future of Class 171s from GTR Southern

12 of the 171s (including the ex ScotRail 170/4s and possibly 170392) will move to EMR and turn into 170s from 2022 but was wondering what will southern order to replace them.
And on the other hand, if the whole 171s is gonna be replaced, I wondered if it will be a good idea to move the centre cars of 171s to XC so as to lengthen the 2-car 170/1s......

You’re writing as though this is done and dusted, but it really isn’t. If Southern cannot replace them with something suitable it won’t happen, and nothing has been confirmed yet.

The southern franchise will end in Oct 2021 and I wish we know what southern will order for replacement of 171s by then....

We don’t know, that’s why you cannot assume the EMR plans will even happen. However, there have been quite a few previous discussions about this whole matter already.
