Are we sacrificing the young generation without reasonable justification?

I do not know why this is being turned into a generational issue. Why are we fighting amongst ourselves? I thought that the battle is against a virus which can overwhelm the health system if left to spread unchecked.

What was being asked of everyone was very simple: stay put for a few weeks, and the virus would burn itself out because it would have nowhere to spread, as happened in Wuhan, China. You are not asked to carry a heavy backpack and wade ashore while dodging bullets from the enemy.
But some people are so important/special that they cannot wait a few weeks for a house party, to go to the beach, to go on demonstration, etc. They justify their actions because a few people who made the rules broke them themselves, that there is injustice on another continent, etc., egged on by an irresponsible media.

If you really want to get even, please take it up with these selfish people (which come in all age groups) instead.

Did they not say shortly after the outbreak, that now it's here, it could well become a seasonal illness ? we locked down not to protect the 'public' but the NHS who could have possibly been overwhelmed, although are they not every year, with Ambulances waiting to get patients into hospital sittting for 8 + hours outside !

Indeed, and this purpose was achieved, but they seem to keep shifting the goalposts, finding new ways to justify the lockdown “Protect the NHS”, “NHS has been protected, no deaths are too high”, “Deaths are low now? No R is still too close to 1”. I do wonder how long they’ll keep shifting the goalposts before they realise that we simply have to open up sometime within the next month or two to prevent economic collapse.

Was speaking to someone earlier who is worried about their two teenage sons. They don't want to leave their room and are not keen on going back to school - has the damage already been done? I'm sure they'll probably be fine when they do get back but this isn't normal behaviour

...but this isn't normal behaviour
No it most certainly isn't. And encouraging people to believe that the current situation is, with terms such as "the new normal" is doing nobody any favours because before too long they will believe it.

I believe (and fear) that the government disagree, and that they want us to want to adapt to life in the 'new normal' rather than the old normal.

The old normal was a product of hundreds, if not thousands of years of evolution and societal development. If Boris and Sturgeon think they can throw that away just for their own short term benefit then I am afraid they are most sorely mistaken. The psychological damage this is inflicting on the younger generation (who thrive on social contact, and I would argue it's almost necessary for them to survive and live well) is absolutely devastating, but Johnson and Sturgeon have and continue to, like many other things, simply overlook the impact of this in order to suppress the virus which admittedly even they seem to be far too scared of for what the risks really are.

Any government that presides over the worst epidemic in the country in a century will be destroyed by it.
This way they save their political hides.
