Does anyone have some documentation regarding the validity of Rover tickets on the last night? (i.e. can you board after midnight, and stay onboard until the small hours?)

I am looking to take a sleeper to Fort William - and will have a Freedom of the North West Rover in the last day of validity. I will board at Preston after midnight.
I hope to buy a return from Lockerbie to Fort William on the way out, and get an over-distance excess for the return. (this will save about £15 - but I may not bother if it's too much hassle!).

Is such a rover valid on this sleeper?
I suggest you email FSR and ask, but I suspect the answer will be no

The ticket is valid 00:00 to 23:59 X days later
This gives you the advantage that you can board a sleeper the day after it has departed on the day the ticket commences
However you can only board a train that is timetabled to depart on or before 23:59 on the last day

On the final day you could board at Euston and stay on all the way to Fort William
Simply get a reservation or berth, there will then be no dispute
However, your ticket will only be inspected on boarding
If you are in the seats it may be inspected again after Edinburgh (effectively the next day)

Why not?

You can use your Rail Rover tickets on all train companies' services shown on the map except for Grand Central, Hull Trains and Wrexham & Shropshire Railway.
Preston, Carlisle and Lockerbie are all on the map, and it is valid on Scotrail.

The ticket is valid 00:00 to 23:59 X days later
If that's the case, that's fine - but I ask because most other tickets are valid to board until something like 02:30 the following day, then valid to continue the journey until it is finished.

Do you happen to have some link / quote for that, so I can confirm it?
(I could get to Crewe and board before midnight, if that really makes a difference!)
Thanks!

As above send an email to FSR just to confirm if they will accept the ticket from Preston
However I suspect they will not be able to answer the question and redirect you to NR

is this documented anywhere that I can look at?

I could buy a ticket from Crewe to Warrington, then board before midnight - but wouldn't 'start' using the Rover until it passed through Warrington - which must be after midnight, but I don't know when, and I would obviously already be on the train!

I probably won't bother now anyway, turns out there is just about nowhere to stay in Fort William on Saturday!

If you are using the Rover on the last day, then you can board at Crewe :
Mon - Fri 23:54
Sun 23:39 (12 September onwards)

However I doubt your ticket will be accepted as the first setting down point is Westerton
They may accept to excess you between Lockerbie and Fort William, but as the train does not stop there they can refuse to do so

As earlier, email them and check

Why not? The train does not need to stop at the place where he changes from one ticket to the next when combining a rover with a point-to-point ticket.

The only issue is what time the rover is valid until.

When I worked at First Group (albeit not directly at FSR) it was quite clear that only ALR, ScotRail, and Scotland rovers were valid on the sleepers
Even if a reservation had been made on another type of rover, the passenger would be advised that they would have to pay for a new ticket
I saw this happen twice at Crewe last year, on the second occasion the passengers stood on the platform for some time holding the door open debating it with the Train Manager, however they didn't get on either (the full fare cost probably put them off)

I dont know about other areas, but the FGW rover leaflet always used to specify that you had to stop travelling before midnight. Even if you had boarded a train already.

And, except on weekends, a rover ticket isnt normally valid on the next day until 9am.

The conditions of carriage disagree with that one!
If the validity of the ticket you are using expires during your journey ... you will still be allowed to complete that journey.

Yes, clearly FGW have got that one wrong
However, not many of their services start before 23:59 and finish their journey "the next day"

Which, if taken literally, mean that you could board the Fort William sleeper at Euston on the evening 15 June with an All Line Rover expiring that day, and stay on for the whole journey?

Maybe you could stretch it even further by going back to the conditions of carriage definition of a 'journey'...

i don't see why not? you can do that with any 'normal' ticket, and it is done on every outward portion or single.

You are permitted to complete your "journey" so long as you board and your ticket was valid when you did so
Therefore you can board at Euston and travel all the way to Fort William on the final day of an ALR
I considered using mine on the Euston to Glasgow
However, I didn't want to risk missing it and getting stranded in London

If you take it a step further...
Let's say you were travelling on a ALR and due to an earlier delay you missed the Euston to Fort William
You therefore travelled on the Euston to Glasgow
Providing you went to the Travel Centre at Euston and explained why you missed the original service, then the process would be explained to you on that to do
The outgoing TOC would be liable, lets say it was FGW as you had travelled from Penzance to Paddington
FGW would then have to make arrangements for you to complete your journey, and pay for the Glasgow to Fort William section (either by ticket or taxi)
Equally, they may ask you to go back to Paddington as you had missed the Fort William (ouch!)
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
It's generally accepted that the 'ticket day' ends at 0200
I've been checking this today
The time is actually 02:30 and only applies to destination tickets
I tried to apply it to several other ticket types and it doesn't work
