I’m beginning to wonder if this aspiration is being overtaken by events, namely two factors:
(1) increasing suggestion that herd immunity can’t be relied upon
(2) at present a feeling that people devoid of known pre-existing conditions aren’t quite as safe as was previously thought
The second of those *may* be debunked *if* testing shows more people than thought have already had it and survived, but we’re not near that point yet.
Perhaps I was getting the wrong end of the stick, however the feeling I have picked up from TV coverage over this week is that at present we seem to be limping towards a vaccine with not much else up the sleeve. Be that the case I think we will have to take a more pragmatic line than “you might just have to get it and suck it up”. The big problem is that someone can be asymptomstic, carry it, and then unknowingly transmit it to someone who is a much higher risk.
There’s no easy solutions as things stand at the minute.
Yes, but overall the rate of infections will be vastly reduced. There is only so much that can be done; at some point soon the rate is going to have to increase again. We're going to have to accept that; it's just a case of slowing it down a bit so that we have a bit more time to prepare, but it's going to continue spreading and you cannot eliminate all risks in life, only reduce them.
