A "mask-free" hour for shops?

Should shops introduce an hour where people can shop without masks?

By covering our mouth and nose we were helping to reduce transmission of the virus.
You might be - assuming you have it yourself, of course. Though the jury is out. But unless you are as disciplined with your face coverings as I suggested you should be (and if you are you are probably one in a hundred or more) you run quite a risk of transmitting any virus infection there may be in Tesco's to yourself.

don’t want to undermine those who are less able to defend themselves against bullies and vigilantes. And I’m afraid that’s exactly what this policy appears to be encouraging.
That does seem to be what its encouraging to extent.
"West Midland Network" told someone to report non mask wearers, who may have a valid reason for not doing so to the police on the link below.

And someone called "Adam Reece" posting pictures of non mask wearers in the comments on this link below.
He said
but the ones I see everyday obviously do not qualify for exemption..
not sure how he knows that without asking as his other post on there states
didnt challenge them geez I called them morons as I got off if they was still on the bus ....
So looks like he didn't even bother to ask why.

Christ, that's going to get confusing in itself!
. Sorry, didn't phrase very clearly. My example of different rules on different days wasn't something I was advocating, it was something I was suggesting might be marginally less restrictive than just "here are your hours, like it or lump it"

Can you please describe how it is obviously the right thing to do? I've not seen a shred of evidence in any of the mask threads so far, and there have been plenty of posts in these!

There’s no need for any evidence. We know that’s the case because the government have told us so.

Anyone who asks for evidence, or questions anything the government tells us, is immediately dismissed as a conspiracy theorist. What a healthy basis on which to run a democracy. :)

You couldn’t make it up. There really are some people in this country who might be happier living in North Korea:D

It is suspected that Covid has a period during which it's infectious without symptoms.
I'm aware of that. However the post implies that they know that they already have it. As we're straying off topic shall we leave it at that?

Unless people have a valid medical reason for not wearing masks I really don't understand what the issue is.
Many people are exempt however there have been incidents of abuse and shaming by people who are keen to judge others.

Furthermore, some people feel anxious about their exemption.

As we see above, some companies are asking their customers to report people who may be covered by exemptions; how do you think those people will feel?
I personally hate the requirement but this suggestion is nonsense

Are you also going to suggest that for other laws you don't like? Should we have speeding hour? Park where you like hour? Smoking in the pub day?
Interesting analogies but they don't really work.

This is how people are being made to feel:

i was thrown out of a charity store yesterday after being shouted at/threatened with police AFTER i explained im exempt from wearing a mask. 4 staff bullied me so bad. is it legal to abuse a disabled person with autism? can they refuse to let me shop?

I have one of these cards as i can struggle wearing a mask due to sensory needs associated with my autism. Tho, seems that staff in a shop today still didn’t really believe me, rolled there eyes, stared at me + my friend round the shop & told me she “guessed it was okay”

I had to leave the shop yesterday as my son became so distressed

we were the only ones not wearing a mask. He is 23, and has autism. He used to love going shopping and is well known by all the staff. It broke my heart

I had to leave a shop yesterday. I got so paranoid about being in a shop without a mask. Everyone looking at me in disgust. Took me a few hours to calm myself afterwards. I've lost my independence at 31 years old because of this mandate! It's gutting. I hope your son is okay x

For anyone that doesn't know the lanyard Riley my autistic grandson is wearing round his neck means he has special needs. Some shops recognise it some dont. I took Riley in Wilkinson's today I had my mask but Riley is exempt from wearing due to having autism.
The security guard argued with me and wasnt going to allow me in. He was very rude and very unpleasant. I managed to speak to the manager she didnt have a clue what the lanyard meant, but apologised for the security guards behaviour.
I really think shops should be educated about special needs. It would make shopping trips a lot easier, shopping with a autistic child can be very difficult at the best of times without people like this making it worse

I feel angry at the way these people are being treated; if anyone thinks it's okay for people to be treated like that, I'm up for an argument.

But then I've worked with children with special needs; I've supported children who have been bullied, and I'll never forget the last time a boy who committed suicide said hello to me.

Some people just cannot see the bigger picture.

I’m a little hesitant to claim an exemption (I’m legally exempt due to my job for much of the tine and arguably have a reasonable excuse, for another reason, when I’m not at work), because I don’t want to undermine those who are less able to defend themselves against bullies and vigilantes. And I’m afraid that’s exactly what this policy appears to be encouraging.
You absolutely should claim your exemption, both for yourself and for those who are more vulnerable and less confident. The more normalised exempt people going about the lawful business is, the less difficult it will be for other exempt people to do the same.
I'm going to exempt myself at Tesco tomorrow. I wore my bandana for 2 20 minute train journeys this evening and it's given me an awful itchy dermatitis around my mouth and chin (I have to be careful shaving this area as otherwise I get hundreds of little septic spots, it's very sensitive as a legacy of being mis-prescribed steroid cream as a baby). I just know I won't be able to bear it for an hour and a half. And it keeps slipping soni end up retying/fiddling every few minutes.
Oddly enough I've not seen anyone in a supermarket wearing either a dust mask or a bandana. Just people doing the right thing, even if they accept that the positive effects maybe not be enough to stop the virus.
I've seen both regularly from week 1 of lockdown.

They’re uncomfortable, making shopping much less pleasant, and haven’t actually been proven to work. If I was given some evidence to show they work, then there would be no issue and I would happily comply for the time being, but until then I’m convinced this is a mix of political point scoring and trying to make people “feel safer”
Agree - got one and worn it but it was so stifling I’ve decided no more shopping in shops or going to places where required until rescinded.

Whilst mask wearing seemed 100%, it was a much emptier experience than the last few weeks. Very few staff wearing them -not surprised given the experience!

Given it is obvious this has nothing to do with transmission and is pure BS to assuage the panickers then this is just another sign of how ridiculous our response has become.

Sorry everyone but we decided a few days ago that we were going to cut down all the threads about face masks to just the one thread. Because the subject was taking over the whole of this section and much of it was going around and around in circles...
For all your face mask discussion needs - please lose yourself in this tailor made, comfortably fitting, ergonomically designed face mask, thread...
