What do you think about the new layout & train whereabouts marker.

Just had a quick look, can't see anything interesting about it! Does it actually have a layout like most CIS screens do but tells you where the train is live?

Any screenshots available? It's just at the moment doesn't impress me.

It will be especially useful next winter when we get snow and ice because the line past my garden is a 3rd rail one and when there is fresh ice on the conductor rail the arcing is really spectacular; with this new feature I can keep my study window closed until just before the trains are coming past!

Nope, doesn't work at all for me - utter ****! Rather stick to the FCC version thank you very much, it might be basic but it works!

The train whereabouts indicator feature is available on the over-priced NRE iPhone app. The indicator feature is only reliable where the infrastructure exists. For example I can see when a train leaves Blackpool North but until the train reaches Preston the indicator suggests the train is near Layton...for all of 25 minutes or so!

Huh, last time I was there I wanted to get away as soon as possible due to the number 1. reason being I had to keep to my tight timings, pure chance a HST for Paddington came in seconds after I arrived so obviously got it.

Might try to make some more time next time though,

I don't think you'd be allowed to show me though, would you? I don't work for the railway for a start, so to the top brass I'd be regarded as "general public" despite having more than a few senior connections within the industry!

Silly little pictogram's, maps of the trains position, etc all of which are totally unnecessary; All I want is accurate information, NO silly pictogram's, NO maps of where the train is, which to be quite honest is worthless, like I said all I want is just STRAIGHTFORWARD, PLAIN, SIMPLE ACCURATE INFORMATION which is easy to read.

It's quite obvious that quite a few people haven't heard of the expression "Keep it simple". :roll:

I can not see the link above on nat rails website, first thing today I checked a rail replacement bus (Chester to Warrington) even the buses have the marker now

For the life of me I just do not understand why it is deemed necessary to "dress up" something that should be kept clean, pure & simple by putting silly little diagrams/pictogram's, maps etc on it.

It makes things a lot more memory hungry, takes longer to load & does absolutely nothing except clutter up the screen & obscure what people have gone there for and that's simple up to date train running information.

And that's all I want and all I need, NO frills, NO silly flash graphics, just plain, pure simple up to date train running information.

You're absolutely right on this one, and the problem isn't confined to railway websites. I was looking at the website of a local restaurant a few weeks back - it started with lots of fancy graphics flying about, music in the background etc. When I finally got to the pdf menu, which was all I wanted to see, it had been done so badly it was very pixellated and hardly readable! All this fancy rubbish also makes it very expensive for anyone accessing via a mobile phone who has to pay for the amount of MB downloaded. Sadly, it seems a lot of companies prefer nice looking over practicality when it comes to websites.

Straight to the point is OK with me, your points are noted, but I agree some of the stuff especially putting dummy markers on rail replacement buses is a bit over the top,
however some reading difficulties may like this site,

The nat rail site is hopeless via mobiles, I always default to travel-line or transport direct on my phone. They really ought to have a low graphics version available, at least of the journey planner and live dep/arr.

I tend to use the PDA site - http://pda.ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/ - even on my PC. Perhaps overly basic, but does the job . Only thing it doesnt do is fares info like the full size journey planner does.
