Hi sonic2009. I think you would enjoy learning to use the Routeing Guide.

To find out whether Ashchurch - Newbury via Westbury is a permitted route, you start by looking up the Routeing Point Identifier to find out the Routeing Points for Ashchurch and Newbury. This shows
Ashchurch - Barnt Green, Cheltenham Spa, Worcester Group
Newbury - Reading Group, Westbury Group
Next, you need to find out which of these Routeing Points are appropriate Routeing Points. This is done by comparing single fares. A Routeing Point is appropriate only if the fare to/from the Routeing Point is the same or lower than the fare for the throughout journey. Fares are:
Ashchurch - Newbury route Not London: SSS £18.50, SVS £22.00, SOS £54.00, FOS £83.00.
Barnt Green - Newbury route Oxford: SOS £38.00, FOS £90.00.
Barnt Green - Newbury route + London: SVS £57.50, SOS £91.50, FOS £147.50.
Cheltenham Spa - Newbury route Not London: SSS £18.50, SVS £22.00, SOS £54.00, FOS £83.00.
Worcester Stations - Newbury route Evesham/Stroud: SDS £33.30, FDS £57.70.
Worcester Stations - Newbury route Evesham: CDS £24.90, SDS £30.30, FDS £53.70.
This gives some surprising results.
  • Barnt Green is not an appropriate Routeing Point if going via London. If going via Oxford, it is an appropriate Routeing Point if travelling Standard but not if travelling First Class.
  • Cheltenham Spa is an appropriate Routeing Point.
  • Worcester is an appropriate Routeing Point if going via Evesham or Stroud.
Ashchurch - Newbury route Not London: SSS £18.50, SVS £22.00, SOS £54.00, FOS £83.00.
Ashchurch - Reading route Stroud: SSS £18.50, SVS £22.00, SOS £50.00, FOS £71.50.
Ashchurch - Reading route Not London: SSS £24.00, SVS £29.00, SOS £68.50, FOS £106.00.
Ashchurch - Westbury route Any Permitted: CDS £13.80, SDS £15.80.
More some surprising results!
  • Reading is an appropriate Routeing Point if going via Stroud, but perhaps not if avoiding Stroud on a route Not London ticket. I don't think the Routeing Guide can cope with these circumstances.
  • Westbury is an appropriate Routeing Point.
We now need to find the Permitted Routes for each combination of appropriate Routeing Points. These are
  • Barnt Green - Reading: LONDON and map combination BP+MW.
But Barnt Green is not an appropriate RP for route LONDON. BP+MW allows travel via Birmingham and Banbury. Due to the Fares Check, this is permitted with a Standard Class ticket only.
  • Barnt Green - Westbury: LONDON and map combinations BP+MW, BP+TV+WX and map CE. But Barnt Green is an appropriate RP only if avoiding London and going via Oxford. BP+MW allows travel via Birmingham, Banbury and Chippenham with a Standard Class ticket only.
  • Cheltenham Spa - Reading: maps BL, LW or WR. This allows travel via Stroud or Bristol, then Didcot.
  • Cheltenham Spa - Westbury: maps BL+MW or CE. This adds travel via Bristol and Bath, and going via Stroud and Chippenham.
  • Worcester - Reading: maps CS or WR. This allows travel via Evesham and Didcot.
  • Worcester - Westbury: maps CE or CS+MW. This adds an interesting route via Evesham, Didcot and Chippenham.
So the answer is yes. You have a wide choice of routes going through Westbury.
I was going to buy a off peak return with a y-p which i think is about 19.00? Does anyone know of any splits?
Split into smaller chunks, each with CDR fares. But you need to decide your route first.

If going via Oxford, it is an appropriate Routeing Point if travelling Standard but not if travelling First Class.
You don't use first class fares in the fares comparison any more.

• Standard Open Single (SOS)
• Standard Day Single (SDS)
• Saver Single (SVS)
• Cheap Day Single (CDS)

Yes. For London Group - Bristol Group, the maps are:
London Group Bristol Group LA LA+WX WC WR WR+WX
Map LA allows
Paddington - Hayes - Slough - Reading - Westbury - Chippenham - Bath - Bristol.

That's relatively straightforward. A map combination, such as LA+WX is more complex. The instructions require us to start from, say, London on one map, change to the other somewhere, then end in Bristol on that map.

First, look for the points where the two maps coincide. These are Clapham Junction, Reading, Westbury, Bath, Bristol, Newport, Cardiff and Bridgend. There will be other possible points - nothing in the guide says that the change from one map to the other must be at a routeing point - but let's keep it simple for the moment. We can eliminate Newport, Cardiff and Bridgend because they would need doubling back.

By my calulations, we can now find these permitted routes:
  • [LA] Paddington - Kensington O - Clapham Jn. [WX] Clapham Jn - Salisbury - Westbury - Bath - Bristol.
  • [WX] (Waterloo or Victoria) - Clapham Jn. [LA] Clapham Jn - - Kensington O - Slough - Reading - Westbury - Chippenham - Bath - Bristol.
  • [LA] Paddington - Slough - Reading. [WX] Reading - Staines - (Hounslow or Richmond) - Clapham Jn - Salisbury - Westbury - Bath - Bristol.
  • [WX] (Waterloo or Victoria) - Clapham Jn - (Hounslow or Richmond) - Staines - Reading. [LA] Reading - Westbury - Chippenham - Bath - Bristol.
  • [LA] Paddington - Slough - Reading - Westbury. [WX] Westbury - Bath - Bristol.
  • [WX] (Waterloo or Victoria) - Clapham Jn - Salisbury - Westbury. [LA] Westbury - Chippenham - Bath - Bristol.
  • [LA] Paddington - Slough - Reading - Westbury - Chippenham - Bath. [WX] Bath - Bristol.
  • [WX] (Waterloo or Victoria) - Clapham Jn - Salisbury - Westbury - Chippenham - Bath. [LA] Bath - Bristol.
There are rather a lot of permitted routes between London and Bristol!

Yes. A London - Bristol route Any Permitted ticket lets you use any of the permitted routes discovered by this process.

A cheaper ticket with a named place under the word Route on the ticket lets you use any of the permitted routes which pass through that place. So a London - Bristol route Warminster/Salisbury ticket lets you use any of the permitted routes which pass through Warminster or Salisbury. This is still quite a large number of routes. We saw in post #8 that one of these is Paddington - Kensington O - Clapham Jn - Salisbury - Westbury - Bath - Bristol.
does then the fare check thing apply?
No. The fares check is used to determine the appropriate routeing point for the journey.

If a station is not a RP, it is always associated with between 1 and 4 RPs. The fares check then tells you which RPs can be used for that particular journey.

For London - Bristol, both London Group and Bristol Group ar RPs, so we can move straight to the next stage in the process.
