I have a First advanced from Manchester to Plymouth (via Birmingham), can I get into the Virgin lounge with this ticket?

I know the lounge isn't much, but a free tea would do nice if I'm early.

Nope. Virgin ticket holders only.

However, a First Class Single (Virgin Trains Only) to Stockport is only £2.65, so buy that if you think you'll eat/drink £2.65's worth in the lounge! :)

I attempted the above and was declined access last month...

I bought a VT Only Manchester-Stockport FOR PRIV for £1.35. **ticket type edited**... just checked Avantix and can't believe I've paid more than for an 2x FDS Any Permitted ticket!

They said it was for long distance customers only, and when I asked them, they stated it was specifically NOT because of the PRIV discount.

I contacted somebody within Virgin and they promptly issued me a £5 Travel Voucher and a letter of authority for future journeys :)

According to the Virgin website only Virgin Business, First open and First advance tickets gain you entry to the lounges. I assume therefore first day singles/returns (generally issued for shorter journeys) are not. I wasn't aware it was possible to buy an open ticket between Stockport and Manchester.

There isn't a 'First Open' ticket anymore anyway.

You could always buy an Anytime return from Stockport and spend the next month using the lounge!

I'm seeing:
Origin : MANCHESTER STNS
Destination : STOCKPORT

rte VIRGIN TRNSONLY
FOR 5.30
FDS 2.65

rte ANY PERMITTED
FDR 6.80
FDS 3.40

It seems to me that the FOR meets the advertised requirements for entry to the Virgin First Class Lounge.

I mean that, since simplification, there are no tickets actually called 'open' any more.
