Class 730/0s will replace the 323s in Birmingham X-City Line and 17 of the Class 323s will move to Northern where they will replace the Class 319s but I wondered what TOCs can the other 6 be cascaded to......

I'd just give them to Northern aswell so that they can eradicate any shortages and then run more services...

Or run more 6-car formations through the Castlefield corridor as part of the solution to the mess that it is.

It will be good as long as they are shorter than the 319s they replace so it’s better for the 323s to work in pairs so as to avoid the reduction of capacity.

I would also say that they could be put to pretty good use with Northern. The main disadvantage is a shortage of routes which could accommodate a 6-car train without selective door operation.
My personal feeling is that 331s should operate services requiring multiple working, so that their SDO can be taken advantage of. Then, the 323s should be put on solo-unit duties. This would presumably make the best use of Northern's current electric fleet.

Isn't there an issue of the 323 not being compatible with the signalling on the Bolton Line.

I seem to recall a well respected poster suggesting so.

Don’t think so as there is nothing unusual, about the signalling on the Bolton line.weren't they supposed to go onto the Blackpool Hazel Grove services whilst the 331s used on the Airport services?the route could do with 6 car services especially in the Peak times

The route does get 6 car services at peak times using the 331s.

Apart from Northern, I can't really think of anywhere else they could fit in. It would be a relatively small pool of units for an operator to take on.

Send them home to Leeds: where they can work 6-car services to Skipton and Ilkley that are actually worthwhile, unlike the utterly unsuitable 331s with their 2+2 and tables.
