Does anyone know how many cars the 10:30 and 10:45 (Sardine) 'Shuttle' services are formed of please?

Our options are either to get a direct East Coast to Glasgow Central (which is actually where we want to go to!), but that's a bit early for some of us! or, 1 hour later, we can get the busier Aberdeen HST and change at Edinburgh for the inferior service to Queen St. We should make the 10:30 but delays are always possible so we could end up on the 10:45.

Anyone know if these trains are 3 or 6 car and would it be possible to take 4 bikes on them?

I'm thinking it may be a lot easier to just go direct on EC...

10:30 and 10:45 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street
Both will be single Class 170, maximum four bikes
By using both services up to eight could be carried
Also, reservations would be recommended

There is also the 10:56 Edinburgh - Glasgow Central (via Shotts) express
This should be a Class 158

Thanks. Don't suppose you have photos of the bike accommodation? I've done those things several times (only when a real train isn't due of course!) but never noticed what it was like for putting bikes on. Can you reserve all 4 places? Some TOCs only allow 2 reservations even though they can fit more.

They're showing up as not available for reservations on booking sites.

You think the Queen Street service is inferior? Personally, I think it's quite a nice trip. The scenery's not too shabby plus the tea ScotRail serve is nice (their coffee sucks though. East Coast is the exact opposite). Whenever I do Glasgow - Edinburgh and back, I like to make sure at least one of my journeys is on the Queen Street shuttle.

The Shotts route is by far my favourite. Very nice scenery.

I am going to Edinburgh on Wednesday and should arrive just before 10.30 so will try and look out for the formation of these two trains. Previously I've noticed most E&G services are 3-car units except at peak hours.

You think the Queen Street service is inferior?....

Yep I think it is.
- Inferior stock (not real trains!),
- Severe overcrowding at peak times,
- Higher ticket prices (though that doesn't affect us on AP),
- Vibrating underfloor droning diesel engines,
- station calls every 10 minutes,
- annoying barriers rather than on-train checks.
That's an outer suburban service! The InterCity route is only 10 minutes longer if you get a clear run, and goes to the station you actually want to get to in Glasgow!

Via Shotts would have been good if it was about half an hour earlier, thanks anyway.

Thanks, yes I reckon it'll be a 3-car.

It is a shame you will be too late for the 322 to Central, the old first class portion of the DTC coach is for bicycles, i think it takes 8. I agree though, EDB-GLQ really doesn't cut it as a 'flagship' service. With the exception of frequency of course. Queen St doesn't cut it as a 'flagship' station either. By miles.:D

So am I like the only person in the multiverse who prefers Queen Street to Central? >_>

I'm sure there will be another couple of folk who feel the same!:D To me, Queen st just doesn't have the feel of a particularly important station the way Central or Waverley does, even though it undoubtedly is.

Yorkie - unless i've missed it, i'm not sure if you want to go on a Mon - Fri or a Saturday?

If a Mon - Fri, back interrogation of the system shows that the 1056 EDB - GLC via Shotts has been a 156 every day (obviously Sun excepted!) this month. Also there is a 1026 EDB - GLC via Shotts which has been formed of a 158 (although this is a tight connection off 1S03, which is booked to arrive at 1020).

If a Saturday, the option seems on the face of it to be very slightly better. 1S03 is booked in at 1021, but the 1026 EDB - GLC has been a PAIR of 158s both the last two Saturdays (though I don't know if this is booked or if it has been specifically strengthened for some reason). Again, the 1056 EDB - GLC has been a 156 for both the last two Saturdays.

The 1030 and 1045 to QS have indeed been a 3-car every weekday and both Saturdays this month

I always thought that everything introduced on that line after the mk3 push/pull services were withdrawn was a backward step... it used to be my local line... and its sad to see once top-line expresses replaced by 'plastic' dmus...

What time are the 170s running as six car between Edinburgh and Glasgow? Is it just for a couple of hours am/pm at rush hour? Or do some stay six car all day?

Is it easier to keep them as six car all day (and pay higher costs) or to couple/ uncouple at termini (and then run light to Haymarket etc, taking up a path)

It may be better to send them to Haymarket where maintenence can be done in case the unit is on an Inverness run where it stables over night or something where it may not be able to get back to Haymarket for a few nights

The 170s run in pairs between 07:00 and 10:00, and 16:00 and 18:30
In the morning the sets arrive from Haymarket in pairs, the singles then swap for other duties (Inverness and Aberdeen)
On arrival in Edinburgh the first pair splits, the next arrival then goes to Haymarket, and the same repeats for the next two arrivals
In the afternoon the opposite happens, with two sets from Haymarket
In the evening the same splitting operation occurs

I've noticed that the 15:00 Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street doesn't appear to be 2x170's anymore, despite me frequently getting a 6-car set on it quite a few times last year.

I always noticed the 15:00 being 2x170's arriving ECS, presumably from Haymarket depot?

They are all pairs between 0700 and 0900 in the morning and 1600 and 1800 in the evening with some exceptions before the peak.

The exceptions that spring to mind that I know of are:
0945 Glasgow Queen Street - Edinburgh
1545 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street.
0600 & 0630 Glasgow Queen Street - Edinburgh

There are others of course

I can tell you for a fact that the following services are 3 car
0915 Glasgow Queen Street - Edinburgh
0915 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street (or was before may timetable change.)

These 2 are annoying as they are the first trains that off peak tickets can be used on making the exceptionally overcrowded as a result! In fact the 0915 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street often has more passengers on it then the preceeding 0900 as people wait for the off-peak tickets to be available.

The 1815 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street is also 3 cars, the 6 car unit that forms it splits at Edinburgh with the rear 3 coaches going to Bathgate. Fortunately to avoid severe overcrowding it is still classed as a peak service. The 1815 Glasgow - Edinburgh used to be 3 coaches but I haven't used it for a while so it may have been strengthen.

Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen St is non reservable in any part of the train, including bike areas. 2 bikes per space and it works on a first come first served basis and i there are a full quota of bikes before you arrive then its up to the Guard if you can get on and his/her word is final

This train stops at 18 stations and takes a booked 1hour and 33 minutes,do not get this one. The 1056 is a fast calling at HYM LVG WCL SHS AND BLH Only. far better

I can't comment on Central as I've never been there yet but I thought Queen Street was quite nice last year when I passed though there.
