I am thinking of going from Peterborough to Kyle of Lochalsh using a PBO-ED advance return and then using a Scotrail Club 55 ticket for the northern sectors and using the KX HST service arriving INV at 2008 hrs and missing the last INV-Kyle train.
Would my INV-Kyle ticket sector still be valid on the second train of the next day or would it only be valid on the first train from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh?
TIA

EDB-KYL will be on a SVR, so the journey has to be re-started by 1200 the following day.

With the current timetable, the answer is that yes, you could catch the second INV-KYL train because it departs at 1101.

It won't. It will be on a Club 55 Return which has different conditions to the Off Peak Return (Saver).

You cannot break your journey other than for connectional purposes.

'connectional purposes' is rather vague. In this instance, I imagine you want to leave the station to find a hotel for the night.

For the purposes of this Condition and Condition 11, you will be treated as breaking your
journey if you leave a Train Company’s or Rail Service Company’s stations after you start
your journey other than:
(i) to join a train at another station, or
(ii) to stay in overnight accommodation when you cannot reasonably
complete your journey within one day, or
(iii) to follow any instructions given by a member of a Train Company’s staff

It is then up to the rail staff to decide whether it was reasonable to complete your journey within one day.

I don't agree with this statement. What's your source for it, First class?

My view is:
  • The OP proposes to use the outward portion of a ScotRail Club 55 return ticket on the 1633 Edinburgh - Inverness 2008. This is valid because the afternoon restriction on this ticket is You cannot travel on services departing Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket between 1642 and 1809 inclusive.
  • There is no Inverness - Kyle service after 2008 on a weekday. The last train left at 1752. It is therefore necessary for the OP to stay overnight somewhere on the journey, and the OP chooses to do this in Inverness.
  • Break of journey for connectional purposes is specifically permitted by the terms and conditions of this ticket.
    ScotRail said:
    Can I break my journey?
You cannot break your journey other than for connectional purposes.
  • The rules for resuming a journey after a valid overnight break with the outward portion of an Edinburgh - Kyle ScotRail Club 55 return ticket are not specifically defined. The OP can therefore expect these rules to be not more onerous than those for resuming a journey after a valid overnight break on the last day of validity with the outward portion of any other valid Edinburgh - Kyle return ticket. These are:
National Fares Manual NFM 05 CD said:
Where a passenger wishes to stop overnight or the journey cannot be completed within one day, break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. Where a journey continues into the next day, travel must resume before 1200 and any relevant time restrictions apply (except where regarded as an unbroken continuation of the previous day's travel where the first connection of the day may be taken). No further break of journey is allowed except for the purpose of changing trains.
  • The OP may therefore choose to travel on the second day on any Inverness - Kyle train departing before 1200. There are two such trains, at 0900 and 1101.

I agree with John. I think in this case it is also useful to consider clause 19 of the conditions of carriage, which states:
"19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire
journey and one of the following applies:
(a) they are both Zonal Tickets (unless special conditions prohibit their use);
(b) the train you are in calls at a station where you change from one
ticket to another; or
(c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include
Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport
executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are not.
You must comply with any restriction shown on the tickets relating to travel in the trains of
a particular Train Company or Train Companies (see Condition 10).
If you do not comply with this Condition, you will be treated as having joined the train
without a ticket and the relevant parts of Condition 2 or 4 will apply, either to the entire
journey, or from the last station where the train stopped at which at least one of the
tickets was valid."

Now as Gus is travelling through from Peterborough on a seperate ticket, this now means that he is defined as making one through journey from Peterborough to Kyle. Now there is only one through journey from Peterborough to Kyle, which departs Peterborough at 08:46 on a weekday. As Gus wishes to travel on the 12:47 departure from Peterborough, a whole 4 hours after the journey which can be completed in one day, I think it is entirely reasonable that it is a journey which cannot reasonably be completed in the day, so the overnight stay for connectional purposes is appropriate.

Many thanks for the replys guys.
My intentions are to travel by HST to Inverness from PBO, stay overnight in INV and then have a day return trip to the Kyle, another overnight and return back to PBO.
I doubt if I will catch the 0755 HST back, it is a bit early and also it doesn't stop at PBO on the return anyway.

As I see it, if I book a Peterborough-Edinburgh advance return, out day 1 and back day 3 and the club 55 ticket to commence day 1 I should be OK as long as I depart INV for Kyle of Lochalsh before 1200 on day 2.

I could not really book a Peterborough-Berwick on Tweed advance as the HST does not stop there.

Please feel free to add any further info.
ps. First Great Western had Club 55 last year but they don't appear to be running the promotion this year.
