Thanks. Perhaps it may be a good idea to identify the 24 142s which are only permitted to run coupled to PRM compliant units. See separate thread and link to dft documents. Sorry dont know how to link it.

The first bit is true and definitely doesn't mean all 142s will still be operational until May and all 144s until August but I don't think it is accurate to describe it as a drop dead date. If the dates aren't met there will be another extension, just as 31/12/19 was always described as a drop dead date but wasn't.

I'll add the permitted 24x class 142 units to my next update. Hopefully I can also add in extra details too as non forum users could well be using it as a reference guide.

Are the 24 units you mention the units that can operate provided that they are coupled to a PRM compliant unit? As some are currently in warm store.

What is the plan regarding 144012? I assume it will be leaving Northern with the other 144s. Wonder if it has any further use elsewhere? I was just thinking to myself whether it would be any use on a route like Cardiff Bay shuttles (for example), the old haunt of the class 121 unit some years back.

Strange that 012 is listed as just another pacer in the DFt derogation letter.

I guess perhaps Pacers are just so politically toxic that maybe they'll just throw 144012 out with the rest. Seems a shame considering the amount spent on converting it. Might as well get some use out of the set, even if it has to be placed on a quieter branch well out of the public limelight.

Yes the listed twenty-four 142s can run if scheduled to be coupled to a compliant unit. The 144s can run on specified routes only but can run solo.

At least the services in the North West are guaranteed to be 4-car! Mind you, if the compliant unit goes tech, it cannot be short-formed. Let's hope for good reliability of Sprinters.

Even with the modifications it's had, it wasn't possible to fully comply with the regulations. Even if it was being kept long-term it would need a few minor dispensations- though that's hardly unique, several newer units also needed dispensations for minor issues such as door buttons, PIS displays being a few mm too small, etc.

144012 would seem a good fit for Cardiff Bay, but as TfW are sorting 153s out there's no point in introducing a new unit type.

what's going on with 142050? there seems to be a bit of confusion whether or not this unit has been scrapped, considering 1 list has it down as scrapped and another has it down as in storage.

apparently it went for scrap by road however it was there the other day

You sure about that? The dispensation letter requires that a 142 only be used if 'scheduled' to be with a compliant unit. I'd say there's plenty of wiggle room there to say that if the compliant unit in a diagram goes wrong there's no reason the 142 cannot carry on alone... ;)

hmm this is odd, honestly i'd have it down as stored still personally seeing as there's little evidence that it's been scrapped.

I guess that if they say it's supposed to be scheduled to be run with a Sprinter and then claim that it "failed", they could get passed the dissension letter. Hmm, maybe I should run the franchise. <D
