FTPE First Class Upgrade?

Hi all,

Is it possible for upgrade to First Class on TPE by paying a suppliment to the Conductor once you're on the train? If so, is this on any train or only certain ones? Also, how much is it?

I only ask as it sometimes gets busy on the MAN-SHF section, and disappearing into the FC area is very appealling

Yes you can, the cost of the upgrade depends on your ticket. Normally the diffence between the standard open and first returns.

For easy maths

You paid £5 for a saver return
the open return is £7.50
The first return is £12.50

You would need to upgrade you standard ticket @ £2.50
You would need to upgrade one leg of you ticket to first @ £2.50 so you would be excessed £5.

Some tickets such as Advanced can't be upgraded and different rules apply at weekends.

I am sure someone with the fares examples will give the the exact situation on this route. It is a route to be honest I would never by a first open return just I case I use an EMT service.

I take it then that TPE no longer have the flat fare upgrade they introduced at the start of the franchise ? The principle was the same as Weekend First but was available all week.

I would also add be careful when doing the flat fare upgrade on any route, it can be cheaper to do an excess ticket!

Upgrading to an excess is something that can be done anyday of the week on any train company that offers first class. If you know in advanced that you are definately going to do it then get it at the ticket office. Although between Sheffeild and Stockport the guard will have lots of time to sort you out.

I see. That sounds OK then. Would the excess charge be a fixed rate, or depend on the price of ticket? The ticket is actually an Anytime Single Manchester to Derby, changing at Sheffield, if that helps?

It depends on the price of the ticket, but you have given an interesting example and people with more experience will be able to give you the real prices. Interesting because I can't find a 1st class fare between Manchester and Derby even through it is possible to do the entire journey in 1st!

If you had a Manchester - Sheffeild ticket the cost would be £7.60 (assuming you had anytime tickets). If you had an off-peak ticket you would also need to excess to the anytime ticket in addition to the £7.60 excess.

Previous topics suggest that to excess only one way you must pay the difference between the Anytime First Single and Anytime Single - hence £7.60 for Manchester to Sheffield. (it is not half the difference between the return fares as suggested)

As there is no first class fare between Derby and Manchester, I have no idea if it will actually be possible or not.

First class on TP has nice seats, but it can be a bit rubbish. There is often no trolley service (depending on where and when you are travelling), and there can be a constant stream of people walking through to get to the toilet.
I usually wait until I am on the train to see if it's worth it. Sometimes standard is jammed full and there is only 1 or 2 people in first.
However, as it is very small (4 tables or so, I think), there can sometimes be no tables in first but plenty in standard.

Is this due to the length of the service or a part of the conditions set by the DfT? I remember hearing that they had to have a trolley the whole way through which is not the case with the cross-Pennine service.

TPE's literature suggests that, as they make a point of noting that all Edinburgh/Glasgow-Manchester Airport services have a trolley service for the entire duration. A friend tells me that 1st Class on these services is fantastic.

Probably would annoy those on the cross-Pennine services who only get a drink and biscuit for part of the journey. Seems quite silly that a journey such as Newcastle - York has no trolley, and is normally 1 hour +, when East Coast must make a fortune from their catering on that small part. Still, TPE do some very good value fares when booked through the so I can't complain.

maybe ask for an excess to a manchester to burton upon trent 1st anytime single priced @ £58..

so you orginal ticket cost £30. so an excess of £28pound will be payable.

If i am wrong guys please correct me.
