I saw a fair few 142’s which had the new yellow doors on the original livery (025/026 in Chocolate and Cream and 050/065/066 in Provincial spring to mind as the last 5 units in the original livery).

Several 144’s also had the yellow doors applied to their original metro livery too. 011 springs immediately to mind but I know several more did. I know they had 2 piece from new but these were replaced with new doors and the updated control units. The conductor door control panel on the 144’s had a huge sprung cover flap from new, replaced with the current type common on all fleets after replacement. The main tell tale sign for this is they were also fitted with the circular emergency door release on the outside when done. Funnily enough 144017 initially had the original doors/panels still fitted after rebuild.

Newton Heath's 142027 was running in 1996 still in chocolate and cream with yellow new doors.
Were there problems with the original doors on 144s as they were replaced too?

From what I remember not massively problematic but it made more sense to standardise them with the 142’s.

Nice in the not so nice times

Yes I might be doing a bit of that on another unit :|o_O:'(

Yep, all 3 coaches. At least it’s not white and blue (sorry grey and blue ;)) no idea on the livery atm

Believe it was only the 141s, apart from 2 150/0s and a few 769s they have absolutely nothing else coming in - so the short forming and cancellations continue :s

It’d be interesting to see a railway refit bench seats into a 144

004 is going to be in GMPTE orange - at the moment can still not say who owns it

No that’s turquoise - I belive this is the green being talked about:

It will be, yes
Ref info I received on northern class
144 Sheffield services prior to March 6th. From various sources ie staff. Rail, User groups and pte groups at Sheffield. I was told that 144s would remain but in a reduced capacity fron may timetable to at least end July. Or even a little longer into August. So for summer services ie elsewhere to recieve the units needed for capacity ie coastal holiday resorts etc. Ie bridlington. Scarborough etc.
With 144 on Sheffield to huddersfield x1 diagram until stations upgrade works on that line completed. Ie Sheffield to huddersfield.
With 144 used on a few services
1. Sheffield to York
2. Sheffield to adwick via Doncaster
3 . Sheffield to gainsborough Central .
But not as reqular and only on a few 144 diagrammed services on those above mentioned routes. However unfortunately times have now changed. But in my opinion it would make sense for all 144 to have dispensation extended beyond August 2020. And to have all 144 in service at least to end dec 2020.
1. Enables service recovery fully to end off year at least.
2. Staff training will need to resume as and when practical to do so allowing new unit refreshes.
3. Depends iff virus contained August or not. Maybe if it is August will be a very busy month and this August due to holidays if safe to do so could see a high demand for travel and leisure travel. Higher than any other August. So ideal for strengthening and release 150 elsewhere. Ie use rail and Pacers to the advantage ie get people moving and Also get the tourist economy really going again. Promote rail travel to the full. Again depending on the current situation.
4. Airline industry's situation isn't ideal. So city to city travel will transfer in many ways for a time from air to rail in the uk. So again a case for more trains and more units and again keep some off these units for these much needed purposes.

Have Northern's remaining four 142s been laid up due, to the reduced timetable owing to the Corona Virus?

Not to sure. Although they were originally due to be replaced around mid April 2020 this year. From when 150001 and 150002 the ex great western units were due to arrive replace them from service. However would be nice iff they could still run say early may. If virus shows any signs off recovery.

I meant which units were built in each year eg:
142001 - 1985
142096 - 1987

I have looked at several old fleetbooks that I have from the 1980s and 1990s. I can only ascertain that 142001 - 50 were built in 1985 and 142051 - 96 between 1986 and 1987. It is difficult to know the exact year that many of the 142051 - 96 batch were built in.

I remember seeing 142051 brand new at Preston in October 1986 so presume most of the later batch will be 1987 built on that basis.

It is amazing how quickly time flies. I remember seeing a 142 for the first time whilst travelling on a first generation DMU to Southport in the summer of 1986. At Burscough bridge one passed on the bridge above the Southport line on it's was from Preston to Ormskirk. It was in the Provincial blue livery and I wondered what on earth it was!

If I may say it there's still hope that the Welsh 142 units could run a tour in Wales and maybe they might be leant to the north to run one

So, unless the remaining units are preserved, then a one way trip to the scrapyard is the most likely option

There won’t be any scrap moves for a while. Sims Metals’ Newport Docks site plus a few others are currently closed due to the ongoing situation
