Of the current stock, I'd also say A stock ( although strictly speaking it's sub surface rather than tube ).

Of past stock, I rate the 1938 stock very highly.

And I'm just about old enough to remember, as a little boy, riding on red COP stock on the Wimbledon branch on family days out. Unfortunately I was too young to take numbers down then!

Im gunna be controversial and say the C stock. As much as everyone hates them, I'm not old enough to remember their pre-renovated look - but simply how rare they were on Sundays (when i usually travelled) on the circle line, made me like them quite a lot!
On the other had, I good memories travelling on the 1959 stock on the Northern Line

Ah this must be the easiest question ever!

For me, it's none other then the Met's A Stock for it's interior ie the mainline style seating

In fact, I do enjoy them so much I prefer to wait and let 2 or 3 H & C and Circle services pass though first when travelling to Moorgate from Kings Cross - yes I know I can use FCC but the A Stock exhales class.

Hmm, I've never really thought about tube stock much, but I have to say, I liked the old Northern Line stock with openable windows and lots of wood on the inside. Reminded me of some of the older Southern Region units (1959 stock I think). Does any of it still exist out of interest?

If so, then yes, they do exist, and one is in fact preserved by the LTM!

A60 Stock, Cravens just mastered the art of Train building with this design. Probably the most comfortable LUL Trains on the network.

I have to concur, with the 'A' stock. My son drives them, and much prefers them over the Jubilee and Northern lines stock.

That certainly looks comfortable, but I'm not sure that it was still going in the late nineties on the Northern line when I remember travelling on it. The seats were upholstered in a LU style blue/Green Moquette and the carriages had flourescent lighting if that helps.

There was a 1959 stock pair painted into red for their last couple of years on the Northern. Looked much better than the normal "tin can" unpainted livery on the type.

I think it is 1959 stock he is talking about, but I stand by my previous post that the 1938 stock was better.

Sadly I've yet to travel on the 1938 stock though doubtless I'd love it if I did

Also, since LU still owns a few Bournemouth line TC coaches these might possibly be in the running if I ever travelled on them - or would that be cheating

C Stock is spacious (not as big as the A Stock though) but in the summer there's bugger all ventilation and they become like ovens.

When the new trains start, with air conditioning, they're going to be amazing on the sub-surface lines. It doesn't matter what the seating configurations are like, how ugly the seating is or anything! They're going to be very popular indeed.

A stock for me, but anyone who says the A stock is the most comfortable train on the Underground is obviously equipped with a pillow to sit on. I think it's the most uncomfortable, especially as the suspension is terrible, the seats are not ergonomic and it has no armrests.

In terms of comfort, I think the 1996 stock is the winner.

thankyou. i actually had a ride on the met from kings cross to wembley park. i was wondering how fast they go as we were cruising past jubilee line trains with ease

They're "restricted" to 50mph - (as in, that's how fast they're suppose to go) - but regularly achieve 60-70+mph..

Although it's interesting to note that in a long distance race, the A stock obviously beats the 96TS, but as for acceleration, I know which I'd pick..!

I have to say it's the 1959/60 TS for me. Sadly I don't remember them much as when I lived in London as a kid I was on the Victoria Line.

The A Stock does have a charm that the wormy S Stock can't beat.

I have split my favourites into two

a) favourite Tube stock = 1959/62 Tube stock
b) Favourite surface stock = R38/49/59 stock (as in the silver train in my avatar aside- the red one is a train of CO/CP stock)

Undoubtedly these are the best there ever was in my view. I grew up in london with these trains and it is very sad to see that none have yet been preserved in working and running order. A ride on the preserved 38TS sort of brings back memories but It ain't quite the same noise a 59TS train makes.

My favorite LU stock would be the sub-surface A Stock, And D Stock.

Why I like them? Because I travel quite freqeuntly on many types of underground stock (96 Stock, 92 Stock, 72 Stock and many others...) and I prefer the seatings arrangments in the older stock (A stock) and they give a nice smooth ride, and also you get upto a fair speed in them too. The older stock also has more personality to it aswell, also talking as a passenger I also prefer the older A Stock & D stock. Brilliant units.

I'll split my favourite types into Tube and Sub-surface of the current rolling stock in service.

Tube: 73 stock. I think they have one of the best refurbishments of the entire LUL fleet.
SS: A Stock. Just for its age but the D stock is a close second as I travelled on these a lot as a kid.

The 67's had a nasty habit of missing the 180 code approaching Brixton, just as a Northbound was leaving the platform, I have lost count of how many times i had to intervene to stop the bloody things. :roll:

Driving a 67 in coded manual is awful; having to keep your right hand on the vigillance button.

Well, with the current hot weather it is unbearable to travel on many tube lines and buses (some are ventilated better than others, but none have AC as far as I can see) so, yes, I am a major AC fan - even if an unserviced system can spread germs and dry your skin out. Try boarding a (non-tube) train at King's Cross that is sitting at the platform having just been taken out of Hornsey depot, where it sat in the sun all day with the windows shut. Now open the windows and wonder why nothing is happening - at least until the train has been moving for 20-30 minutes (by which time, I'm getting off!).

And I'm aware of the extra energy needed to cool air, but believe it's a price worth paying. If it means a few extra offices are forced to turn all their computers and lights off at night to balance things out, so be it!

I just think we are becoming a nation of softies with all this aircon rubbish! I'm not being funny here but I grew up in an age where people smoked in already hot and stuffy deep level tube trains and no one batted an eyelid because that is what we put up with and I'm still alive, havent suffocated or fainted or come out in a rash because the air isn't clinically fresh to the point of sterilisation...I've not died from less than cool air on the tube... the tube is a transient place. Air conditioning is useless and costly on a tube train if the doors are openend and shut every 5 minutes or so anyway.. it lets hot air in and overworks the aircon to the point of failure!
