They'd have been better sticking with the standard Scotrail livery - that doesn't show the dirt as much, and I suspect the HST livery will increasingly start to look worn unless they replace the vinyls on the power cars every couple of years.

Even when they are clean, it is very easy to see the border between the glossy blue paint and the matte blue of the vinyl on the powercars. It could have looked amazing if the 7 cities design was stencilled on the powercars rather than using a vinyl sticker.

Rather than replacing do what years of experience has proved to be durable - paint them completely.

About ~£3k per 43 for vinyl versus paint at +£10k. As it would likely be a repaint of the whole 43 since its already had vinyl on it, its probably more likely to be more expensive.

I wouldn't necessarily say the bodysides would require repainting after having vinyl on them - as long as the body was repainted before the application of the I7C vinyl and is in good condition underneath, then it should be relatively straight forward to re-vinyl them. A lot of stock has similar been treated this way over the years - FGW Turbo's had Network SouthEast underneath (after previously carrying Thames Vinyls) while the FGW 150s had Regional Railways underneath (after carrying Wessex Trains).

If I were in ScotRail and looking to re-do the power cars however, I would keep the bodysides white, then used a cut out blue vinyl for the landmark scene - It is currently several large pieces.

i never said they would need repainted before new vinyl would be laid. I said if they were going completely to paint from vinyl it would be expensive because it would require a full repaint.

Personally, the use of vinyl on trains for anything other than company names and small branding is moronic, unless you wrap the whole thing.

Using full body vinyls is moronic as well: water gets in between the vinyl joins, is trapped behind the vinyl and rots the body.

But eventually they do start peeling off at the seams and edges. TPE's 185s look very smart and they're kept well cleaned, but that's starting to happen.

Indeed; you can smooth it to the sides of the body using the most precise machines money can buy, but eventually regular wear and tear & exposure to Mother Nature means that it'll become unstuck.

Tbh, other than a propensity to becone noticeably dirty more quickly, that on its own is not unattractive but the "landmarks" do add a certain something to the overall scheme.

I think it would look good plain like that with a big INTER 7 CITY on the side.

The main issue is applying the graphics using transparent vinyl over the painted base colour, which means that the filth under the vinyl shows up very obviously. The spots on the standard ScotRail livery are applied in the same way and look horrendous close up but at least with a dark base colour the dirt isn't so obvious. Either a full vinyl wrap, or vinyl graphics trimmed to the edge of the artwork, would look so much better.

To be honest, yeah, it actually looks like a mask, adapting that awkward warning panel position appears to have paid off!

Did think it was an EMT power car at first glance though.

Yes, it's the 'chin mask' approach which in my observation many humans are also taking.

Can someone just confirm which power cars have the masks? I believe I've read that it's 'two' although I'm unsure if that's two sets worth, or just two power cars.

Either way, I've just seen 43181 and 021 on the 1T34 with the face masks. As long as you are in front of the power car, or on an opposite platform they do look okay.

Thought I'd post some pictures of the mask vinyled power cars. Admittedly my window could do with some cleaning, but I do feel they look alright from a distance, not so sure about up close, where as mentioned, they do look rather like the mask isn't really covering the 'nose', I guess they'd argue the lights represent a person's eyes.

Regarding deliveries I presume there is problem with refurb No 19 as it's not left Wabtec yet and the Power Cars for this set went south about weeks ago. The Power Cars for the next set, no 20 moved south about a week or so ago so this could move north before no 20? Anyone know anything? Thanks.

I read on another thread that 4 refurbished coaches were delivered to XC in the last week or so. Maybe work on them delayed the next ScotRail set. I was hoping to catch a set on the Sub while I was in Edinburgh last week!

Those are the last four spare TSs - everything else has been done.

A number of GWR carriages and four power cars have gone to Doncaster recently - seemingly for additional sets although I don't know whether that has been officially confirmed.

Even so, ScotRail should get priority over any additional GWR sets
