but means different connections along the way home.
Will have a rethink.
Though I assume that there will be more people getting off at Chinley than getting on so should at least be able to get on the train even if there isn't a seat available. (though I know that assumption is a dngerous thing!)

Quite a few commuters will get off, I reckon you'll have a chance of getting a seat. If not at Chinley, then at Dore, which is 20 minutes from Chinley.

From my personal experience, I travelled on a peaktime Manchester - Sheffield working and had made a reservation but there was no card in place. Still "turfed" them out

But then when I travelled on an afternoon service from Nottingham, The Class 156 unit HAD got seat reservations!

You can't make someone leave their seat if there are no reservations. And if it was a class 156 that could have been a very long time ago! The last time I recall someone trying to turf me out was on Hull Trains, class 86 & Mk3s in place of a Meridian. I said there's no reservations and plenty of seats, and they reluctantly went elsewhere. I wouldn't be willing to move unless I was asked really nicely and alternative, decent seats were available, and as our group had acquired a table, that was that!

Only last Summer infact, I believe 156s appear from time to time whenever there is a few 158 shortages

I didn't really make them leave so to say, just said I have reserved these seats (on a full 158 ) showed them my cards and reluctantly they moved out of them

If you have to stand in such a case the TOC usually have to give you rail travel vouchers as compensation in line with their passenger's charter.

Yes, they may, or bump you up to FC if you seek the guard (not that you can do that on that poxy little local service run by EMT )
