Someone I know purchased an off-peak return for a trip to the Airport online. If their flight is cancelled and they no longer require the ticket can they get a refund and if they can what process do they have to go through as I think you have to return your ticket to where it came from but it obviously wouldn't reach the seller by post before it could have been used.

What's the ticket type, price, and where did they get it from?

Yes, they can get a refund on a wholly unused Off-Peak return ticket. There is normally a £10 per ticket admin fee.

I have not attempted the get a refund on a ticket bought online through London Midland, but they use the same software as East Coast and I have successfully obtained a refund for an online purchase from them. In that case, you log into your account, seek out the details of previous purchases, and click on the refund button for the relevant purchase.

If this facility is not offered, it will probably have to be done by post. My understanding is that claims for refunds with unused tickets must be received by 28 days after the travel date on the ticket.

Yes - LM offer the process through their site if you booked online. Fill out the form online jobby, print it off, send it, they then ring you when they receive it to take account details etc. Pretty easy, but irritating bearing in mind the £10 fee!!
