I took a trip to Berwick-upon-Tweed today, and met a fellow border-crossing Scot while I was there. She's also of the opinion that Sturgeon's actions are madness. It's a great encouragement to meet others who aren't happy - I hope it'll pressure the SNP into a fairly prompt climbdown.

I just have noticed on bbc news mandatory face coverings in shops is now being considered in England.
Depressing news.

Includes a picture of BJ in a face-covering.

Supposedly 'following the science', which I assume now means 'obeying the baying mob'. Should they achieve this victory, the demands of the mob will not stop. Next they will hysterically scream for coverings to be worn 'in the vicinity of shops', then 'at all times between individual shops' then 'in all town centres at all times' then 'every time you leave your house, even to put the bins out'.

Hey ho, just placed an Amazon order for T-shirts so less need to visit a bricks and mortar shop. Will be delivered tomorrow, can be tried for size and returned free of charge within seven days. Who needs high streets?

For what it's worth once again as someone largely ambivalent on the matter but leaning towards would rather not wear a mask but does anyway, the people screaming and banging about entering a new era of enslavement of the masses appear to be a tiny minority on online social media whereas the majority in the real world just seem to be quietly getting on with life donning a mask where sensible. I've seen very few folk of a pro mask disposition getting very excitable or indeed, saying much at all. The "hysteria", if it exists, is very one sided.

Sturgeon's comments are certainly quite alarming. I hope she's preparing people for the worst, and will end it sooner than they expect, but it's grim that she's even considering the possibility of it being long-term.

Jason Leitch, on the other hand, when asked last week if face coverings on public transport were to be mandatory forever said "absolutely not".

FWIW I did a bit of hunting today and some sources said face coverings on public transport could be in place for around a year (relating to England, I'll add).

You can guarantee Sturgeon will leave it in place for longer, because Scotland.

There won't be any shops left to wear masks in before long.

She(and if Johnson follows SNP guidelines) need to issue an end aim.

Sadly I suspect masks being mandatory on rail is now a factor in loads barely climbing, if shops are also to suffer the same fate then show you have a plan to review this action and an end date for it.

Can anyone in Scotland give us a view on how busy the shops are, compared with the old normal and the past four months?

In England there was much media noise in the lead-up to the re-opening of non-essential shops, and now a deafening silence on how busy towns are, or aren't. I note today a report saying that, of the 40% of pubs which had re-opened (survey of main chains), their takings were about 50% of normal. So, overall, trade in the pub sector at 20% of normal. The pubs that had opened couldn't even attract their usual custom, never mind custom from outlets which remained closed.

Absolutely. More than likely BJ has been on social media. Like we have seen right through this, trailing rather than leading.

Should they achieve this victory, the demands of the mob will not stop.

Again, absolutely. Social media for my town does indeed suggest masks should be worn anywhere outdoors. Rather disturbingly, when the subject of those exempt for medical reasons is raised, the response from some is "I sympathise but they shouldn't leave their homes since they're such a danger to all the rest of us". A disgusting attitude IMO.

As others have said, time to buy shares in Amazon perhaps!

The worst aspect of this is it's terrible for cohesion, and not helped by the way BJ seems to either not notice or not care, just like there was no attempt to help places like Bournemouth which were artificially over-run with people thanks to BJ's policies. It really is only a matter of time before someone gets stabbed or such like over mask wearing.

The thing is, you could stomach wearing a face-covering whilst travelling to your destination if you were then free not to wear it until travelling home again. But to wear a mask throughout - from boarding a bus (or leaving home) to travelling home (getting home) again is a big ask for little gain. 66m people in the UK wearing face-coverings to stop how many cases?

Out of curiosity how many people were wearing scarfs or other improvised face coverings as opposed to actual masks.

I haven't had to use it yet, but I have a scarf I'll use when I have to. It feels much less clinical and threatening than a mask, but I still intend to avoid situations where it's compulsory as much as possible.

I have absolutely zero enthusiasm for public transport right now, and will stick to using my car as much as possible. I honestly never thought I'd say that.

Indeed. Why go shopping in obviously highly dangerous shops when you can get things delivered to your door.

Very disappointed that the BBC and other media have kept quiet about the of thousands of shopworkers going down with the virus due to dealing with hoards of non-masked customers for the last four months. As a result of this shameful censorship I, and others, now find we have been exposing ourselves to danger by supporting shops of all types when we should have stayed at home and added to Amazon profits.

This is my biggest problem. I got banned from Edinburgh Airport's Instagram, as they made masks compulsory before the Scottish Government did. I asked them why they were doing it, the legislation they were using, the proposed timescales and the criteria they'd use to measure effectiveness and decide when to remove the requirement.

I got blocked for asking.

How about everyone does as they're asked (unless they genuinely can't) and just wears one rather than looking for ways round it?

Yes, it's unpleasant, but it's doing your bit to contribute to the effort to reduce the virus without having to keep everything closed.

That is, sadly, far too sensible for some people.

Sorry but that sounds like the rest of the meaningless waffle the government have bombarded us with. You can't reduce a virus any more than you can control it. Sadly people suffering from coronaphobia believe all this rubbish.

But you can reduce its spread.

Which seems like a sensible - and kind - thing to do.

One winner there-- Amazon

I've got 2 face coverings (quite nicely decorated) from Oddballs. Amazon got nowt.

Same. But that doesn't mean I think it's wrong to require them - quite the opposite. I find it unpleasant so I find an alternative.

I will cover my face where I have to, because I'm not an obnoxious dick and I don't want to put shop staff - who don't want to wear masks either - in a difficult position. I won't, however, do it anywhere it isn't compulsory.

I'll choose to deal with this by shopping as infrequently as possible. And it's not "sensible" or "kind" because it achieves nothing, and is very unpopular.

But it achieves essentially nothing.

Its a sacrifice being demanded because the mob says so, not because it will actually contribute anything to anything.

Situation normal for me. I hate shopping and it is to be avoided unless necessary. Adding a mask doesn't really make me hate it much more, as I couldn't really hate it much more than I do!

I do normally enjoy travelling by public transport, and don't enjoy it with a mask. But that doesn't mean I think the requirement should be removed.

The new normal ...... asked a question you dont like ? ... ignore it, there will soon be an army of maskivists/locktivists along to support your stance.

Yeah, like the sacrifice they insisted I made that has lost me thousands in income that isn't covered by any government scheme, and the company I work for on a freelance basis is likely to go under.

You can imagine I'm really thrilled about that.

Down here in England I did my weekly shop for elderly neighbours today. Perhaps 10-20% wearing masks in the supermarket. No hassles, no upsets. People just getting on with it. Was thanked by one of the staff last week for helping to protect them by wearing a mask. That'll do me.

Do find the reaction by some that this is some form of enslavement and denial of basic rights somewhat over the top.
