The CFPS are pleased to announce that they will be running a railtour featuring 40145 from Rawtenstall to Cambridge on September 4th 2010. The train will pick up at Rawtenstall, Ramsbottom, Bury, Heywood, Stockport and Chesterfield.

Set down points will be Peterborough, Ely and Cambridge.

We are hoping to run an 'add on' tour from Cambridge to Stansted Airport (top and tailing with an as yet unspecified locomotive).

Booking forms are available on the CFPS website at http://www.cfps.co.uk/tours.htm , in the next edition of the Whistler and in ELR news due shortly.

I must admit, that's a bit of a tempter, especially as I can get to Stockport in time, and make it back home afterwards.

It mentions the skip top 'n' tailing on the mini tour. Presumably it's the back up loco and will only be leading the train on the mini-tour return.

I presume the route will be Heywood, Mills Hill, Miles Platting east curve, Ashton Moss, Denton, Stockport, Hazel Grove chord, Hope Valley, Dore south curve, Chesterfield, Trowell, Nottingham, Grantham and then ECML?

Not sure, there's some history at Stansted after a pair of 37s filled the canopy with exhaust fumes. I believe diesel locos were somewhat unwelcome after that. NR may be more tolerant of a 67, in which case it may mean the 67 leading into the airport station.

Either way it won't bother me because I won't be on the mini tour. I'd rather do a few pubs in Cambridge than pay £10 to be hauled by a skip!

The 67 should work from Bishops Stortford - Stanstead Airport (about 6 miles) & Castleton - ELR.

Ah, clever. Saves running the whistler round at Cambridge.

I suppose the all important question now is stock. The tour with the DTG last month used some lovely Mk IIs, but I decided not to go on the Aberystwyth jaunt last year because of the dreaded aircons. What will this tour be using?

Should be Mk 1s and 2s.

Well, I love 'em! You can't beat PV Mk IIs IMHO.

Yeah but they were rancid MKIIs!

Seats still left in both classes for this tour. The run to Stansted Airport is now confirmed, but it may not run all the way to the blocks.

Dear God, I hope it doesn't. We can spare one road in or out of the station but we can't afford to have a whole platform clogged up with a special.

The last time we lost a platform courtesy of AXC and one of their flakey Turbo's it was pandemonium with delays and disgruntled punters all over the place. The last thing we need on a Saturday is a train full of foamers who won't all get back on again (with respect).

Plenty of foamers at Stansted at the best of times, planefulls of punters going to/fro magamuff and the like. It's a horrid place.

If it was going to cause chaos why would NXEA have been so very accommodating and planned it into Stansted when NR rung up asking "we're presuming there is no chance of this whatsoever, but what do you think?"

All timings are rules compliant.

Because, as suggested, it probably won't run all the way up to the blocks.

The layout of the station area would permit full access to the station even if one of the approach lines is occupied. Therefore you may get through the pipe and into the airport precincts, but that doesn't mean you'll get as far as the station. You could just as easily be turned around at the last signal without impacting on the service at all.

Its been timed on the assumption it goes to the blocks and NX service trains flexed around it, the only reason it won't go to the blocks is if the fire alarm people are men of jelly.

I haven't booked on the mini-tour as I wanted to have a few drinks in Cambridge. However due to a change in arrangements this end I'm now going to have to drive to Rawtenstall, so drinks are out. Over 4 hours in Cambridge now loom without any beer, so I wonder if the nice people at the CFPS will let me book on the mini-tour at the cheaper price?

£20 if just doing Cambridge - Cambridge, £10 extra if doing the main tour.

I think what I might do instead is take an EMU up to Kings Lynn and back. It's only £8.50 day return and I haven't been there for years (hint, last time I went it was on a class 101 DMU).

Has anyone seen the confirmed route for this tour yet? Does it differ in any way from what I guessed at upthread? Will it be the same back as it was out?

ELR - Brewery Curve - Stockport - Dore Curve - Chesterfield - Nottingham - Grantham - Peterborough - Ely - Cambridge. Same in reverse on the return.
