Hi All,
Just stumbled across this shirt, i was wondering if anyone knew any background behind it? Seen similar ones and had red & grey stripes and was listed as an intercity drivers shirt. Anyone know what train crew member wore this?
Cheers!

Looks familiar! Guards' shirts were very similar except they had blue stripes. Supervisor's shirt, perhaps?

That brings back memories. My dad used to wear those shirts, he was one of the managers at Sheffield station Travel Centre.

From the 'general look', I would venture that it may have been a precursor to InterCity uniform. I have no evidence for this, just a hunch.

i was a driver on southern and definitely think we had red stripes thinking this would be around perhaps 1990 when the new uniform catalogue with the blousons jacket and and zip up waste coat warm insert would be XXX points shoes XXX points with something like trousers socks tie and basic jacket free and anything above comes off your available points that could be saved and used in if i remember correctly a biannual or so uniform issue ??

I was watching one of the older Video 125 DVD's the other day, the class 153 on the Swansea to Shrewsbury line was in Regional Railways livery, and both the driver and later the relief driver were wearing a shirt with blue stripes.

I too remember the points system you mention; its introduction was a very welcome change as rather than getting a standard issue every time, you could choose and order the uniform items you wanted & needed.
