Meols Cop to Old Trafford (Metrolink)

I'm heading off to the cricket at Old Trafford tomorrow and will be making the above journey (one way), setting off before 0930.

A through ticket costs £12.70, but am I right in thinking that the following split is the best valid combination:-

Meols Cop - Appley Bridge (SDS) - £4.40
Appley Bridge - Metrolink Zone E (SDS) - £4.70(?)

East Coast quotes £12.70 is the single price and it's either £11.20 or £16.40 day return depending if the outward journey starts before or after 09:30.

If you hold any type of railcard then discounts aren't available on combined tickets or fares of £4-£5 before 10am.

Use 'Old Trafford Mtlk' as the 'from' or 'to'. It actually finishes up giving you the cost to Stretford (one stop south of Old Trafford) but on most journeys it's the same or no more 20p more if you're approaching from the Altrincham direction.

I'm not eligible for any railcards, so they aren't an issue.

I've read somewhere that from stations within the GMPTE area (Appley Bridge being the first one on this line) a ticket to a Metrolink station is issued based on what zone it's in. I know next to nothing about Metrolink ticketing though - hence the question.

It was (and maybe still is) common to split tickets for Southport/Manchester journeys at Appley Bridge. I've done this a number of times myself, but it's the extra Metrolink aspect that I'm not sure about!

you can shave a few pennies off with Southport to Thatto Heath (any permitted) at £4.15 SDS.

(I don't know anything about MetroLink either!)

Where do you propose to buy your Appley Bridge - Old Trafford ticket from? If it's from Southport station I imagine the staff may not be familar with zonal tickets for Manchester Metrolink.

Looks like it only works when the rail station you specify is outside of Greater Manchester. So I imagine the ticket must be for a zone if it's issued within Greater Manchester or a specific Metrolink stop if it's issued outside of Greater Manchester

Bolton-Manchester STNs shows no return tickets available on East Coast but Bolton-Manchester CTLZ shows return tickets so it looks like they need to make some tweaks to the booking engine for journeys wholly within Greater Manchester.

ok here goes..

get a anytime day single £4.15 from southport to kirby (merseyside) £4.15... valid on the 0907 from meols cop via wigan arr 0932.. maybe ask the guard on the train if you can purchase one. you need a tram and train saver, valid from wigan to deansgate and includes travel on the metrolink to old trafford.. £6.00.. unless anyone can find a cheaper way. because no fares are given from apperley bridge to old trafford mtlk on southern and east coast...

I was using that as an example of where things aren't how they should be in East Coast's booking engine.

Why not just buy the ticket from Appley Bridge on the train?
I would have thought if anyone knows how to issue one, it would be a train guard working in Manchester.

Just a thought are you travelling alone or with someone? If it's with someone you might be able to take advantage of a Duo being cheaper than two singles and do something like singles to Wigan, duo to Victoria and singles to Old Trafford.

Nice idea, but it looks like you can't get duo tickets from Wigan to Manchester, they would have to be from at least Parbold, and not valid before 09:30 - so not valid on the 09:07 from Meols Cop.

There is also an evening peak restriction on them, when leaving Manchester.

Yes, such ticketing does exist but the online sites may not be able to display it.

Metrolink
Through booking is available to all Metrolink zones (including Central Zone for all journeys).

There is a separate ticketing system for those journeys that both commence and terminate within the Greater Manchester ticketing area. This is the area defined in the GM map click here.

Tickets issued to Manchester from the above stations will be issued to MANCHTR CTL ZONE. These tickets allow the customer to travel free on Metrolink services in the Central area. (Bounded by Piccadilly, Victoria and G-Mex/Deansgate.)

Fares are as shown in your TIS. Season Tickets may only be issued for 1 week or 1 month. (No other period Season Tickets may be issued.)

It was (and maybe still is) common to split tickets for Southport/Manchester journeys at Appley Bridge.

I do this for Parbold to Wigan returns, feels pointless for such a short journey but it saves some pennies. The biggest money saver is trips to the airport - MIA to APB is £2.20 with a railcard, to Parbold the whole 4 mins and the next stop along the line it's £6.40.
