Morning,
I'm on holiday next week to Great Yarmouth and upon checking the timetable for the Norwich to Great Yarmouth service that on Monday AND Friday only there are 4 additional non stop journeys between the two destinations.

I could sort of understand it if the journeys were all at peak times but they aren't so I was wondering if anyone knew what these extra journeys are intended for?

These have run for a year or two now (RTT is showing them as cancelled BTW)

Is there a significant amount of short-break holiday traffic at Gt Yarmouth? That could account for it - MFO seems an odd choice for ordinary day-trip traffic.

(Less plausibly, hordes of track-bashers wanting to go via Berney Arms...:) )

Ironically, The very reason I intend catching the 1136 from Norwich to Great Yarmouth is to go via Berney Arms (Wonder if I can ask the conductor for the train to stop even though I don't want to alight?)

You can certainly ask, but I’d like to be there to hear the answer ;)

Yes it is ‘long weekend‘ traffic, usually with enough suitcases for a fortnight.

I'm guessing that the odds are it would be a negative answer... lol

Most holiday parks and camps have Monday and Friday as changeover days. Could do with some extra on hull-scarborough line, or even get back to hourly service

I've heard it suggested that they stop at the moment anyway because the guard doesn't then have to go through and ask - COVID related.

Exactly. All request stops are now made reguardless as the drivers operate the doors & conductors do not pass through the train. In the case of Berney Arms it's always only the front set of doors that are released.

The four extra trains have run for many years now & cater as stated for the large short break brigade at the various holiday camps in the area. They tend to be busier from Yarmouth in the morning then from Norwich in the afternoon. They also on fair weather days take the pressure off the normal services in the opposite direction for day trippers.

Its great to see the extra provision being made to take account of the weekend holiday traffic, and also the eight Summer Saturday extras.
A lot more than other seaside resorts get for starters!

Maybe in future years we may see the return of through workings from Cambridge or Peterborough to remove the need to make connections at Norwich.

It looks like each "pair" of trips (am and pm) is worked by one set, which returns to depot in between. They have a decent turn around at Yarmouth, but its rather tight at Norwich in between each pair, with just four minutes to go out again. Granted one of the trips will be quieter than the other, but that's not too much time to load or everyone with all of their luggage.

2C50 0906 Norwich to Great Yarmouth 0935
2C51 0952 Great Yarmouth to Norwich 1021
2C52 1025 Norwich to Great Yarmouth 1054
2C53 1113 Great Yarmouth to Norwich 1145

2C54 1318 Norwich to Great Yarmouth 1347
2C55 1352 Great Yarmouth to Norwich 1421
2C56 1425 Norwich to Great Yarmouth 1454
2C57 1545 Great Yarmouth to Norwich 1614

They tend to arrive early and with everything being 3 or 4 cars now it's no problem. Infact it's not caused late starts in previous years when operated by a single 153 as well as 156/170s.
