The one here has already closed permanently with signage and decor removed from the site in the last few weeks. It was in a new development beneath a cinema with a Chiquito next door (also owned by the same company; The Restaurant Group, who have already closed down all their Chiquito venues.
Won't miss Chiquito. About 20 years ago I had a girlfriend who loved eating there. I thought it was awful, cheap grub poorly prepared and trashy atmosphere, with all the chavs running to the bar for cheap tequila whenever a bell rang (a feature they actually marketed as a "Stampede"). Haven't set foot in one of those places since we parted company and never intended to do so again.
With all these food businesses going under, presumably it will be a good time to start a new business once demand returns, which it will.
Yes indeed. I'm hoping for a renaissance in independent restaurants in the "mid market". Really the industry ate itself and was in bug trouble before COVID, a precession of indentikit chains, all over-expanded and all offering the same thing to a fixed number of punters.

I think there could be lots of new start ups in lots of different areas in the next couple of years possibly, bearing in mind that it could be a good time for someone with a little bit of money behind them to purchase cheap second hand equipment from bankrupted businesses and also there’s plenty of empty business premises that landlords will need to fill even if they’re not getting the same levels of rent as before.
There’s going to be a lot of losers from this situation but there’ll be some winners as well.

I wonder if in the longer term there will be moves by NR to reduce their rents.

Maccy D's at Leeds station, which one would presume to be one of the more resilient outlets still wasn't open when I went through on Saturday, so it's presumably not just SSP who are reluctant to open back up.
I wouldn’t think McDonald’s at Leeds station is run by SSP, I’m sure the franchisee isn’t them anyway. By last Saturday, only 200ish McDonald’s out of 2,000 ish had just reopened for walk-in/ takeaway. So still many in prominent places weren't open. I’m guessing it’s been so slow to reopen As a company as it has extremely high standards of cleanliness so wants to get it right.

They seem to be opening their drive throughs in preference to everything else. I see it more as an extension of their inclination towards technological gimmickry.

There are a few McDonalds open now for walk-in takeaway, but the ones I’ve seen are the ones with no drive through. The bad McDonalds at Kings + for instance, the one on my local high street too.

SSP do Burger King franchising, so I'm assuming they don't own that McDonalds (or any others). BK comes with cheaper staffing costs...

DT is easier to operate with social distancing and there are less regulations on TA-only businesses (they didn't even have to close during lockdown).

That said, I enjoyed a beanburger from a non-drive through Burger King on Friday and it was lovely !

Nice. I think the burgers are better at BK than McDonalds but all round McDonalds comes out on top.

Also, doing Drive Through and Take Away only is 20% more profitable as there is no VAT to pay that way and with the way the economy is at the moment, it all helps. I'm not sure it's good for the treasury though!

How come?

Because generally BK have less staff on shift. McDonalds apply fordism to food and have loads of people doing one small task in a production line, whereas in a BK a smaller number of people do a few tasks in their role. Both approaches have their merits and dismerits.

Aargh, don't make me think about VAT on a weekend !

Since I gave up meat (except fish), it's been noticable that BK has better veggie options. I still enjoy MD's Fillet o' Fish though.

Hm. We seem to have headed off down a BK/McDonald’s McRabbit hole...
Perhaps we should keep this thread on topic, but if anyone wants to start a thread to debate the above corporations that’s absolutely fine.

I think we need to keep this thread clear of that stuff for now if that’s ok because there’s going to be so much news coming in about failing businesses over next few months.

McThanks.

The names of businesses mentioned over the past few pages - Chiquitos, Bella Italia, Frankie and Bennies - are closing for the same reasons Prezzo is closing, and why Jamie Oliver's ventures closed. At some point, fashion and its fickle finger chose casual dining as the next big thing. And for years casual dining seemed to be unstoppable: social media loved the mega-burgers and trendy settings, employment was high and interest rates low, and people felt comfortable with spending money in restaurants often without the need to plan/book/organise etc.

Causal dining has been hit by wave after wave, long before COVID. The concept of the High Street, where so many are based, has been chipped away at for years. Local councils rarely have cheap rent, neither do shopping centre landlords. Casual dining became too pricey, too much of a trivial reason to spend money, and the fickle finger moved on, suggesting people order food online and get "meal packs" delivered to their door. Social media clicked its fingers and chose to become bored by casual dining's predictable aesthetic.

I think the last few posts have been quite correct, in that people will see a gap in the market (and plenty of empty units) once COVID and restrictions are out of the way. But we are into the era of "new normal". And pubs, clubs, restaurants, they will all have to suffer before things get better. But also, people who like to eat out want a treat to feel like a treat. Chiquitos is a good example of how to turn an experience into a cheap, tawdry party-trick. If someone wants to reinvent casual dining, then they need to think about the definition of "casual" very carefully.

Well it seems local F&B hasn't been one of the ones to be closed down permanently - in fact it was chosen as one of the 6 trial sites that reopened a couple of days ago

I don't think it has been mentioned yet that TM Lewin announced that they would be closing all of their stores and going online only.

We should also find out soon which branches of John Lewis won't be reopening.
