Permit to Travel Machines

Yeah, I collect Permits to Travel, whether I need them or not: I know they're quite rife in the SE, but the only places I've seen ones are Harwich Intl (still said Parkeston Quay on them!), and Haydons Rd, anyone know of any more randomly located ones...? Thanks

They've been removing them from stations in the Southeastern area. I was told too many people just put 10p in and took a chance that they wouldn't meet an inspector. The TVMs have all been upgraded to take credit cards and everything else, so the theory is that you shouldn't have any trouble buying the correct ticket for your journey.

Yeah... I reckon most people could make up when joining at unmanned stations that the TVM was broke, or try fare evasion. Only one I've ever used was the one in the SE was Farningham Rd, the member of staff turned it on for me just so I could buy one . Anyone ever gets the chance go to that station, the waiting room and building is full of old rail timetables, newspaper cuttings and photos. The statioin master is a top bloke too!

I don't actually require the PTTs I collect, I just get them as a 'souvenir' of the station.

I don't think any are left on the c2c network (the first place they were installed, I think): at some stations they are still in situ, but are now used for selling tickets for the station car parks.

Hatton and Lapworth still have working PERTIS machines (or at least they did when I visited a couple of weeks ago). Apart from that don't bother with other West Midlands stations. The one at Adderley Park doesn't work and despite them being at many staffed stations, they're never in use because the ticket offices are open from the first to the last train of the day.

EMT have been fitting new style ones, Attenborough and Duffield certainly have them, and there are probably more!

If you want something a bit different, the (council) car park at Lichfied City station uses what I can only imagine must be an ex-BR pertis machine to issue the car parking tickets. Same buttons, same displays etc, its even still orange/red.

British Rail bought car park ticket machines pretty much 'off the shelf' for both PTT and other simple ticket machines, so there are a lot of similarities.
TfL also did the same with its Central London roadside bus ticket machines.

I reckon most/all of the stations in the West Mids area have them, probably apart from those with ticket machines.

The ticket office at my local seems to be closing quite earlier lately, so if I'm making a trip into Birmingham in the evening I can usually get away without paying, such is the rareity of someone checking the tickets. Although I did have one guard tell me that I should still have got a ticket even though the ticket office was closed :roll:

Incidentally how much does it cost to run a permit to travel machine? Only EMT have installed one at Spondon a station that has aprox 9 trains a day to Derby and 8 to Nottingham. I'd be surprised if it protects revenue enough for merit its use!

Why would you worry about meeting an inspector if you had the PTT?

People were putting in the absolute minimum they could, in the hope they wouldnt get inspected and had paid 10pence to travel as opposed to meeting an inspector and acctually paying the proper fare.

ah ok, I thought you meant that they were afraid of being "caught doing something wrong" rather than "caught and asked to pay a fare"
