Use an app to alert the train to stop at your request stop, so you don't have to stand there and wave your arm!!

Like it!!Or do like the Swiss and install a button on the platform that lights up a sign to alert the driver of an approaching train to stop?

But surely we’d have to buy some light bulbs?Or do like the Swiss and install a button on the platform that lights up a sign to alert the driver of an approaching train to stop?

The same as your taxi app. Log in, finds your location (is on a station) tells you the next train coming, you click on STOP and the driver and/or guard knows to stop for you. How?
What would this "app" actually do?
Or,if you could get any sort of train to stop, forcing an intercity train like the Class 800 from Cardiff to London to stop at somewhere tiny like Pangbourne so you could get a fast ride into Reading would be amusing-especially the expression on the driver's faceThe same as your taxi app. Log in, finds your location (is on a station) tells you the next train coming, you click on STOP and the driver and/or guard knows to stop for you.
There are still plenty of places that don't have a mobile signal! The same as your taxi app. Log in, finds your location (is on a station) tells you the next train coming, you click on STOP and the driver and/or guard knows to stop for you.

Because the guard and driver has an app....How ?

What's the minimum now in a call box? Used to be 60p in 20's - that would last me a month on my mobile!!There are still plenty of people who don't have a mobile phone! (Myself included)

You are obviously unaware of cab protocols around use of mobile phones.Because the guard and driver has an app....
OK, you win.You are obviously unaware of cab protocols around use of mobile phones.
So they can be contacted then, they clearly have radios and other such equipment, even if not a mobile phone!Theres a radio system in the cab, so that the signaller can contact the driver when needed.
If a train was packed and approaching a request stop, and no-one can get to the guard to request a stop due to the overcrowding; would the train automatically stop on the assumption that there's a good chance someone will want to alight? The request stop system operates just fine as it is. Why over complicate it. An arm outstretched, or a torch waved on the ground at night as a couple of my passengers do is more than adequate.
OK, you win.
How would anyone from control contact the guard or driver, say in an emergency - let's say the signals are down further down the line are suddenly out of action and they both need to be made aware?
Yes but NOT whilst they are driving! So they can be contacted then, they clearly have radios and other such equipment, even if not a mobile phone!
They do have radio equipment in the cab. However, the signaller is not permitted to ring the driver when the train is in motion. It does have a facility for the driver to contact the signaller, once the signaller has sent the 'contact signaller' message. There are a number of rule book protocols that would need to be changed before the system is used like a normal text messaging system. So they can be contacted then, they clearly have radios and other such equipment, even if not a mobile phone!
