This signal on the Windsor Fast leaving Waterloo has 5 feathers. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they all read to because as far as I can see there's only 5 routes - to DMS, DMF, WS, WF, WR - not the 6 this arrangement would suggest.

Equally interested if this is a past change has removed a route and which route that would have been.

Is it possible that the 'straight on' route (as far as feathers go) is deliberately not used so the signal must show a feather with a proceed aspect, to avoid confusion?

I had thought that, but seeing it this morning it looked like the route to the Windsor Fast had no feathers illuminated

Looks like there could be two different routes to the Windsor Slow via 15 mph West Crossings and via 30mph Crossover slightly further down at Carlisle Lane.

As this post says, sometimes there is more than one option to get to one route, perhaps with different speed restrictions. I don't know whether that's the case here, but it sounds like it might be

Yes does sound sensible but don't think it is the case here, at least not with the routes as described. I'm pretty sure the no feather route is to WF so only three left hand routes so not 2 to the WS, and also this morning I definitely observed position 1 is to the WS via the faster (and further right) 30 mph crossover so pretty sure that's not what's happening here. Happy to be corrected though

Signalling record society (1992):
From the table on page 3:

Pos 3 Down Main Slow
Pos 2 Down Main Fast
Pos 1 Down Windsor Slow via either 1578 & 1583 or 1584 points (two routes as mentioned by @louis97).
No feather Down Windsor Fast
Pos 4 Down Windsor Fast via 1586 & 1590 points - (ie crossing to Up Windsor and back again).
Pos 5 Windsor Reversible

Hopefully someone can explain why they’d ever need that route?

At an absolute guess, either to prevent a failure of 1584pts from knocking out both Down Windsor Routes, or in case a train got stacked at W61 and was preventing 1584pts from being released (W61 is only c.10ch from Carlisle Lane Jn so a 12-Car could well stand foul).

Sounds good. I didn’t really think of that sort of effect caused by other down trains...
