Extending YP Railcard beyond age 26

Hi,
I am about to renew my 16-25 railcard and sadly, as I am now 25, this will be my last one.

I was just wondering if there is any way of getting a three year railcard at this point?

What advice could you give to stretch the 26-year-old age limit as far as possible? I was thinking of purchasing a new railcard (even though my previous one would not have expired) the day before my 26th.

I guess the only other alternative is the network railcard, but I think this does not give half the benefits a 16-25 card does.

Would love to have people's thoughts on this anyway....

You could always go into full time education and thus still be eligible...........

You can only buy a three-year railcard up until the day before your 24th birthday - so the best you can do at this point is to buy a one-year railcard the day before your 26th. That is it.

Yeah, I renewed mine a few days before my 24th, so will last up to a few days before my 27th birthday

Anyone wanting a railcard is likely to make regular train journeys but not neccesarily the same one each time, like a season ticket. Season ticket holders are effectively rewarded for loyalty, so why not reward the people who do a fortnightly journey between, for example, Leeds and London by offering a railcard for all ages?

I think the current system encourages a lot of people to switch to cars by the time they are 26 as by that time most can afford a car that doesn't break down every 5 minutes.

I'm not in the London area, but Oyster seems to have created an awful lot of confusion judging by threads on here!

The problem with Oyster is it's currently non-standard. Travelcards in London don't cause as much confusion as they are similar to what's offered in other areas and other countries.

I don't think that Arriva & XCs priorities, when a takeover by DB has only just been approved, are to introduce DB style ticketing to their franchises straight away.

The only time I traveled by ICE3 Duisburg to Amsterdam Centraal it broke down. I could not believe it. In true continental efficiency though, we were on another train within half an hour. Unfortuantely it was an ancient dutch sprinter train!

Yes I believe there should be a national railcard, I feel an off-peak railcard available to all at around £40 - £55 would work..

I'm of the opinion that £60 would be reasonable. However, allowing for things like First Class travel, peaks and the ALR, it might have to be nearer £100. Still affordable in practice though!

Perhaps two universal railcards, one cheapish (£60) that gives 1/3 off standard fares outside of peak travel and another one more expensive (£120) that gives 1/3 off 1st class and is valid in the peak and also gives money off ALRs.

Yorkie had the same idea for everyone to have some sort of railcard, as this would reduce ticketless travel.

They should! And there should be several different types allowing for different discounts. I like Ainsworth74's suggestion of one for first class and one for standard.

What about other types? Why should it be restricted to one year? How about a five year card? Say £200 for 25% off all off peak fares?

Let's think of some more radical ideas!

bahncards are valid on some, if not all, non DB rail services in Germany

It is quite legal to renew for YP card when you are 25 years 11 months and 29 days old so, in effect, getting to use the card untl very nearly your 27th birthday. The old one does not have to have expired for you to do this.

My daughter did just that.
