I think it will have to be via Liverpool, as Wigan and Preston will fail the fares-check rule.
I think you can go from Chester to Liverpool via Warrington (maps cl + ml) if you really wanted to.
(then direct to Southport)
Chester to New Lane would be permitted via Warrington and Wigan (shortest route) and also via Southport / Liverpool.

Take it back to the ticket office and ask them for an over-distance excess. They may even be able to just refund it and sell you a new one.

If you've already started, then it may be more difficult. I believe that you won't find a guard on Merseyrail that can do it so you will have to try at a station. The main ticket office at Lime St may be the best bet.

Well i do it @ moorfields. On the train just arrived at rock ferry. It will be easier for me to back via wigan. Because im going back to birmingham. Bought a birmingham to chester return. But i wont be covered from warrington to crewe. Unless i speak nicely with the guard.

For future reference, a BHM - Wrexham return (any permitted, routeing via Chester allowed) is cheaper than a BHM - Chester return.

Did you manage to get the excess?

I would have guessed that the staff at Moorfields would have just looked blank and tried to sell you a bottle of Tango or something....
